Chapter 1: A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

"Di, you can't be serious."

"I'm serious. Completely serious. Stop acting like you're baffled. You were 16 when the decision was made, so you were fully aware of it."

"That was 12 years ago!"

"Well, Chotte, 12 years ago you had no problem with this engagement."

"Di, please. I don't even know what the girl is like."

"Khushi. Her name is Khushi. And what do you want to know?"

"I don't know. The only memory I have of her is that she was too happy." Arnav smirked at the pun.

"Believe it or not, Chotte, but people being happy is a good thing. Let me tell you about her then. Her name is Khushi Kumari Gupta, she's 23, she's a successful dentist in New York with her own Dental clinic-"

"-She's a dentist?"

"Yes. Her mom, Garima Gupta, is a doctor, her dad, Shashi Gupta, is a chemical engineer, and she has a sister, Payal, who is a cardiologist."

"Sounds like a good family'"

"Well'." Anjali hesitated. Telling her brother about going to America next week to visit them had been a tiring job, and in her process of getting everything she knows about the Guptas to Arnav, she didn't want to leave anything out.

"Chotte, I don't think you remember'"

"Remember what, Di?"

"Khushi isn't Shashi's and Garima's biological daughter. Do you remember?"

"Oh' Oh yeah! I remember'" Arnav had heard about her parents dying in a car accident, she being the only survivor.

"Well, it doesn't matter. She's a wonderful girl."

Arnav rolled his eyes. "Amazing, Di. And since you're so into educating me with the history of the Gupta Parivar and Khushi, why don't you type it up for me? A PDF file would work. Atleast, I can study it on the plane."

Anjali squealed with glee as she grabbed his arms. "On the plane?" The excitement in her voice was hard to hide.

Arnav sighed. "I'll meet her." And before his sister could break into another deafening scream, he stopped her. "I said meet. Not marry."

"We'll see about that after you meet her! I'll get Hari Prakash to send you her picture."

"No, Di, that's okay. A picture is really not going to convince me to marry a girl."

Anjali shook her head. "Whatever, Chotte." With that she left his room, screaming for Nani, and telling everyone about the exciting news. Arnav had agreed! Well to meet her that is.

Arnav sighed and sat onto the recliner in his room. He hated himself for never being able to say no to Di. How was he going to meet this girl and get engaged to her without knowing anything about her? He leaned back and closed his eyes as he tried to search through his muddled brain for some memory of this girl. They were there, but they were vague. She was happy, he remembered. She liked some kind of sweets, but he couldn't remember what kind. Finally, there was the one thing he remembered about her that wasn't vague at all. Her eyes.

Twelve years ago when Nani told Arnav that he was to be married to the girl with the mesmerizing eyes, he hadn't refused. Sure, he had thought, I could marry the girl with those eyes.

Arnav snapped out of it as he opened his eyes. What was he doing? He wasn't sixteen anymore. He a 28 year old, ruthless business man who had graduated from Oxford University, and he definitely had no time to think about the girl with the mesmerizing eyes, let alone marriage. He'd go see her. That was it. Then he would politely refuse because he didn't like what he saw.

With this decision, Arnav opened his laptop and got back to work.

---

"You have got to be kidding me."

"Khushi, don't be so dramatic." Her mom chided.

"But-"

"-No buts! They're coming here next week to meet you."

"Amma!" Khushi whined. She was not ready to be tied down. No way.

"He's a successful business man, dear. In fact, at such a young age, he has become one of India's best." Her dad added in an attempt to convince her.

Khushi merely grimaced.

"Khushi, stop acting like a baby. Anjali emailed you some pictures of Arnav. Look at them please? We're going to bed." With that her mom and dad walked to their room.

Angrily pulling out her iPhone, Khushi went to her email and deleted the new Email in her inbox from Anjali Raizada. No way. A picture wasn't going to convince her to marry some random man.

She shuddered as she thought of the business man from India who'll want to marry her. Khushi let her imagination run wild as she cooked up a mental picture. He'd have a thick Indian accent, she thought, complete with a pot belly and a head that had a receding hairline with a nice pile of greasy hair on top. And he'd have a uni-brow. Worst of all, he'd be fully equipped with a double chin.

Khushi nearly shrieked as she pictured the mental image she had come up with, which was of a Mukesh Ambani look-a-like. She regretted deleting that Email now. She knew she could google him for a picture, but she didn't want to put herself into any deeper mortification in case he was worse than what she had imagined.

"Hai Devi Maiya, help me." She whimpered as she settled into her bed.
