Payal is Shashi's and his first wife's biological daughter.
After Shashi's first wife died, he married Garima and never had any biological children with her.
A few years later, Garima's sister and brother in law die in a car crash, and Shashi and Garima adopt their daughter (Garima's niece) Khushi when Khushi is 8 years old.

I think when Garima and Shashi got married Khushi was already with Garima. But I'm not 100% sure, that wasn't clarified properly. But Buaji definitley confirmed that Garima is Shashi's second wife and that Payal's mother died and Garima bought her up along with Khushi.
