A/N: So I usually to never proof read my writings, even if they're essays. I just cant do it and I realized today how many errors I make...not by rereading my previous works but because I was randomly getting these flashbacks and so I went to check whether if they were real, and they were. I apologize to you all for my utter laziness. There may be more mistakes, typos and forgetfulness in the future, kindly ignore them. Thanks!
Chapter 5:
Arnav came home and smelled food'burnt food. He dropped his bag on the table and rushed to the kitchen to see his new roommate flipping a sandwich on a pan.
"Aaargghh" Khushi cried at the dark brown side in front of her.
"What are you doing" Arnav asked cautiously.
She turned to see him standing behind her watching her with curiosity.
"I-I kind of burnt my sandwich" she grumbled quietly while placing it on the plate.
"Why were you even using a pan to begin with?"
"Uhh because when you don't have a proper sandwich maker, you gotta do with what you got and I was craving a grilled cheese sandwich"
"You are not going to eat that, are you? he asked hesitantly.
"Why not? Of course I will, its not like its burnt coal. Just a bit off scraping with a knife will make it fit to be eaten" she said grabbing a knife and setting to do just that.
Arnav opened his mouth, then closed it shut, deciding to drop the matter right there. As he approached the refrigerator to grab some water, he remembered how he hadn't done any groceries since he arrived. Instantly he felt irresponsible, clearly the girl had gone out and gotten some. He wouldn't let it happen again, he thought. It was not like it was her decision to come and stay with him, he had agreed to keep her and thus he should take care of her needs at least inside the house'for the time being.
Khushi didn't know how to tell him she had made some tuna salad for him. At first she wasnt going to make him anything at all but then felt bad about eating by herself and she couldn't ever not share food with anyone. He most probably didnt know how to cook and thats why lived on those bars, she had thought before starting to chop the vegetables.
"Umm I made tuna salad if you're hungry" she told him.
He stood still, his mouth filled with the swig he had just taken. Brain stopped signalling to the throat to swallow the water and instead went huh...whaaat??
After a minute or two, Arnav went and sat awkwardly at the table across from her. He took the bowl and looked down into it.
"He better eat" Khushi muttered to herself. Yeah she kinda forced it upon him but that doesnt mean he should ignore it. Its food, there are a billion people in Africa who are hungry. She herself would have eaten it but she strongly disliked salads. Thoughts started buzzing through her head.
Either her head or tongue, one of them had to go off when was even in an itty bitty of worry or stress. Khushi pushed the thoughts away and chewed on her sandwich, savoring the warm melted cheese, tanginess of the tomato and pickles and the toasted buttered toast in her mouth...Yummm
She would have closed her eyes in ecstasy but he was in front and there was already an awkwardness between them.
Arnav picked up the fork, digging it into the bowl and took a bite. It was okay...pretty good. He usually avoided tuna because of the after smell it left in his mouth but he was hungry and taking a peek at the girls face told him he should quietly eat.
She got up with her plate at the same time Arnav moved forward and motioned her to leave it.
She mumbled a thanks and looked around to do something, fiddling with her hands, his presence and kind gesture getting to her head. Upon not finding anything she quickly retreated back to her room.
~~~
Arnav came out into the living area and made himself comfortable on the sofa. Putting his legs up on the table, he switched on the tv. He liked how he had the tv placed on the wall in the corner. It helped him de-stress by looking out at the city's night with faint sounds of news in the background playing as music, glancing every few minutes at the screen. Just right way of spending an evening, he thought to himself.
He felt her in the room. Putting his head back on the sofa he looked at her, she was changed into night clothes, coming towards him,
"hey" he greeted throatily.
She smiled and sat on the sofa next to him. The screen now had a weatherman making exaggerated facial expressions and going on about how bad the winds will get.
khushi was already tired of staying inside the four walls when only a day had passed and she had gone out for a bit in the middle. She would always be out back home. Work, school and friends took up her entire day and most of the evening. Being alone, she couldn't help but think of how she was all alone in a big city.
She had come out into the living area when she heard the sound of tv. She had to start somewhere in making friends or acquaintances. So she came out with the intention to make a small talk with the dude she would be staying with and didn't even know his full name. He hadn't bothered to tell her his name after she told him hers in the morning today after drinking all his coffee.
"Why did you agree to keep me?" she asked him.
He heard her speak after a long silence. He let her be in her thoughts, while her close presence attacked all his senses.
"Its no big deal, they had called explaining the situation and I just agreed to help. You have to have good relations with the government if you are going to have to interact with them somtime in life" he replied with difficulty.
He wanted to ask her side of the incident but couldnt, she was too close for him to put words together. He got angry at himself for acting in such a teenage way.
"Thanks for going to the store and bringing in stuff, I should have done that before. Let me pay you back for the items" he told her instead.
"Oh you're welcome and its fine, if it happens again you can pay me then...I'll make sure to ask" she grinned at him.
They fell into another silence, trying to ignore the ignore the feelings that shouldn't even be there in the first place.
He switched to discovery channel and for a whole hour they watched how a lioness found a baby bird and nurtured it instead of tearing and gobbling it up. If you really think about it, it quite interesting actually.
He got up and told her he was going to bed.
"Hold on a second, you never told me your name" Khushi called out to him.
He looked at her, "its Arnav, Arnav Singh Raizada" and left.
"Khuroos, didn't even try to talk back" Khushi grumbled switching off the tv and made her way to her room disappointed in him but happy she at least got to know his name. It was a start in some way she thought and plopped herself on the bed, sleep instantly taking over.
