Chapter 1
"Hey beautiful!" The moment those two words come out of my mouth I feel like grabbing the envelope opener off of my desk and stabbing myself. Bani just walked into my office and has this look of, what has to be, confusion on her face. It's not like I've never complemented Bani on how good she looks, but a) this is the office, b) I'm still giving my "girlfriend" that 'space' thing and c) only once have I said it with such. . Umph! Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't mean it, but in the delicate stage of our relationship, I am not sure she could handle it.
"I ah . . .well . . .uh." Duh, yep, good move Jai! Fluster your way out of this, Bani's already looking at me like she's about to grab my stapler and staple me to death.
"Uh, well what I meant . . .I didn't mean. I didn't mean for it to come out." I try a charming smile slash chuckle, but it really comes out like a snort. God help me.
Bani's eyebrow does that . . .that . . .well, it does that Bani eyebrow thing. You know? When she raises her left eyebrow up in question. It's cute; really it is, though, right now, I am not so sure if I should start thinking about Bani's cuteness. Well, yea, okay, I can think about Bani's cuteness because, I admit it, I am smitten.
"I kind of liked it." She says and my whirlwind of pointless thoughts stops abruptly. She liked it? Wow, we'll I'll be a monkey's uncle. "I liked it a lot." She adds with emphasis as her eyebrow comes down and this stunning smile takes place. I find myself catching my breath. Have I mentioned yet that I am smitten? Yep, that is I, Jai Smitten Walia.
Making a wondrous transition from my stumbling, bumbling, thinking to my cockier self, I offer her, what I know is a smile she can't resist. Well, I hope she can't resist because, to be honest, I am not too sure that smile does anything to Bani. Still, I have to give it a try, she can't be totally immune! "If you liked it so much, maybe I should use it more often?"
Is she going to jump into the challenge or back away like we usually do? The ball is and has been in her court. "Maybe you should . . .So what are you up to this weekend?" That question would have normally been out of left field, the type that would take you out of the game, but there is something in the timbre of her voice that's calling me like a moth to a flame.
"Mausi keh rahi thein ke weekend par farm house chalte hain, dekho kya hota hai. Tumhara kya plan hai?" I ask, trying to focus on the report I need to have ready for this afternoons' meeting.
"Kuch haas nahi, soch rahi thi ke Rano ko shopping ke liye le jaoon aur phir koi nai movie dekhoon. Kuch haas nahi kar rahi. Another boring weekend." She says trying to cheer up. But I know her better, I can read her mind like an encyclopedia and vice versa.
"Well, mein sooch raha tha ke, agar hum log farm house par jaate hain to tum aur Rano bhi chalna. I mean, Rano aur Sahil bhi saath time bita leen ge aur tumhe bhi company mil jaye gi." I invite her, still working on my laptop.
Bani holds this charming smile for a total of. . .of, well seconds, I guess, (She'd be able to tell you exactly how long) before those gorgeous brown eyes of hers settle down to the floor. Uh-oh. "Uh. . .I'm not too sure about that."
"Kyun kya huwa?" I ask her. She seems hesitant.
"Pata nahi Jai. I mean, the whole family is going and you need your privacy na."
"Bani, how can you say that? Tum janti ho ke you're also my family. Waise bhi, everyone would love to have you. Anu will love to have some company as well. Please, inkaar mat karna!" I plead with her and give her my best smile, which of course can make most women go weak on their knees but does nothing for Bani. Yes, she tells me that herself. She has often told me that no matter how many women die looking at me, it doesn't do anything for her. I mean, how can she say this and that too to my face? I'm Jai Walia yaar. Lakin kya kareen, meri best friend ko to koi faraq hi nahi parta.
"Theik hai…if you really insist" Yes! She agreed. Why am I getting so excited? It's not like we've never hung out before. She's usually always over my house or I'm at hers but still every time she agrees to come on our family trips, I get excited like a little kid. I've lost it, really!
She leaves my office and heads to hers, which is right next to mine. My office is in the middle, on my right is Bani's office and on the left is Aditya's office.
I watch her go into her office and get ready for the meeting.
**An Hour Later**
I walk into the conference room to find Bani, Aditya, Ranveer, Mr. Malhotra, and Ms. Signh staring right at me. I know, I'm late and I try to apologize for being late but I'm cut off rudely by non other than Bani.
"You're late exactly two minutes…and you tell us to be on time?"
"Sorry, mere printer ki ink hatam ho gayee thi…sorry guys…let's start the meeting" I said before Bani could say any further. She knows I'm lying about the whole ink thing, and I can sense her giving me her icy glares and I don't dare to look at her.
"Mr. Walia, at the last meeting we talked about our new hotels in New York and their progress. So far, we've met most of our deadlines and I've spoken to our supervisor in NY about your upcoming visit. Aaj meri baat hue thi un se aur uno ne kaha hai ke aap ke aane tak sare kaam hatam ho chuke hoon ge and we could inaugurate the hotels. I just need you to sign these papers so I can get some of the formalities done." Mr. Malhotra says handing the file over to me to sign.
"Mr. Malhotra, I will look through the files today and will send them to you by Monday." I said before turning my attention to Bani.
"Ms. Dixit, do you have your report?" I ask. We have a rule, in our meetings; we never call each other by our first names. This ridiculous rule was made by Bani.
"Yes. Mr. Malhotra, I sent you an email explaining everything that you need to know about the publicity of our new hotels. Ms. Singh, maine aap se last meeting mein kaha tha ke we need to have our billboards, brochures, business cards, etc… ready by this meeting. However, I haven't heard anything about that. We were supposed to keep in touch. What happened?" Bani asked. She was really professional when it came to work. She met her deadlines and expected others to do the same. She was the female version of Jai Walia except, a little nicer.
"Vo, actually, it must've slipped my mind. I have our business cards and billboards ready. I just need to work on the brochures." I hear a very nervous and scared Ms. Singh explain. I look at Bani and I can tell she is not happy about this.
"Ms. Singh, we can not afford for you to forget about these things. This is not a joke, this is serious business. Maine aap se pehle bhi kaha tha ke I don't like when people don't meet their deadlines. I NEED to have the brochures ready by Tuesday. How can we inaugurate our hotels without our brochures? And you need to keep in touch with me. Next time, make sure you don't forget." Bani says in a pissed off tone. She didn't expect people to forget about these things. Extra time meant extra money.
"Bani, please calm down" I hear Aditya say. Thank god he's the one who told her that. She would never say anything to him. Had it been me, she would've taken my head off.
"Aditya Uncle, please. You don't understand, we can't afford to miss our deadlines. We have other people to answer to."
"Bani, it's ok. Ms. Singh, please do as you are told and meet the deadlines. I do not want to hear another complaint. We need to get this hotels inaugurated and get going."
"Ji." Was all that was heard out of Ms. Singh.
The meeting goes on for another half hour Ranveer explaining his plan for the big day.
"Well, since we've discussed everything on the agenda, and it is getting late. We should end this meeting. Mr. Malhotra, Ms. Singh, thank you for coming and I hope to see you again soon." Jai said before ending the meeting.
Aditya, Ranveer, Mr. Malhotra and Ms. Singh walk out leaving Jai and Bani alone in the conference room.
Bani could feel Jai's eyes on her. She knew the bomb was going to explode any moment now.
