SIlsila is the story of Amit Malhotra (played by Amitabh Bachchan), Shobha(Jaya Bachchan), and Chandni (Rekha)

Scriptwriter Amit and military pilot Shekhar are brothers and also very good friends. The latter is happily engaged to Shobha, while the former has just fallen in love with pretty, young Chandni. But tragedy strikes when Shekhar's plane is shot down in Kashmir. Amit feels it to be his obligation to leave the girl he loves and marry his brother's pregnant fiance instead. But when, by an unexpected turn, Amit and the now also married Chandni meet again, their love for each other proves to be stronger than their marital vows... They meet...this becomes closer and closer....ANd soo close that they break their faith to their respective spouse and husband...They decide to break their bonds and leave their legal mates...But obviously all is well that ends well...and Amit starts feeling guilty after he leaves Shobha and at last says...that they must go back and what they are doing is wrong...They return and Amit apologises to Shobha(he comes to know Shobha is carrying his child when he returns) and there ends the film...

Unlike most of Amitabh's films this is more of an ensemble piece and the whole cast delivers. Amitabh gives a powerhouse performance as the poet whose life is suddenly shattered and he's forced to give up his happiness for Jaya. Jaya is also perfect and matches him all the way. . Rekha is good though a comarison wont be recommended...coz it was Amitabh whose character demended the most.Shashi Kapoor does what he can in his small role.

The subject is well handled and well potrayed in perhaps the most mature way.And not to mention how conventionally it was done...the acting and all the work beihind and in front of the camera is really appreciable.

And u may obviously know the song "Rang barse bheege Chunar wali " from this movie😉
