Nice discussion, my take...in reality, you can't generalize... in some situations MIL is dominant whereas in others DIL. Many factors together work for one's weak position. Most important is the son or husband's attitude. I feel imrti devi is beyond control due to her son's attitudes towards their wives. They are not able to balance between mother and wife.
