hahaha Nalan... the gossiper turned saint... aweee i feel like the poor kid is actually disappointed with himself, more than arnav. the fact that he bonded so well with him, made it worse... but i liked this update, it's funny, but then reality came crashing down right after the laughter...

Chapter 14 – You Owe Me

When she looked back, she saw that Raizada was still looking at the doorway where Nalan had disappeared. He seemed surprisingly dejected and she tilted her head and watched him carefully. She didn't realize that she had accidentally lifted her finger out of the water until the burning sensation struck suddenly and she shook her finger out with an "Ow!" before sticking it back in the now tepid water.

Her exclamation snapped him out of his reverie and he suddenly turned in her direction. But before he could speak, she said, "Listen, my finger is temporarily out of commission, so you would have to assist with the breakfast-making if you want to eat."

"What the hell!" he said in agitation, but she ignored it and said, "Think of it this way, you can now be sure that I am not poisoning your food. So what you do is get a cup of Rawa first…" she continued without pausing and by the time she reached instruction #3, he finally moved, much to her surprise.

She didn't stumble over her words or show her surprise in any other way, as she knew that would only give him grounds to think that this was something way below him.

"Roast the rawa in that skillet. Yes, that one. No, turn the fire on first. Jeez!" Things continued in that manner and even though he argued his way through almost every step and ultimately, she had to stop and say, "Have you ever even eaten Upma? Then how the hell are you arguing with me right now?" to which he had said, "I can argue with you as a person who has common sense and a good palate for edible food, not the crap that you make and try to pass off as sustenance!" A few more arguments like that and about twenty minutes later, he stood there stirring it. She tried not to laugh as she watched him; well, at least laugh in an obvious manner.

Once he covered the dish and looked at her with an eyebrow raised, she asked, "You know, for a corporate leech, you are surprisingly obedient."

He gave her an exasperated look before his expression changed into a smirk and he said, "You know, for a complete man-hater, you did not have too many objections to me kissing or biting your navel."

It was fortunate that he had placed a cover over the skillet where breakfast was cooking because in the next moment, she had thrown the bowl of water that she had been using to cool her finger at his face.

There was only a moment's pause when he sputtered in shock and spit out water, before he was on her pushing her back against the wall behind her. For a moment she thought he would hit her, but then he punched the wall to her right and she flinched at the force of it.

She didn't realize that she was breathing hard until a moment later when he looked into her eyes and she saw the rage there. Then she could really feel her heart pounding, hard and fast.

They stared at each other like that for several moments before she finally said, "It's ready."

He exhaled deeply and closed his eyes for a moment before pulling back from her and walking to the stove to turn off the heat.

She stood quietly as she saw him lift the lid and shake off the water that had splashed on the outside when she had thrown the water at him. She walked to get a rag and put it down and moved it around with her foot to absorb all the water that was now on the floor.

When she turned, she saw him grab a spoon to taste the Upma that was all done.

He didn't show a reaction one way or the other, so she grabbed another spoon for a taste herself.

She had expected it to be the same barely edible mess she always made and thus was surprised when it was… not so… she paused in confusion and looked at him for a moment before dipping into the skillet once more for another spoonful.

"That is crazy. I gave you the directions to make this. Then how does this taste different from mine?"

He shrugged and said, "Maybe the kitchen doesn't hate me as much as it hates you."

She rolled her eyes as she took another spoonful. This time he stopped her just as she brought it up, diverting it to his mouth instead.

"I made it, so I get to eat it, not you."

She was surprised enough that she didn't resist, but as she watched him chew, she made a face and said, "I ate off that spoon, you unhygienic jerk!"

"I already kissed you; sharing a spoon is not going to do any more damage."

She turned away from him so that she wouldn't slap him for his constant references to every liberty he had deigned to take on her person since his arrival and muttered, "You're a lowlife for bringing such things up all the time!"

"Color me surprised, Ms. Govindan. For someone as feisty as you, you have had no discernible reaction to me touching you. Like I said before…"

"Do you want me to throw something at you again?" she asked, turning in his direction and cutting him off.

He raised an eyebrow daring her to try again, and she raised her own, daring him to continue daring her.

Their staring-daring war would have continued had it not been for the fact that she heard noises outside the kitchen.

She rushed out and saw that her father was coming down the stairs.

"Innu njan vaikiyallo kutti. Bakshanam vallom sariyayo?" ("Today I am late, girl. Is there any breakfast ready?)

"Achanirikku. Ippam konduvaram" (You sit down, Father. I will bring it right out).

She walked back into the kitchen and said when she saw Raizada still standing by the stove. "He can't know that you made it. He will not want guests entering the kitchen to help with cooking, especially unwanted guests like you."

"I didn't make it for him; I made it for myself."

"With our ingredients and my instructions! So it technically belongs to us." She said as she started plating the food.

"Then I can always tell your father that I made it." He said, starting to walk out.

"No!" she pulled him back by his hand and he turned back and looked down to where she was holding onto him before looking back up at her, lifting that damn supercilious eyebrow of his again.

"Tell me you owe me." He said after a moment.

She let go off his hand and he shrugged as he started walking again towards the kitchen's exit.

She waited until he was just by the door before she called, "Raizada."

He looked back at her.

She was holding the plate of breakfast for her father in one hand and she grabbed a glass of water in another as she walked towards him.

"You owe us more than we could ever owe you, you bas***d." She whispered as she brushed past him and out into the dining room, leaving him staring after her in the kitchen.

Hehe. I just put ice down my cousins shirt a few minutes ago. Water is quite valuable.

Anyways, Arnav is a better cook than Khushi no surprise there. But i can't be sure if Khushi was mad at Arnav's habit of bringing up the you-know-what or her own lack of reaction to the same you-know-what.

I love your ff!!!

Evenly matched they are...but she gives back slightly better and sharper than him, maybe because there is a lot more at stake for her and her family.
Upma yummm and a man who can cook, delight 😊
Thoroughly loving the FF.
