Here are the Mahiwals
Shweta Kawaatra and Varun Badola are playing Soni Mahiwal. And before you start visualising them pining for each other in the immortal love story, let us tell you that while Shweta plays Soni, Varun plays her husband Suresh Mahiwal in the UTV-produced weekly comedy, Soni Mahiwal which started a week ago on Doordarshan. It is directed by Rajesh Puri (veteran actor best known as Lallu of Hum Log). It's about a "Karol Bagh kind-of couple" as Kawaatra puts it and "their day to day problems." Problems like the wife wants to buy a washing machine for Rs 18000, but her husband wants to think at least 10 times before giving in to her demand.
Interestingly, the two actors are working together for the first time on screen. Says Badola, "But Shweta and I go back a long way." "10 years" adds Kawaatra, "We are friends first and because we know each other for so long, it becomes easier to work with each other." Incidentally, the two have been shown as being married for 10 years! Badola reminisces how they both had come to the industry looking for work and how they would sit and talk for hours. "While I would show scripts I had written to her, she would tell me about her aspira tions. We never got a chance to work with each other till three years ago when we were offered this show." Kawaatra sports a very traditional Punjabi salwar-kurta-parandi look in the serial. "Soni is a very cute, nave woman. She does her pati ki seva but then she also harrows him with her demands." Kawaatra says that since as an actor she gets bored easily, the story of Soni Mahiwal is just what the doctors ordered for her "because every week the stories change." Badola who's worked in a comedy called Yeh Hai Mumbai Meri Jaan and has a good sense of humour says that Puri "who is such a good comic actor himself makes things easier for us." Finally, while Badola is looking forward to two shows called Arranged Marriage with wife Rajeshwari Sachdev, and Ek Chhabi Pados Ki, Kawaatra may be do ing another show soon. Family fact file Kawaatra and Badola are known to not do just any role. While 'Pallavi' still remains Kawaatra's calling card, Badola is remembered for portraying a mentally challenged man in Ekta Kapoor's Koshish Ek Aasha. Both are married to actors. Kawaatra to Maanav Gohil, Badola to Rajeshwari Sachdev. While the former couple are doing a kiddie film, the latter are doing a serial
