Part 53

54. The Past

Sometimes words cannot express the depth of feelings you have for someone, especially when you know that that someone loves you beyond conditions, she caressed his beloved face in the photo. How could she convey the magnitude of love she had for this person in those three little words she wondered... would it even express the tiniest bit of emotion that overpowered her whenever she thought about him? She looked up and saw him standing by the door. He was home early. Her heart ached with a need for expression. Then she was running across the span of the room to reach his open arms.

"I ...I..." she said, the lump in her throat making it impossible to speak.

"I know, Mishti ...I love you too..." he murmured as he stroked her hair. Sometimes even words were not necessary, she realized as she sniffed against his throat, her arms tight around his shoulders. Fresh tears sprouted at his understanding.

"Sh...sh... if you are going to cry for everything, what can I do? ...you know I can't bear to see tears in your eyes." He teased cupping her face in his palms and wiping her tears with his thumbs. He touched his lips to hers softly. He meant it to be just a brief touch of comfort, to make her stop crying. After what Geet had gone thru' since that night, he was careful to keep his caresses restrained, to reign in his desire so as not to pressurize her. He had decided that he would not persuade her until she was ready, he didn't wish to add to the insecurity she would feel if their attempt to lovemaking failed another time. No he wouldn't call it a failure because to him each time she welcomed his caress or initiated it was a step towards victory.

Even as her lips tingled she felt him drawing back. But she didn't want him to. She fingers threaded into his hair, holding on. She kissed him tentatively, following the way he had taught... brushing her lips on his repeatedly before touching them with the tip of her tongue. She wished her mute lips would proclaim her love... tell him how much he meant to her... How much she was indebted to him... how his love strengthened ad comforted her...how much she yearned to be the wife he deserved...she poured her soul into the kiss...

He reciprocated by kissing her back ... invading the sweetness of her mouth. He deepened the kiss with unhurried tenderness, understanding her need to give, taking the love she offered and giving it back with soft caresses and gentle touches. When he drew his head back for breath he enfolded her in his arms, savouring the feel of togetherness. Feeling cherished in the warm circle of his arms, listening to the strong heart that seemed to echo her own fast beats, she acknowledged with clarity what she had started to realise with his each touch and kiss ... The intimacy they shared was an expression of their love. It was something to be treasured. He accepted her with her flaws, understood her fears and anxieties, loved her without conditions ... Sharing her past with him would heal her completely for his love and support was the cure for all her pain...

She felt his kiss on her crown and the gentle movement of his hand up and down her back.

"Maan ..." her voice was soft.

"Umm?"

"I want to ..."

An angry howl from the crib broke into the harmony. Geet sighed knowing the time was not right.

"Lo your laadli is awake." Geet smiled.

Maan was about to say something , but Geet touched her fingers to his lips and whispered, " SHhh...Don't talk." She cast a quick glance towards the crib. "If she hears your voice she will create a ruckus and won't stop until her Papa carries her. Go and freshen up while I attend to her then you can play with her."

Maan nodded his head in agreement. His whispered, "Haan ji " tickled her fingers. He trailed a finger down her cheek before moving away.

There must be some truth in the saying that the baby latches on to her mother's emotional state. Shona had been restless for the past days, being cranky for no reason. But today once she was calm her daughter too seemed to be in better spirits... love flowed thru her smothering her with it's intensity. She cuddled her sleeping baby closer to her, kissing her touching her petal soft cheek with a finger. The dreamy smile that spread across those rosebud lips made her catch her breath. Albeit reluctance she went to the crib to lay Shona in it. With Shona settled for the night, she cast a furtive glance at Maan considering how she should broach the topic of her past and found his eyes on her.

"Geet..." Maan kept aside the magazine he was glancing thru' finding her lingering over Shona's crib, adjusting the pillows.

She turned back to look at him, questioning. He held out his hand, "come here."

When she came to stand in front of him, he pulled her into his lap. After the initial surprise, she cuddled against him, hugging him around the waist. He pressed his lips to her forehead and felt her sigh against his throat.

"Tell me."

And it flooded out of her...starting with her happy times when her Baba was alive, the vague memories of being carried around on a broad shoulder. Her baba, who used to sing lullabies for her, who listened to her tales from school with patience, who applauded with enthusiasm for each of her victory.

Maan gently soothed his hand down her back and hugged her close, letting her continue with minimum interruptions as she shared the sorrow of her baba's death, the confusion of being shifted to a new environment their ancestral home in Hoshiarpur where everything life turned upside down... her mother and she became a poor relation, where her status of a pampered daughter changed to that of a liability, another mouth to feed. She learned to be quiet, to keep out of the sight of the elders especially Brij as she grew older. Maan wondered why Rano decided to stay in the family where women were not respected or treated like human beings. The only liberty Geet was allowed was to continue her studies.

"Do you know Maan, you were my saviour even then?" she sniffled looking at him with tears shimmering in her eyes.

"How?" he asked though he knew about her being the scholarship student.

"The scholarship in Dadaji's name?... I studied with that." She paused, "it was the same kindness that helped me to escape after...after.." she drew in a shaky breath and shuddered.

She slid out of his lap to sit by his side. Maan let her with reluctance not wanting to restrict her in any way. She sat with her eyes closed, her posture stiff as if she was gathering the courage to tell what she had endured. Her anguish tore at him. He placed a hand on hers which was folded tightly.

"You don't have to..."Maan began. She shook her head in denial.

"I want to..." she opened her eyes to look at him and the pain in them made him feel helpless.

"I need to ... I don't want them to win... to hold me back" she opened her hand to hold his. "You have given me so much... Your support, your name your unconditional love...i have nothing to give back except myself... My past, my present, my future. My past...it frightens even to look back... but I have to do it to move forward, I understand that. You are my strength ... help me go back one more time...hold me safe in your presence while I say goodbye to those terrifying memories... I need to do this ... to have a future which you deserve."

Maan smoothened her hair back from her face in a tender gesture, his throat burning with the emotions that swarmed in him. "Let us go back then... know that I will keep you safe, no matter what."

With his free arm around her shoulder Maan listened with growing anger the betrayal that she had to endure from her uncle, her friends and the society. As she grew older there was a change in the way Brij watched her. Geet didn't particularly understand exactly what made her think so. May be it was the calculating way he looked at her or the fact that he seemed to be less angry towards her. Then he had bought her new clothes for going to mela remarking that she needed to look presentable to find a groom. She was scared to see him at the mela with a few of his cronies whose eyes on her made her feel uncomfortable. They had the same dirty look that Rajveer, Brij's friend had. Rajveer was Brij's drinking buddy who frequented their home with Brij. The day she had escaped Rajveer's assault she understood her home was no longer safe for her. Rano too supported her wish to leave HP once Geet completed 10th. They were sure Geet would be able to find a place in one of the good institutions in the city. As expected, Geet came first in her school. Brij was against their decision to shift and refused to support them economically. But that didn't worry them because of the scholarship. But despite Geet's wish not to let him know about her taking interview in the city, he suspected it and made a scene about it.

"The next day He brought a box of sweet and was apologetic. He told us that he was willing to consider my studying outside HP. Mama was relieved. She was feeling uneasy going against baba's family. I didn't have much because I gave part of my share to Tittu. He had mixed some drug in the sweets..." Geet's breathing quickened and her hold on his hand tightened. " He came back drunk with Rajveer. I woke up feeling someone carrying me... I struggled and screamed for help but I couldn't wake ma or chachi..."

She used the hold on his hand and the warmth of his presence to anchor her in the present while she plunged herself into the trauma of reliving that ghastly night. Words tumbled out of her, words that spoke of their atrocious acts...her panic... the pain she endured... her thoughts her feelings that she had never shared with anyone before.

Every single detail that was etched into her came alive... as if she was transported back in time to be an empathetic witness...she could smell the nauseating stench of liquor on their breath...the pain at the vicious grip of her Chacha's hand as he held down her thrashing limbs...

She took in gulps of breath, fighting the urge to scream out as she remembered the agony of being ripped apart ... still she continued talking wanting to get it over... Her voice turned to an aching whisper as she spoke of the betrayal so great that she wished for death...the horror of seeing her own uncle changing places with his friend. As she shuddered against him Maan felt his heart squeeze at the weight of her torment... he gathered her closer absorbing the shivers of her shuddering body. If he closed his eyes he could visualise the battered body of the beautiful girl...feel her agony and terror. He couldn't seem to utter a word in comfort... so he just held on to her, wishing he could find a means to stop the sobs that now racked her body yet knowing that he was powerless to do so. He lifted her hand to his lips...

The moist feel on her hand made her look up from the shelter of his arm and found her pain reflected in his eyes. She hadn't wanted to upset him so. She should not have broken down but once she started to talk it was so difficult to hold back. The wounded child in her had needed to share this with him... not just tell what had happened, but what she had experienced because it was much more than physical pain... The rape scarred her emotionally and psychologically... a betrayal so deep that she couldn't trust a man again until him... yet she hadn't wanted to cause him distress.

"I'm sorry," she touched his wet cheek, fresh tears sprouting.

He lifted her into his lap and tried to comfort her with soft touches, rubbing her back and smoothing her hair.

"Ahhh! Mishti how could you suffer so much and still be so sweet? I just wish I could turn back the time and change it all for you. But I have you now and I will never, never let a thorn prickle your skin. I promise you as long as I live I will let no harm touch you." He touched his lips to her forehead.

"I know." She said with such confidence as leaned onto him that he felt humbled.

But Geet's ordeal was not over with the rape. It took a great deal of will power and resilience to reach the stage she had. Managing to escape the clutches of her uncle who had sold her, she had sought the aid of law to punish her rapists. They had tried to defame her by bringing in allegations that she had led them on...that she had loose morals and had relations with her classmates. Keeping her focus on getting justice she had borne the humiliating questions in the court of law, the leering eyes of the villagers and the lewd tales spun around her. What hurt her most was the betrayal of her friends who turned away from her and refused to talk with her. When she left Hoshiapur she was determined not to let anyone know about her whereabouts and to sever all ties with the place.

He asked her about her life after leaving HP, about her studies, as much to distract her from the thoughts of HP as to know about her achievements and ambitions. Hearing her enthusiasm about academics he was determined that he would not let any misfortune stand between her and the fulfilment of her dreams.

Later in the silence that followed seeing her hiding a yawn behind her hand, he was filled with tenderness. He rocked her gently pressing her cheeks against his chest. The circle of his arms created a cradle of warmth and strength around her, his steady heartbeat as soothing as a lullaby.

He held on to her for a longer time even after he knew she had fallen asleep, going over all that she had told him. he silently thanked Babaji for gifting her with a strong will , for he realized how difficult it must have been for her to fight back. How easy it would have been to give up... he drew in a deep breath at the thought... imagining a world without his Mishti in it. His hand around her tightened and she mumbled something in her sleep, rubbing her cheek against him. He pressed a kiss on her forehead and carried her to their bed. After adjusting the pillows for her head until the time he laid down beside her he covered her with the blanket. He wished he could surround her with something soft and magical which could erase the memories of her past miseries. Sighing, he touched his lips to hers in silent salute.
