Chapter 11

"Ah Mr Raizada, come in" Dr Sengal pointed to a chair opposite him while Khushi sat on the bed, still wearing the coat-gown worn for her examination. "I was just talking to your wife about the sonogram. I wanted to make sure that after the miscarriage there are no complications in the endometrium; that is the inner linen of the uterus."

Khushi nodded slowly. "I know what it is" seeing Arnav's bemused expression, she explained hurriedly "Actually I've been reading a few books on this subject when I found out I was pregnant" initially she had found it difficult to understand the writings because most of the books the librarian provided her were in English but then with the help of a Hindi-English dictionary, she managed to finish three books within the span of a month and surprisingly, she was starting to like reading.

"Is there anything I should worry about?"

"No everything seems fine. Besides there was not much chance of having left over embryo since you miscarried around your second month of pregnancy and there were no infections or anything of the sort." Khushi shook her head, silently agreeing.

"You should be thankful that you didn't have to resort to surgical procedures like D&C to remove the left over embryo. Most women have to, because there are complications even while they miscarriage."

Khushi shuddered while clutching the sheet covering the rubber-layered bed nervously. She had read about the ill fated D&C surgery.

"So there's nothing to fear?"

"Everything seems fine. You said there are no pains, no nausea or any other significant changes in your body right?"

Khushi shook her head again in affirmative while Arnav visibly let out a slow sigh of relief.

"Good. Now about your nutrient diet, you're daily taking your vitamins and iron tablets right?"

"Yes Doctor"

"Good. Well you are free to go then" he smiled at her benignly and then looked at Arnav and then back at her. "I'm guessing you're thinking of family planning again soon?" he added with a wink, eyes sparkling merrily behind his hone rimmed glasses.

---

Arnav led her back to the car, his mind whirring and frothing in a panicked undercurrent; his eyes replaying Khushi's expectant smile as she looked at him with nervous yet anticipating eyes while they spoke to the doctor.

"family planning"

Was he taking the right decision? Dr Gowrikar, the urologist's appointment was scheduled a week from today but he was still hesitant about carrying out his plan. After all he didn't want to hurt Khushi in any possible way. But then, wasn't he actually protecting her from the evils of another pregnancy?

The conversation he had with the man from the gynaecologist office had shaken him to the core and he was far from being in a calm state of mind to take a rational decision right now. When it came to Khushi he never was able to implement his usual cool calculated decision making skills. He knew this was his one weakness but then he'll never be able to change it, how much he tried.

---

Khushi kept a light chatter on their way back home and insisted on stopping for an early dinner at one of her new favourite restaurants which she first got to know from Anjali as it was one of her own personal favourites. Arnav gave in resignedly; Khushi had been cooped at home for quite some time now. She probably was tired sitting at home being idle. He usually tried avoiding eating in public at all times and resorted to it only when it was absolutely unavoidable. He had his fair share of business luncheons to last him a life time and there was still a long way to go.

"Haven't been in this place since the last time I came with Di and that was two months back" Khushi said excitedly as she hopped out of the SUV, practically bouncing with enthusiasm. Arnav followed her, hiding a smile as he watched her look for the perfect spot for them; her gaze wondering over the restaurant, looking for the right table.

"Over there!" she pointed to the far right corner overlooking a beautiful landscape, set with a water fountain gurgling merrily as it sprouted water artistically into the air.

"Khushi there's a couple with a kid right beside that table. I'm not sitting next to them. Kids could be annoying especially when their mothers insist on shovelling food into their mouths"

"Oh don't be such a spoil sport." Khushi whispered crossly while she took his hand and led him to the table.

"Isn't this nice? I always wanted to sit near a waterfall and have dinner" Khushi said contentedly as she sat down enthusiastically and inhaled the rich fragrance of a rose jutting out from the vase.

Arnav watched in quiet amusement while Khushi poured over the menu and ordered practically all the food on display and began digging into the food in feverish excitement. "I tell you, this place is the best" she insisted as she took a huge bite off an aloo parata.

"Don't give me that look" Khushi scowled, wiggling a spoon at him in disapproval. "My apatite is returning after months. You of all people should be happy since you were the one complaining the most that I don't eat properly."

He cocked an eye brow at her. "Did you hear me say anything now?"

"No but I can tell what you're thinking" Khushi said in a superior voice as she dabbed her lips daintily in a napkin and turned with a flourish to another one of the dishes to attack her way through.

"Do you remember the time we went to this dhabba when your car broke down on the way to Nainatal on a meeting or something? You had the same expression when I was ordering food there" Khushi giggled between a bite. "That was such fun!"

"Fun? You emptied the petrol trunk, knocked your head and fainted into the dickey of the car." Arnav said incredulously as he stared at her exuberant face.

"Haan! Exactly. Those little mishaps that lead to real adventures are what make life so interesting" Khushi smiled softly. "Didn't we get to spend time with each other?"

She suddenly took his hand and leaned into look into his eyes. "Didn't we learn about little bits and pieces of each other that day? Aren't you glad that you missed that meeting?" her eyes sparkled with a curious glow, her eyes holding a world of meaning in it's innocent but wisely depths.

He felt his face relaxing into a smile as her voice penetrated his heart, easing the woes out of his mind. It was true. He had learnt to give into the unexpected. His orderly, rigid life is not the same anymore. Khushi brought in that surprise element he had missed since childhood. He had to admit, he saw life in an altogether different light since her entry into his life- it wasn't the mundane never ending path he always imagined it to be. He smiled more, talked more, laughed more and dreamed more.

"I know I was irritating and you were the laad governor at your best that day, but we did make a small step towards building our relationship. Going back, I can clearly connect those tiny steps leading to where we are today'Remember how you saved me from the goons?" Khushi's eyes took a distant far-off look of reminiscence as she shoved a spoon full of delicious basmathi rice in to his mouth.

Before he could gulp down the rice and tell her off for force feeding him in public, a little tug on his jacket sleeve interrupted him. Looking around he spotted the little boy from the next table standing next to him, his large eyes looking at him in unadulterated curiosity.

"Rahil! Come here darling" a woman's voice was drifted over to them but the little boy ignored it while he stared at him and then at Khushi with large eyes.

"awww!" Khushi crooned, reaching towards him and taking his tiny hand in hers, fondling his face. "Your mumma's calling you. See she's right over there" khushi pointed to the lady sitting across from them while she smiled at her baby. "She's calling you! There, see your mummy's right over there"

The baby gurgled and waddled slowly around the table in tiny zig-zag steps and tugged at one of the shiny ornaments dangling from the end of the cuff of her long sleeved anarkali dress. "Do you like it? Its very shinny isn't it?" Khushi said conversationally and the baby gurgled again in reply.

"I'm sorry. He's very inquisitive these days" the baby boy's mother said while she scooped the boy to her arms.

"Oh no problem. He's absolutely delightful, the prettiest baby I've ever seen" Khushi smiled softly watching the boy now holding on to his mother's shoulder as he chattered to her in baby language.

"Thank you and sorry again" the mother left to return to her table, turning around to give Khushi a grateful smile.

"Oh Arnav, he's so precious" whispered Khushi, her eyes filling with tears.

---

"What are your plans for today?" Arnav asked early in the morning as he flattened the collar of his shirt and fiddled with the tie knot.

"I'm going down to the Anaath Ashram (Children's orphanage). Haven't been there since'anyway that and I got a call from the Cancer hospital about the donations we gave last month. They want to hold a felicitation ceremony and were wondering if you can come since they are holding it in your honour"

"Khushi you know I'm too busy. I'll send some one to represent my self if you don't want to go instead of me."

She sighed. "Common please? It would mean a lot to them"

"Khushi, I said no. I have way too much work. You won't have to do much, just sit in the front row and make small talk. Cover up for me?"

Khushi pouted, opened her eyes wide and turned her best 'pleading eyes' look at him. "NO" he said with finality as he turned around and strode out of the room while Khushi followed him, whispering furiously to herself "Annoying laad governor".

---

"Anya my little pari, stop wiggling around so that masi can feed you" Khushi kissed the baby's head, inhaling the warm sweet fragrance wafting from her hair while Anya squirmed in her lap. She tried to put a small tea spoon of mashed bananas in her little mouth but Anya shook her head and pointedly looked away.

"Khushi bitiya, no need to insist on it too much. She'll have it when she's hungry" Naani said with an infectious smile as she looked at a deranged looking Khushi trying to feed Anya.

"Naani ji how can she know when she's hungry? She's a baby!"

"Trust me; I'm saying this with experience. You'll know ones you have your own child" She added softly as she watched Khushi's eyes turning downcast. "And you'll have one soon enough"

"Haan Khushi ji, although you will get to know about the downside of things soon enough too. It's not as delightful as it seems. Being a mother is difficult" Anjali sat down beside Khushi and fondled her daughter's head. "Labour pains, the aftermath of birth, dealing with the tension, expectations of motherhood' they all get to you" Anjali sighed as she looked at Khushi in the eye and touched her face softly. "You need to be physically as well as mentally prepared for it."

"Actually di one of my father's sisters is a mid-wife and me and Khushi used to help her with her work when we were in Lacknow in our late teens" Payal said while she kept a piping hot dish of Pakoras on the coffee table in front of them. "Most of the women there want to have home deliveries, so mid-wifery is very much in demand, and then some don't feel comfortable going to a male gynaecologist for their deliveries."

"Oh I never knew your maasi is a mid wife! So you must have seen the painful side of things"

"We have helped our maasi with deliveries" Khushi said with a smile, a rapturous sparkle in her eyes. "It's an incredible experience helping a mother and another human see light of day. That itself was a life changing experience. Seeing the mother's face when her new born is put into her hands for the first time always made me tear up."

"Of course! Motherhood is a blessing to a woman, a stage of life that will fulfil a woman and transform her for life. It's a beautiful change. One can say, it completes you" naani said while she smiled at her grand daughter and grand-daughters-in-law. "It's a struggle, being a mother, but it's all worth it at the end of the day"

"Khushi ji, are you going to the orphanage today?" Anjali asked as Khushi handed Anya and took out a napkin to wipe Anya's mouth.

"Yes di. I'm just about to go" suddenly Khushi sighed heavily. "It's painful to see children without proper parental care. The trustees try their best to provide them with everything but some things can't be replaceable, how much we try."

"Have their parents passed away?"Anjali asked, her voice sympathetic as she patted Khushi's hand

"No di, most of their parents have left them on the streets, some little babies not much older than two or three days old get put into the orphanage because their mothers have abandoned them" Khushi felt angry helpless tears welling in her eyes. The injustice of it ate her from insides.

"It's horrendous, I agree. Social stigma, family pressures, monetary and financial issues.. all these come to play. Irresponsibility is the biggest factor here. And then some are helpless and just not ready to become parents. But nothing justifies abandoning your child. It's cruelty at its best."

Some are just not ready to become parents

Naani's words reverberated in Khushi's mind as she went to pick up the phone, now ringing off its hook. Was she ready to become a parent yet? Was her relationship with her husband secure enough for this magnanimous change in her life? Would she have been a good mother if her initial pregnancy had worked through?

"I'm coming!" Khushi thought as she rushed to the phone and picked it up, panting; clutching a stitch on her side.

A crisp male voice answered her.

"Hello, this is from Dr Gowrikar's office. Can I speak to Mr Arnav Singh Raizada?"

Comment!
PS- Thanks everyone for all the fabulous input on the new development and *cough* Arnav's decision 😉
PSS- This chapter is like the fundamental chapter of the future of this FF. Every single part of it will lead to mini plots in the story :)
PSSS- Sorry peeps, I'm not accepting buddy requests any more. Already planning to go on another round of 'hacking the PM list'

Put some brains in Arnav head. He shouldnt do that proc. it's nt fair on her. Adoption is a noble act. But becoming a mother is a beautiful experience. Every woman should be able to feel it. Some r nt so fortunate. Hence he shouldnt take it away frm Khushi.
