1. Why was Veer Zaara not able to re-create the magic of DDLJ at the Indian box office? I've seen Veer Zaara multiple times, and consider the film a classic, but I always feel surprised when I remember that the film was only a Hit in India? Why is that??

2. I was watching Tashan a few days back, and even though i don't consider it a great film, do you think the film would work if it were to be released in 2012, now that action/masala films dominate the box office? Remember that at that time period (2007-2008), the biggest hits were a different mix of genres such as Chak De India (sports), Partner (Comedy), Welcome (Comedy), OSO (Comedy/Drama), but noways action entertainers rule the box office. So would Tashan work today?

Similarily, what about Main Hoon Na? What do you think the lifetime net collections would be for the film in India if it were to release today?

And what about the hilarious sex comedy Masti? One of my personal favourite films!

DDLJ worked because when DDLJ released, only action films/slapsticks were coming out left, right and center. Sunny Deol, Sunil Shetty, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgan and their action films or it was Govinda and his comedies...that is all that was coming out during that time period. DDLJ was the anti-thesis of that, completely. It had a hero and a heroine making efforts to placate the family into agreeing to their love. This was almost unheard of for that time period because until then we only saw lovers running away from the evilness of the respective families...😆 So yea most people could connect with that sentiment. Plus, the songs worked. Veer Zaara on the other hand, came out during the age of romance. It was a very been-there-and-done-that concept for the 2000s.

As for Tashan, I believe most people completely missed what Tashan stood for. The way I saw it, Tashan was a complete parody of the 70s/80s masala. I saw it as that couple of years after it had released and enjoyed watching it. I never took it seriously so the plot fell into place for me. The characters were more like caricatures of the yesteryear protagonists and antagonists. They weren't meant to be taken seriously...at least that is what I thought.

I see your point. But i feel that overall, Veer Zaara was a better film than DDLJ.

Never liked the movie Veer Zaara. I would consider DDLJ a much better film than that.

I found Rani's character as a lawyer laughworthy. She just kept crying in the mvie at the drop of a hat..now lawyers are supposed to be tough individuals and not cry babies I dont want to diss Rani, she is a fantastic actress, but just did not like the way her role was sketched out!

i personally didnt like veer-zaara! i think it was no way close to DDLJ at all! also i think kajol was totally natural in DDLJ where as preity was just average, she didnot impress!

As for tashan, gross films which have no grip cant work even if they release in 2015 or later! Take players for example, it was action, had all the masala but failed in today's time when such films are ruling! Tashan would have been a disaster the same way AV turned out ot be!

Mein ho na would have surely crossed 100 crore if released today just replace sushmita with katrina and the collections would have been twice higher for sure (even though i love sushmita more but katrina sells and she can do such roles the best)

masti worked back then too, if released today it would have been a confirmed flop. When a movie staring VIVEK and AFTAB releases in TODAY's time, i guess we dont need to guess how low its opening and collections would be. That time was vivek's better time thats why the movie worked, today a movie with star cast like vivek, aftab, tara sharma and amrita would only get rejected!

Indian audience never ceases to amaze me...a beautiful movie like Veer-Zaara did not do so well and rubbish movies like Dabangg and Ready were super hits...beats me😕...I was not able sit through these two movies...Ready I stopped halfway...and Dabangg...I had to fast-forward and watch...😕..so u never know which movies click with the audience...the quality of a movie has nothing to do with the BO results...

I agree..Veer Zaara was a classic romantic movie barring a few cheesy moments..i still do cry when i watch the scene where Saamiya comes to know Zaara is staying in Veer's house..Dabangg was okay..Ready,the less said the better..I forced my husband to watch the movie with me,he slept off before the interval itself..but I had to act as if I enjoyed the whole movie as it was my suggestion!😆from now on,I will think twice before suggesting a Salman movie to him!😛
