I an new to this forum and this is my first post 😊

Topic : 'Television serials nowadays melodramatic , orthodox and cliche-ridden'

I have a very neutral point of view in this topic, I don't stand in any end nor for neither against.
I think some foreign programs like The big bang theory, How I met your mother etc are really different and are not cliched, very light heartening and entertaining but whereas the Indian shows, I mean the daily soaps does not fall into this category, they are stereotyped and have monotonous plots which is really predictable and not beneficial. Shows like Uttaran,Rishta kya kehlata or the old shows like saas bhi kabhi thi, kasauti zindagi ki were extremely melodramatic and cliched.

P.S- by serials I mean fictions and not reality shows.

All these melodramatic shows are such a sucess because a large population of our country sees them and wants shows like that. Sometimes new shows do come with diffrent and good storyline but due to low TRPs they are shut off!
So its really up to the people what they want to see.

Hey, welcome to the forum!

Well, I agree! I do not like how in the hindi serials the characters are completely extreme. I mean if the saas is nice she will just flawless and perfect, if not she will be the darkest creature on the face of the earth. And oh my god all the drama! How much ever I try to avoid it, there are situations where everyone in my house is watching one lame hindi serial which quickly gives me a headache! 🤢
Obviously, there are certain unforgettable hindi shows like Sarabhai vs Sarabhai (which I think should be continued! It has a large fan following), Khichdi which obviously are an exception. I really think that we need more comedy and light hearted shows than the seriously weird and baseless serials which are plain torturing.
There are some awesome english tv serials thought! Big Bang Theory, HIMYM and Friends are some of the best shows ever! They are not only funny but also have a good storyline! I mean one can never get bored of BBT, it is awesome :D
But there are certain english shows I dislike as well, and they tend to have a huge fan following. I fail to understand why people like it so much O.o
Anyways, I hope that in the time to come the quality of the tv shows will increasing. It is really need in both english and hindi.

^^ I fully agree to you on this 👍🏼
Actually I forgot to mention about Sarabhai V/S Sarabhai and Khichdi , these are up to another level, these can't be compared to any other Indian shows, because as you know every show is categorized and has the same dull and boring plot.
and about the foreign shows, even I don't like some of the shows but they are high on TRP and popularity!
it even depends on the age group, I don't think our parents will be interested in watching BBT and neither we will watch daily soaps, mind it not all shows, some handful!
but Sheldon Cooper rocks!

I completely agree with you !

Indian dramas are just...! Man, don't they just take your breathe away ? 😆
I was actually discussing about Indian shows with some people a few days ago & they completely agree with me !

Anyway, I hate Indian shows ! I cannot stand them at all ! They give me big headaches !
I stopped watching them a few years ago, because it's the same old thing over & over again !
It's either about a rich guy falling for a middle class girl, they can't be together, they go through so much "pain", blah blah blah or "evil" people plotting & trying to take over their families wealth. I cannot stand the loud music in the background ! They play it all the time even when it isn't necessary ! Hair blowing when there is no wind, falling into each other's arms, staring into each other's eyes for an hour, the lame zooming effects & shot effects ! Basically, just about everything ! Their stories don't make any sense & they keep dragging it for years ! They always have some kind of truth to reveal, but they take forever to open their mouths ! Even if they do decide to tell the truth, someone comes in & interrupts them, then they say, "oh, it was nothing !" Pathetic !

Watching Korean dramas & Western dramas are so much better than Indian shows !
Seriously, no lie ! Indian dramas are filled with way too much family & love drama & they just never stop crying ! 🤣 They cry over the littlest things ever ! I can go on & on talking about how lame Indian dramas are, but I will never understand how some people find them interesting !

Anyway, these are all my opinions !

A mother-in-law character seems off if she doesn't have an evil cackle and slanted eyes. A good wife has to be tolerant, suffering, forgiving and kind. The hero should be dressed to the nines, filthy rich and sincere.

These are just some of the stereotypes of soaps of Indian Television. A large part of the population is more than happy with these sorts of programs. Most of the serials have a promising start and a completely fresh story line however ultimately they all follow the long trodden path and show cliches like amnesia, kidnapping, plastic surgery, bitchy relatives and all.

One of the main problem with such stories is that they are stretched like a piece of gum. Why not just end it after the story you had initially decided upon is finished? Why continue with the dragging? I have seen so many shows which were good at start but which go down the drain due to nonsense plot devices and dragging.

Of course the trend is slowly but surely changing and I am hopeful that one day we would get rid of these silly cliches.

Then there are shows like how I met your mother, Friends, Awkward The Big Bang Theory which have a few seasons and have more character consistency and humor. The best thing about them is that every episode starts afresh, you don't need to know what happened three months ago to understand what's going on today.

Korean Dramas are another good example of how such cliches can be avoided and the story remains fresh. Most of them have 16-24 episodes and are aired twice every week. This keeps the suspense going and prevents the show from dragging.

Welcome !! :)
TV serials.. I used to like How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men... but I find the two serials very depressing now :(
I see serials as a form of entertainment, I am neither for or against.. I choose not to take them seriously, when I get irritated with the typical stupidity portrayed etc, I change the channel :P
I am past the stupidity, the background saga, the CAMERA stills, the camera rotated, zooming in zooming out, camera going *shap zip zap shoommm* , the ultra sloower than a buffalo movements, the thundering entrances, the very predictable TWISTS, the rains... the list goes on :)
It's the viewer's fault such serials are still continued to be made.. if the TRPs fall down , the serial will cease to exist :) ..That being said, the serial producers need to catch up with time, get real... this is 21st century afterall :D
I miss shows like Dekh Bhai Dekh, Sarabhai VS Sarabhai 🥺
