What a delight today's episode was! 😃
The whole bathroom sequence was pervaded by one feeling for me and that was comfort. Yash, though aggravated, trapped and exposed did not feel vulnerable in this situation, because somewhere deep down he trusts Aarti with his honour, which is a fantastic role reversal as usually it is the woman who is caught in such vulnerable positions. Similarly, it was Yash who fell and Aarti who caught today, again reversing the usual roles. However, Aarti did not make Yash feel any less manly today thanks to the fact that she made the mistake of allowing the door to close. She gave her Yashji a chance to do his manly rant around the bathroom, sarcastically jibing her intelligence and imagining himself commanding the carpenter to the sight to fix the issue, because clearly it was a task for a man. I just loved KS' expressions as Aarti enjoyed her husband's rant, amused and dreamy by turns. Today she just listened, which is what I have wanted her to do for so long, and which is what created that aura of comfort for Yash.
Today he displayed both physical and emotional comfort in front of Aarti, not being weary of either being thoroughly exposed. When he came out of the bath tub, he was perfectly content to be in the towel, wrapped around his waist, leaning casually against the wall. The bathroom has always represented a more intimate space for the Yash-Aarti relationship, where Arpita's presence abides, as it always will in some capacity, but to a much lesser degree. How can we forget that it is the first place where Aarti made her presence felt by sticking her bindi on the mirror? Today also, it provided a space for things to grow naturally and fall into place between them, a place of sudden clarity where they could understand each other's intentions and feelings clearly in the light of what had happened.
Aarti drew Yash out of his shell, simply by being her unadulterated self, awkward shrieking, dreamy looks, tile counting and all. Suddenly Yash noticed that he was the one doing all the talking and his head strong wife was silent and he looks over to her gesturing wordlessly. I loved that they keep indicating this...he is drawn to her when she is indifferent to him. And what I loved even more was the throw back to the math scene! Aarti painstakingly counts each tile to come up with the wrong figure while Yash does some simple multiplication to arrive at the same. Yash likes to solve problems in one go, while Aarti likes to enjoy each step of the way. But while Yash may shoot to his goal, Aarti is the one that gains most fun out of the act of counting...similar, it seems to Arpita who counted even things that could not be counted, not to find out the answer but just enjoy the process of counting. Yash terms this as "pagalpan" and it becomes evident that Aarti possesses that same "pagalpan."
The similarity between Aarti and Arpita has been an ongoing theme in the show. Arpita's own mother was the first to point this out, saying that Aarti spoke her mind just like Arpita did. The next time was when the matron of the orphanage told Yash that Aarti was just as compassionate as Arpita. Today we find out that Arpita had the same love for the seemingly worthless details of life and living every moment with awareness, rather than just working towards some goal or the other. In this respect the two compliment Yash in a similar manner. All Arpita did, was to slow Yash down once in a while and help him appreciate the little things that no amount of money or tangible success can give, and poor Yash is so clueless that he calls this "pagalpan" and dreamily acknowledges that it gave him a good feeling. He has not understood the deeper meaning behind Arpita's whimsy and so could not recreate it for himself or his girls. Since Arpita's death, neither Yash nor the girls have had anyone to help them extract the joy from the simplest moments. Palak and Payal crave these moments with their father more than any fancy school he can put them in (for their long term success) or any gifts he can buy them...and it was these moments that Palak was asking for when she asked to go to Mumbai.
Finally, Aarti is able to convey that to Yash once she lets him begin the subject of Arpita and her memories, instead of foisting the topic on him from outside as she did yesterday. Today Yash for the first time had a complete and happy thought about Arpita that gave him no pain, and it was Aarti with whom he shared it because on some level he felt that she would respect it and not draw unnecessary conclusions. For the first time, remembering Arpita, though it meant acknowledging that she was gone, gave him peace and not turmoil and that is progress, major progress for Yash. And to me it was as though he himself was learning for the first time that it was possible that remembering Arpita could make him happy...and so when Aarti reintroduced her plea, on behalf of the kids, he finally saw how he could go to Mumbai.
And of course, as soon as the family came-a-knocking, Yash was back to his old, guarded self. He locked up his emotions and covered his naked form, ready to face them with his mask on. But what happened in the bathroom was indeed what Shobha later called it, chamatkaar, a miracle! And I loved that Yash said they were going to Mumbai in front of the whole family, as though honouring the request Aarti had made in front of the whole family. He finally took his first step as a real husband, giving Aarti her place by his side.
***I know, my take only talked about one scene today but I am too hung up on it to think of anything else! One thing I did love and have to mention though is the fact that Gayatri wanted to send Ansh along with Palak and Payal to their nani's house! How sweet is it that they have so fully accepted him and that they are not drawing any lines about whose child he is or the fact that he is not blood related to Arpita's folks? Now all three kids have three sets of grandparents, which just goes to show that if you open your heart to relationships of the heart, rather than focusing on those defined by blood or society, you only get more love!
