CHAPTER 20. AN UNOFFICIAL FIRST DATE

Place - A Park near the Doctor's Clinic

Maan stared at Soni while Soni, sitting on a bench, looked around the park. The park was beautiful. It was filled with variety of trees, flowers and plants. There were swings around on which kids were swinging while their mothers were pushing them around. There were monkey bars with some kids doing monkey tricks on them. Sonia laughed softly at their antics. She was looking all around trying to capture each and every moment she was spending outside. She knew that till her legs healed properly she won't be able enjoy outdoors that much. Maan was oblivious to his surroundings. He was standing a bit far from her, leaning on a tree, observing her. His focus was totally on Soni.

But Maan was not the only one staring at Soni. Another person hidden behind the bushes dialed a number. He spoke up, "Bhaiji, Geet ko dekha hai maine, zinda." He listened to the person speaking on the other end and replied, " Haan Bhaiji. Main sach keh raha hoon. Rab di Sau (God Promise)." After listening to some instructions, the person replied, "Haan, Bhaiji. Lagta hai bilkul akeli hai. Aap Dilli aa jaao. Hum is baar use zinda nahin chodenge." He cut the phone after talking some more and looked at Soni. "Geet Handa! Is baar tu nahin bachegi. Dekhta hoon tujhe is baar kaun bachaata hai." The person walked away with a smirk on his face.

Place - A Coffee Shop near Khurana Constructions

Arnav and Khushi smiled as the waiter took their order. Arnav went for coffee and advised Khushi to try chocolate milk. Khushi agreed and ordered it. "Toh kaisa laga yeh coffee shop?", Arnav started the conversation. "Achcha hai. Bahut badhiya hai.", Khushi replied. They were seated near the window overlooking the main road. Khushi loved the place. It was airy, colorful and well decorated. She kept on looking all around when Arnav spoke up, "Kya hua? Aise kyun dekh rahi ho?" Khushi smiled and replied with excitement visible on her face, "Hum kabhi aisi jagah nahi aaye hain. Pehli baar hai. Bas is liye jee bharke dekh rahe hain." Arnav smiled tenderly at her innocence. Khushi's face showed confusion for a few moments and Arnav started wondering about what was going in her pretty head. "Waisi aapko sach mein Mithaai nahi pasand?", Khushi asked him in a bewildered tone. "Mujhe Diabetics hai.", Arnav replied. Khushi looked miffed but suddenly she looked like she got an idea and smiled at him.

Place - The Park

Soni turned around and smiled at Maan. Maan smiled back. She waved him to come over but he shook his head and signaled that he was okay standing there. She turned back and went on admiring the greenery surrounding her. After few minutes, he could not resist himself and walked towards her. He sat beside her and she turned and gave him a bright smile. "Kitni khoobsurat jagah hai yeh. Yeh hariyali, yeh pedh paudhe, yeh phool. Aate hi dil vich thand pei gayi." Maan smiled and nodded his head. Before he could say anything, she started chattering about the beauty, Dilli, Dadima, NT, Dev and what not. Maan felt like doing nothing but listening to her chatter non stop.

They had gone to the Doctor today and Doctor Puri had assured Maan that the amnesia was just temporary and very soon she will regain her memory. Maan was still smiling when he had a sudden realization. If she regained her memory, then she will be out of Khurana Mansion pretty soon. She would leave the house. And he will be alone. He suddenly felt his usual loneliness creeping in. He stood up and walked away from her. She stopped in mid-chatter at his reaction but shrugged and went back to watching scenery. By now she had gotten used to his weird reactions. To ward off the feeling of loneliness Maan pulled his mobile out of his pocket and pressed the button for radio.

Place - The Coffee Shop

Khushi was about to say something when the waiter brought their orders over. Khushi took her glass eagerly, as she was about to taste the chocolate milk first time. Arnav took his cup of coffee calmly and glanced at Khushi. Suddenly the radio of coffee shop started blaring with a song.

Khushi took the cup to her lips and took a sip. She suddenly raised her eyes and looked into Arnav's eyes. Arnav felt his breath stop. Her nose and lips were hidden behind the glass but her eyes stared at him as if she could look into his soul. He was mesmerized by her eyes and felt like drowning into them.

The stereo played the beautiful notes of flute but Arnav was still in trance. Khushi was confused by his constant staring and enquired with her eyebrows 'What was wrong?'. He shook his head.

But what's the use of dreaming such things! I don't believe in love Afreen! I just don't! Don't raise my hopes of having you without love or any bondage, Afreen! I won't be able to marry you or give you my love! And this might destroy you!, Arnav looked at her aghast at his thoughts. He looked away from Khushi. No! He can't do that to his Afreen. He had to control his attraction. He could not let this attraction go ahead and destroy her dreams and future. Because she dreamed of marriage and love while he did not believe in them at all. He could offer her nothing but his attraction. And she deserved more than that. He physically turned his body away from her and turned towards the door. Khushi was confused at his gesture but shrugged and went on drinking her chocolate milk.

Place - The Park

Maan's mobile started blaring and a song called 'Jaadu Bhari Aankhon Waali Suno' started playing. The song had good lyrics and Maan was enjoying it. The first Para of the song had just ended when Soni turned around suddenly and looked into Maan's eyes.

Her eyes tugged his heart strings and captured his eyes. He stood there staring at her. The music started playing and soon the second Para played over.

Maan smiled at the lyrics. If she entered his heart will he actually start singing ghazals for her?

Maan turned serious as the Doctor's words flashed in his head. No! He should not fall for her. He will gain nothing but pain in this love because she will remember her past and leave him soon. He straightened up and made a resolve. He will not fall for her. He averted his eyes from her and Soni frowned.

The song ended with melodious notes on flute and Maan started walking towards Soni. She smiled at him but the smile turned into frown when Maan curtly told her, "Chalo Soni! Bas Hua Ghar Chalte Hain!" Without waiting for her reply, he picked her up and walked off to the car.

Place - Coffee Shop

Khushi frowned when Arnav told her that he had some work to do and offered to drop her home. She responded in negative not wanting Buaji's wrath on her for befriending a guy. He paid the bill for both and walked off without a glance at her. Khushi pouted for a second but soon shrugged her shoulders and walked to the door to look for a rickshaw.

Place - Guest Room at Khurana Mansion

It was night time and Maan was staring at Soni. She was sleeping soundly. They had reached home early but did not say anything to each other. Both were lost in their own thoughts. Maan had eaten his dinner quietly while Soni had happily chattered about the park and what the doctor had said.

Maan put his hand on his heart. He was not allowed to feel anything for her, he instructed his heart. He was attracted to her the first day he met her but the attraction was put on back burner due to the memory loss, the lies and the fight that followed. But today the feelings, the attraction came back and his heart had started beating faster. He could not let this happen again. Already Dadima will be affected by her recovery. If she came to know his feelings, she will suffer more than last time. No, he could not condemn his family to this. His family should not suffer due to him falling in love. Loving Soni will be the biggest mistake for him. He shook his head and walked off to his room.

Place - Arnav's Room at Shantivan

Arnav was lying on the recliner and staring at the stars at his poolside. His mind reminded him of Afreen's eyes and his heart, right on the cue, started beating faster. He closed his eyes and swallowed. Was he falling in love? No, this was just attraction. But his attraction was getting stronger day by day. In college days, he was attracted to many girls but the attraction faded in three or four days but today was the 13^th Day since they met first on the day at the Kothi, and the attraction not only remained but also became stronger. And yes, he was counting. But this is it. His attraction will not grow any more. He won't allow it. He will be curt with her and maintain a firm distance. If not for his sake then for her sake. She was a girl who lived in a fairytale world and believed in love and marriage. This much he knew due to his sister's constant chattering on the dining table. And he was a person who lived in the reality. There was no match between them. He cannot give her what she wanted and deserved. They had no future together. If one of them was earth, then the other was the sky. Aur Dharti Ambar kabhi nahi milte! He sighed and opened his eyes. He got up and went inside the room. He fell on the bed and drifted off to sleep. Before he slept his last thoughts were that whatever happens he will not allow himself to fall in love with her. But Arnav did not know that by thinking this, he took the first step towards love. After all, acknowledging that love exists is the first step towards love, atleast for him.

P.P.S The song is taken from the movie 'Dastak' which was Sushmita Sen's first film. It is a 1996 film and the song is sung by Udit Narayan. I hope this song explained what ASR and MSK felt. I wanted a song which talked not about love but stopping ourselves from falling in love. And when I heard this song on my ipod, I felt this was perfect for this situation. It is one of my favorite songs and I really want you to go and listen to it so that you can truly understand the male leads' feelings.
