Could you relate to the character of Desdemona?

Yes I could! Desdemona stands by her love like a hard rock and I have the same quality in me.

What was your reaction when Vishal approached you with the script?

I had seen Maqbool and loved it immensely. So when Vishal approached me saying that he was remaking Othello I had decided that no matter what I was going to do this film. It was a perfect chance for me to exploit my talent. I instantly said a yes. I felt more confident once Vishal narrated the script to me.

Would you say that Omkara is your first dark and grim film?

In fact it is the other way round. Omkara has its lighter moments. In fact the first half is filled with light sequences that make the film extremely enjoyable. It is only after the interval that the film gets serious.

But the atmosphere on the sets told things otherwise. It is heard that Ajay Devgan played a prank on the unit…

That's true (laughs)! He had got these bhangwale laddoos and distributed them amongst the unit. Thank God I never had any because I keep a check on my diet. But my spotboy and my hairdresser had and so did Vishal Bharadwaj. By the end of it the whole unit was on a high. Shooting was cancelled that day (laughs).

What other films do you have on hand?

I am committed to Zoya's film. It's called Love Story. I am also doing Soham's next that is being produced by Karan Johar. These films will start only next year so I think its too early to talk about them.

Is it true that in Zoya's film your character is similar to that what Shah Rukh Khan played in Darr?

What rubbish! The only thing I can say that Zoya's film is a love story. My role is not what SRK did in Darr.

With you having signed a film with Karan's banner you two have patched up…

Yes! See I have no regrets about not doing films. Like I don't remorse over walking out of Kaho Na Pyar Hai and Kal Ho Na Ho. But yes I do regret losing out on friendship. I lost nine months on Karan's friendship and I think it was not worth it. I am glad I am doing his film now.

People say that you are devoted to Shahid?

Yes I am and I have no qualms admitting to it. I am an Indian girl at heart. I have my values right. I love him just like any normal girl would love her lover.

People also say that you want to settle down with him for good?

Marriage is not on the cards at the moment. I cannot even think of it. Shahid and I both want to focus on our careers. Also I want to continue to work for another eight to ten years. And thankfully I am getting some really interesting work at this stage of my career.

The general belief is that you were did not want to do Omkara
Yes, that's true! I had a lot of apprehensions when Vishal approached me with the film. Not that I did not want to work with Vishal. In fact after watching Maqbool I was eagerly looking forward to working with him. So when he contacted me for this film I said a yes immediately. But when he said that I would have to play Iago's wife Amelia, I had second thoughts because it was a small role and wondered if I should actually do it. I was apprehensive about doing it! It was only when Vishal narrated it to me that I was convinced about it. The dialogues that I speak in the film will leave an impact on the audience.

Does it prove to be difficult to portray a character from a book?
No! I did not have any such problems because Vishal was prepared more or less. The only trouble I faced when I had to speak the dialogues in the UP dialect. Vishal gave me a cd of dialogues so that I could grasp the dialect. And believe I would religiously listen to it everyday till the time I was shooting so as not to make any mistake when shooting. Also I feel I am more director's actress and do what he asks me to do. The better part of me comes then. But Vishal was so meticulous about the dialogue delivery that he even got me trained me where the tone of my voice was concerned.

The scene that turned out to be the most tough…
The one where I had to make gobar cakes. I hated it! I had to kneel down and make cow dung cakes and speak my dialogues. Believe me it was a big deal that I did that scene. At the end of the day I felt so proud that I actually kneaded the gobar and actually made the cakes

What other films do you have on hand?
I have just completed Vikram Mitra's Meridian. The film is about reincarnation. It has a very interesting plot and that's the reason why I said yes to it. But I personally don't believe in theory of reincarnation. It may be true but I have had no experience of it till now

There also Madhur Bhandarkar's The Signal…

Yes I play a prostitute in the film. That's another film that's shaped out to be interesting. I am glad to be working with Madhur again. As for my role, well watch it! I will not say anything about it.

Are you going steady with Ranvir Sheorey?
I don't wish to discuss my personal life in print.

What instigated you towards spiritualism?

Well there was nothing specific that drew me towards spiritualism. I mean nothing untoward happened in my life that jolted me and turned towards spiritualism. I guess I am surrounded by people who are deeply into it. My father and mother practise Reiki. My sister is a Yoga teacher. It is from her that I mastered the art of Yoga. It helped me a lot. It gave me peace of mind. I realized that that was something I was thirsting for for a long time.

You also traveled to the Himalayas…

Yes! It just happened. A friend… actually the person who asked me was not even a friend. I had just met him a few days back in Delhi through common friends. He just happened to ask me if I was interested in trekking in the Himalayas and I instantly said yes. And believe me trekking in the mountains was the most awakening experience I have had. Imagine staying in a tent and you look out and you have nothing but only the sky over you. The only company you have is of the bear who at times dares to come close to your tent. You defecate in the open. So who was Sonu Nigam there? Nobody! What was my identity there? That of just another common man! Even while trekking the mountains I realized that I was running out of breath. If climbing a small portion of the mountain this was my state so imagine how much more I have to work on my body.


Okay. Any plans to take up work in films?

You mean to say take up a job as an actor. As of now I have no intentions to sign films as an actor. Though I began with Kaash Aap Hamare Hote and my acting skills were praised in Love In Nepal I don't want to take up acting at all. I have realized that to make your mark as an actor you need to have a good story, a good director and a good producer who will to see that the film reaches the common man. He should be also able to market it well. I get film offers even today. In fact, a producer from a reputed banner just approached me with a script but I turned him down asking him to approach someone else. I want to focus on one thing and that is singing. I don't want to deviate from it.

Is that why you bought your own studio?

Well yes! But it is not one of those glamorous and spacious studios as you see in recording studios. I have just converted a modest flat into studio. I had bought this flat in Lokhandwala and I converted it into a studio. It is a well equipped studio with the latest technology. I have got my set of engineers and sound recordists. In fact, I have already begun recording my private album, the music for which has been scored by Deepak Pandit. Pandit is known for his classical music. He is very talented and mark my words he will soon become a music director to reckon with.

There were rumours that you were going to quit singing..

What? I think I have been misunderstood. I said I was going to quit wholesale singing. I would prefer to sing ten quality songs in a year rather that croon to ten thousand that do not make any sense at all. I would like that even if I am not there tomorrow the songs that I have sung are fondly heard and remembered.

Vikram Bhatt: Hrithik too choosy? After Aap Mujhe Achhe Lagne Lage, producer Rohit Kumar and director Vikram Bhatt have come together for another project. However, the new film will not star the original lead pair. "Hrithik is too busy, too choosy," clarifies Bhatt.
