Reviews: Mera Saaein 2 – Ary Full Drama Review
Mera Saaein 2 had it all: the stars, the names, the hype, and the expectations. Sequels are the flavor of the season. Mera Saaein 2 that takes forward the saaein legacy came at a time when ARY was struggling in the ratings. So, does this dish serve? Read on to find out!
One of the best things about Mera Saaein 2 is that it takes the story forward. It starts from where the first season ended. This tells the story of Shazmaan (Fahad Mustafa), who is the son of Wajahat (Noman Ijaz), and all the shades of the saaein. This is basically a revenge story that revolves around old and new characters, as the story takes a 20+ year leap.
Shazmaan, who is a notch above his father, is despised by his mother and everyone else around him. His aim? To rule the world and take revenge from Shazmeen (Sunita Marshall), without giving a damn about anything else, including his mother and siblings.
Mera Saaein 2 is written by Parisa Siddiqui, who is A&B's creative head. Well, what does one say about the writer? Before I start with my rant, I must confess that almost every episode of Mera Saaein 2 has something new. Honestly, the serial rests on a thin plot and only counts on shock value.
Every episode has a major twist coaxed in the narrative, which you hardly see coming. Is it a good thing? Maybe, yes. But, there is an overdose. It honestly looks like a result of a discussion between few twelve years olds:
"Agli episode main kya karain?"
"Usko maar daitay hain, phir usko maar daingy, phir uski shaadi karwa daingy.."
" Us kay baad kya karain?"
"Aray, who abhi zinda hay na. Phir uss ko maar daingy. Audience hairaan ho jayegi!"
What? Do you take the audience for granted? The audience has matured in the last few years, and don't take to this crap.
Parisa Saddiqui tries her best to incorporate as many twists in the narrative as possible. Some look forced, while some really have the shock value. However, after a point you realize that the serial has nothing but twists after twists. It is like one of those Hollywood movies that have no soul. Yes, the serial has no soul! It destroys the legacy that was created by the prequel.
It is obvious from the ratings too. The serial suffers for the right reasons, as it fails to keep you glued. Being the content head of A&B's, I expected great things from Parisa. However, now, I hope, she polishes her skill before she unleashes such torture on us again.
Now moving on to other things. The editing is bland, and some scenes lack the perfection that Babar Javed is known for. Maybe, this has more to do with the fact that his assistant, Furqan, handled most of the work this time. The guy needs to polish his skills, as he fails to keep the tension. Some of the scenes are so long that you do nothing but yawn and change the channel.
As the director, Babar Javed does his job well. However, he isn't really given anything good to show his skills. The make-up and get ups are also bad. Aminah looks like someone coming straight out of a Bollywood version of a Scary Movie. The daughters and sons look older than their on-screen parents. Who made the casting call? Do we have a dearth of young actors? I don't think so!
Now, moving on to the acting. Honestly, that is the only good thing about the serial. Fahad Mustafa as the saaein rocks. The actor is excellent. He has the hatred in his eyes, the anger in his voice and the body language of a saaein. It is a bang on performance. Very believable!
Aminah Sheikh is totally wasted. This is one of her worst characters in recent times that aimlessly goes here there, and not to forget she looks like a laughing stock. You're a great actress Aminah, why didn't you act? Her dialogue delivery and body language are all bad. The expressions also go awry at times. Sunita Marshall looks good; however, she lacks the fire to play such a powerful role onscreen. She gets the best dialogues that she fails to deliver with aplomb. I appreciate the fact that we got to see the same faces; however, I sincerely believe that the impact would've been more had someone else played it. But, this doesn't go without saying that it is among Sunita's finest performances. But, the role just wasn't for her!
Mahnoor Baloch is not known for her acting, but this serial is aimed towards changing her. The actress gives the career-best performance. She gets a great role and she sinks her teeth into it. Incredible performance from her. It was long due! Shahood Alvi springs a surprise. The actor was born to play this role. What a powerful role he gets and how brilliantly he portrays it onscreen. Excellent performance by this extremely under-rated talent.
The serial has a huge star cast, and everyone from Anoushe to Rashid Farooqui acts well. However, there are a few blemishes here there and some actors don't really fit the role for one reason or another.
Overall, Mera Saaein 2 is good in bits and parts. Initially, the twists and turns work like anything. However, later you realize the serial has nothing but twists and turns. What a waste of scarce resources!
Ratings:(extra half star only for the acting!)
