Femme Fatale

Chapter Thirteen

Burning Past

Rules for agents 13:

Create boundaries to protect

---------------------------------------

Pari woke up coughing as smoke surrounded her and could feel her throat burning as she sucked in the harsh air. Opening her eyes, she was surrounded by heat and light.

Her room was on fire!

Immediately she jumped out of bed, getting onto the floor. Even as she was crawling towards the door, she could only be concerned about everyone else in the house. She was hit with desperation when she saw that the door was burning and would not be a suitable way to get out.

Frantically looking around, she tried to find another way to get out and was relieved to see the window. Somehow she managed to turn towards the window and break the glass to get out. Crawling out, she could feel tiny shards of glass scratch her but she hardly cared. She was too preoccupied with thoughts of others being stuck inside.

But as she ran out onto the front of the house she saw that everyone was out already.

"Pari are you okay?" Everyone, including the cook and Yash Uncle rushed towards her and were soon hovering around her. "The fireman was just going to save you. We were so worried that you would be stuck inside"

"I am okay" Pari coughed out, not wanting to make people worry even though she could feel the burn with every breath. "How is everyone else?"

At that Yash gave her a cryptic look, with a hint of pain in his eyes that Pari couldn't understand. "Pari, your room was the only one on fire"

----------------------------

Rajiv, still contemplating Geet and Maan, went up to the pair. Smoothly he interjected, "Maan can I have a dance with the lady?"

Maan raised an eyebrow, curious about the interruption, but nonetheless he took a step back to let his dad dance with Geet.

As Rajiv and Geet started to dance, they both looked at each other with big smiles. It was a rare chance that the two got to spend time together despite being so important to one another.

"How is my girl doing?" Rajiv asked in the tone of a proud father.

For the barest of seconds Geet's eyes flickered towards Maan, who was by this time talking to a beautiful young lady, typical! But just as quickly she was focusing on Rajiv, "Just doing my job Baba, nothing more."

"Did you find anything out?" He asked with concern, not sure of what was happening. "Is there any reason to be concerned."

"Remember the firewalls I set up in the Khurana computer systems?" Geet smiled as she spoke, so that no one could get a glimmer of their conversation, "Well apparently someone was trying to break into your system. I am still tracing the culprit but I can tell you that the person had to be very skilled to get as far into the system as they did. Which makes it seem that it is an organisation as opposed to a single entity." Seeing the growing concern on Rajiv's face, Geet reassured, "Don't worry, I'll find the person. It's what I do best"

"I know" Rajiv gave a sad smile, "But I still worry"

"Don't worry, I have everything under control" She squeezed his hand lightly, "I have an another agent here to protect him. I know everyone in the room, even potential weapons they have. I also have two guns as well as three knives stored in my dress right now. Nothing can get passed me, you should know that"

Rajiv felt the familiar pang as he understood her dedication to her job, not to mention her not realising that he was also concerned about her, not just Maan. If Maan was his son, Geet was his daughter. "What about you? Who will look after you?"

"Me?" Geet's tone hardened, "What's the worst that can happen? Me dying? Well that will hardly be the end of the world. Death has follow me around since birth, so maybe with my death it will stop."

"No!" Rajiv protested whilst trying to keep his voice low, "You are so much more than that. You are more important than you know."

Realising that she was making her Baba worried, she changed tactics, "Okay, I didn't mean to upset you. I am trained for this Baba, so you shouldn't worry about me. It's my job"

Rajiv just sighed, knowing that he was fighting a hopeless argument.

As the dance drew to a close, Geet smiled up at him, "How can anything bad happen while I have my Baba?" With that she walked away from him and towards Maan.

Poor Maan, while smirking like he usually did and flirting, again as usual, really didn't want to spend time with the social leeches. But he had to put up with it.

"Darling, we must have dinner some time" The lady leaned forward so that her ample cleavage was visible, " Its been too long"

Its really to easy, Maan thought with growing amusement, Where is the chase if they stalk me? Where is the subtlety if they flaunt their assets under my nose? Still, I am lucky.

Just as he was about to make one of his cutting comments, about her last husband, his ever efficient secretory interrupted, "Sir"

"What happened?" He turned to Geet while trying to conceal to a smile at the disgruntled look on the socialites face. "Anything urgent?"

"Yes sir, its very important" Geet's eyes were wide and innocent. Coming from anyone else, he would have been worried but he already knew her well enough to understand that she was playing one of her crazy tricks. "You asked me to give you, your medication. You know for your" here she lowered her voice into a mock whisper which was easily audible to everyone, "nasty infection in that part" She glanced down at his trouser in case there had been any doubts and held out a blue tablet.

Maan smirked as he realised what Geet was doing. He should have been offended but he couldn't help but enjoy the joke. So he readily took the pill from her and was happy to realise that it was only a mint.

"Ummm'.I better go" the socialite scampered off but not before glancing at Maan's crotch.

Maan raised an eyebrow at Geet, "An infection? And where exactly is the infection?"

"Well, you do have bad breath sir" Geet gave a cheeky grin, "So it might be an infection around there and a mint can help with clearing the bad breath."

"Well, do you want to see if it worked" Not caring a bit if everyone was staring, after all he was Maan Singh Khurana, "Come closer" There was a glint in his eyes that said he was willing to take the challenge further. Let's see how confident Ms Handa really is.

But this was one challenge Geet wasn't going to indulge in, so she took a step back. "No sir, you might contaminate me. Wouldn't want to get your dirty germs. God knows where your mouth has been, after all you have kissed scores of women!"

"Jealous?" Maan smirked even more, not wanting Geet to get the upper hand. Your days of flustering me are over Handa! "Not happy that I have kissed so many people?"

"Of course sir!" Maan blinked as Geet admitted to it so quickly, "It isn't fair. I want to kiss just as many guys! Maybe you can tell me the number of girls you have kissed and I can try to match up to it"

"Geet!" Maan hissed, even as he was amused. "Did you fall on your head when you were a kid or were you born this way?"

But Geet ignored him and continued, "It's for research purposes. Sir have you ever kissed another man?"

"GEET!" This time Maan was genuinely rattle, "No! I haven't kissed a man!"

"No need to get so defensive" again she gave a fake innocent look, "Just wanted to learn from your experience, after all you are so wise and knowledgeable"

"Why don't I give you some practical experience?" Maan eased into his usual flirtatious manner, "And then you can see why I make the women swoon."

"No thanks" Geet blinked and responded quickly, "Sir remember I don't want to became the percentage of women who succumb to your so called charms. If you need a body to warm your bed I suggest a hot water bottle."

Maan laughed, "Good advice. Also thanks for saving me from the harpy, she was annoying me to death."

"My pleasure" Geet smirked, not lying about her intentions but her eyes caught something behind Maan. Seeing that her attention was elsewhere Maan turned to see what had caught her eye and saw that she was staring at a middle aged man, who was quite familiar to him.

"That's Mr Gulvinder Singh" Maan told her, assuming that she was curious about him. "He is involved in politics as well as being one of the leading industrialist. Very powerful and he definitely knows it"

"I know him" there was something in her tone that caught Maan's attention but just as quickly she was back to normal, "What do you think about him?"

"Well'there is something about him that puts me off" Maan frowned as he tried to voice his instinctive dislike of the man. "He seems to analyse everyone and with subtlety manipulate them." Clearing his frown he continued, "But anyways, I should go and talk to him"

Geet smiled at him, "Sure sir. I should leave now anyways"

So Geet watched as Maan walked towards Gurvinder and silently contemplated the situation.

--------------------------

Rajiv had known that there would be a day when he would have to tell Pari the truth but he hadn't thought it would be so soon.

However the decision had been taken out his hands because nothing was more important than her safety.

"Baba, why was my room the only one on fire" Pari was too smart to not pick up on the truth and the suspicions. She had always been intuitive and intelligent. Another child may have ignored the situation or wilful misunderstood it but she couldn't. "Was someone trying to hurt me?"

Sitting her down, he felt his heart ache for the small girl who still had soot across her face from the fire, underlining to him why he couldn't avoid the conversation.

"Geet" he used her real name, feeling the importance of utmost honesty. Rajiv could have tried to cushion the truth but he spoke to her like an adult, showing her respect for her intelligence. "You know that your family was'..killed. The same people tried to kill you. It was for this reason that I had brought you here, in this small village but even this place isn't safe anymore. That is why we need to keep you safe, take you far away from here."

"But why are they after me?" Geet asked, unnaturally calm for the situation, "There must be a reason"

Rajiv closed his eyes for a moment and took a deep breath before he answered, "Yes darling, there is a reason. Listen carefully to what I say. Just before you were there was a project developed by the defence force called the Angel Project'..or as we used to say, the Pari Project"

And Rajiv proceeded to tell Geet about the project that had shaped Geet's life before she had been born.
