Part Four

Heer's eyelids slowly opened to the surroundings of the early morning. She could detect the sun's rays hiding behind the blinds. She felt cold for some odd reason and grabbed the bed sheet pulling it up around her chin and snuggled back into her pillow. Her body stretched hoping to ease her tired muscles. She couldn't figure out why her legs seemed so achy. As the fog in her mind lifted and sleepiness was less prevalent, she began to notice the little things around the room. Candles were lit, clothes were scattered about the floor, and she was naked underneath the covers. Heer gingerly turned her head and saw Prem sleeping soundly on his stomach. His smooth bare back was visible to her making her realized the state of things. A moment of pure panic seized her as her heart raced wildly wondering what she was supposed to do now. She silently crept out of the bed and made her way to the bathroom. She figured the alarm would soon turn on waking Prem and they would then have to face each other. That was a moment she was actually dreading. They had slept together but what did it mean to them? Heer stood underneath the shower pondering the events of last night. She closed her eyes as the warm water soaked through her hair and she recalled how tender and passionate Prem had been. She could feel his lips caressing her skin and his hands touching every inch of her body. Heer's cheeks flushed pink from the memories and she placed her hand on her chest in the attempts to steady her heart. She knew physically nothing wrong occurred last night. But emotionally she wasn't sure if Prem would wake up and regret what had happened the night before. She herself was not sure what she wanted. She thought she wanted to move forward but now that it had happened she wasn't too sure of herself any more. She was so confused.

Heer finished her shower and cautiously slipped back into the bedroom with her towel wrapped around her. She cursed herself for not grabbing her clothes before she ran into the bathroom to take her shower. She would now have to have a serious conversation with her husband while she was only dressed in a bath towel. It was not the most ideal situation she thought. However, when she looked towards the bed she was relieved to see Prem still sleeping. He must have hit the snooze on the alarm she reasoned to herself as she quickly got dressed. She grabbed their clothes and dumped them into the laundry basket in the bathroom. She then proceeded to head towards the door to make her exit. She knew she was acting childishly. She was being a chicken running away like this when she should be talking to her husband. But it was too early in the morning for this emotional rollercoaster and she needed to get breakfast ready. She silently opened the door and then softly closed it behind her forgetting that the night before they had a blackout. The morning alarm was not going to go off.

*******************************************************

It had only been fifteen minutes after Heer left the room did Prem begin to stir in the bed. He rolled over and slung his arm out resting it against the spot where his wife would have been laying. His eyebrows knitted as his hand felt how cold the bed sheet seemed to be. He sleepily cracked one eye open and explored his surroundings. Heer wasn't there. He immediately sat up and inspected the room. He saw that the floor had been cleaned as their wet clothes were no longer present. The candles were still lit but they were near the wick's end. It would not be long before they completely burn out. He glanced towards the alarm clock to see what time it was and saw that it was flashing 12:00am. The electricity had gone out the night before reverting the clock back to its default setting. Prem quickly got out of bed and went and checked the time on his cell phone. It was 7:45am. He was running late. He rushed straight to the bathroom to take a shower.

As he stood underneath the shower head his mind began to wander back to what had transpired the night before. There was only one word to describe what had happened between him and Heer. Incredible. A smirked formed along his lips as he recalled how they had made love. Her skin was so creamy and smooth; so silky to the touch that the mere thought of it made him want to hold her in his arms again. He sighed happily. But as he continued scrubbing himself with soap a tiny seed of doubt began to grow. Why wasn't she there when he woke up? Why didn't she wake him up? His mind started to panic. Had he been too forceful last night? She was willing or at least he thought she was. He had to admit that there were times in the night that his lust just took over. He had roused her from her sleep for a second round in the middle of the night. Prem rubbed the side of his face and covered his mouth thinking perhaps he had been too brazen. He started to silently berate himself for acting too eager. He had let his hormones get the best of him last night. He needed to talk to her and sort things out.

*******************************************************

Prem hurriedly went down the stairs and made his way towards the kitchen. His hair was still fairly damp as he did not take the proper care to dry it in his haste to speak to his wife. When he entered the kitchen he saw much to his disappointment that Heer was talking on the phone. Who could have called at this hour in the morning? And why did they have to do it now when he needed to talk to her? He sighed when he realized it was her best friend, Geet. Those two could spend hours on end chatting about everything and anything or even nothing at all. That was how much they could talk. Prem just stood at the side of the island counter waiting patiently for the conversation to end. Correction; more like hoping the conversation would end soon or that Heer would at least finally notice him standing there. His eyes flexed with hope when she took the jug of orange juice from the fridge and turned around and placed it on the counter. He saw her glance up with a look of surprise that he was just standing there. Prem didn't know what to do so he raised his hand up and waved a greeting of hello. He then felt stupid for doing that as he detected a confused expression on her face when she mimicked it back to him. He inwardly groaned when he heard his cell phone ringing in his pocket. He checked the caller id and saw that it was his mother. "Hello Ma?" he answered.

"It's me Bauji," Lalit replied back.

"Oh, Bauji...how is Sanchita Aunty and Rohan Uncle?"

"Doing very well. Rohan Uncle's yacht is quite something. He invited all of us to come down one weekend for a cruise party," Lalit informed.

"The kids will love that. Suraj loves the water," Prem replied with a smile.

"Yes, I know...I was thinking the exact same thing. Listen, Prem...I'm still about an hour away from the hotel. I need you to go to the hotel to take care of something. I would be there normally but I can't make it in fast enough. Rishi will be waiting for you."

"Sure Bauji. Are you dropping Ma home before you come to the hotel?"

"No, Aunty and Uncle will drop your mother back at the house later this afternoon," Lalit replied.

"Okay, I was heading to this office anyways," Prem said. He hung up the phone and looked over at Heer who was still busy talking on the phone with Geet. "Heer," he called out and then motioned with his hand that he needed to go, "Office.." She nodded her head understanding that the call he just received was related to some important work that needed to be done at the hotel. Prem sighed and grabbed a banana from the fruit bowel and made his way to the garage to his car.

Left on her own Heer silently listened to Geet's tale about something funny her husband Arjun had down with their children. "You know sometimes I wonder about him. He's this brilliant computer programmer but he does the stupidest things some times. No common sense I tell you. Well, enough about me. How are you doing? Prem left for work just now didn't he? Tell me what's on your mind. You sounded a little down when you answered the phone."

"I did?" Heer replied.

"I'm your best friend I know when something is bothering you. So are you going to tell me?" Geet could hear her sighing on the other end making her alert that something major was bothering her.

"Well, I'm going to try to make this fast. Last night we had a rain storm and the electricity went out. I completely forgot about the morning alarm and I woke up on my own but late and I didn't wake up Prem thinking the alarm would go off. But he ended up waking up on his own..so that was good. And luckily today I don't have to be in the clinic until 10am. But there are still a lot of things for me to do. I have to do the laundry and take care of the candles..."

"Heer, you're rambling," Geet simply stated.

"I know. I know," she said nodding her head. She felt nervous but she knew she needed to get it out. She needed to talk to someone about what had happened and what better person to divulge this secret to then her best friend? She took a deep breath and then announced, "Prem and I slept together last night."

"What?! Congratulations!" Greet replied back with excitement. "OMG it took you guys long enough," she then paused when she realized there was silence on the other end. "Wait, this is not congratulations? Are you okay? He didn't force himself on you did he? I swear I'll fly right down and bring a baseball bat and break his legs."

"No Geet, he didn't force himself on me. He was...he was...um very loving," Heer answered. She could feel her cheeks flushing pink and wondered if Geet could tell that this was happening.

"Ooohhh...I see. So Mr. Prem Juneja was loving was he?" Geet teased. "Things went okay? No mishaps?"

"No...everything worked like...um, clockwork," Heer replied.

"So if everything went okay why do you sound so down or unsure?"

"Geet, do you think I'm easy?" Heer asked innocently.

"Easy? Heer, you are not easy. It took two years...that is not easy. Why would you think something like that? Why would he think that about you? Did he say something to you?"

"No, it's just that...I've some experience..and Anurag and I were each other's first...and so he must of thought that I wouldn't know..."

"You are talking complete nonsense you know that? We're in the modern age...I think everyone is allowed to have some experience. And so what if you did? He did too. Obviously he knows what he is doing cause he has a son," Geet replied back. "Are you not telling me something? What exactly did he say to you this morning?"

"We didn't talk," Heer meekly answered. She scrunched her nose and pulled the phone a little away from her ear knowing full well how she would react.

"You Didn't Talk To Him! You need to talk to him Heer. This is such a huge step in your lives...you should be talking to each other."

"I know...I just got scared this morning when I woke up...I didn't know what to say or how to react. Last night it felt so right and this morning I was so confused. We didn't say I love you or anything so I really don't know what he's feeling. This relationship is so complicated," she sighed in frustration.

"Are you in love with him?" It was a simple question that left Heer speechless. She had never fully let herself explore this idea and now that things had happened to this point her mind was fuzzy as to what her answered was. "Hello? Heer, you still there?"

"Yes, I'm still here. I never really asked myself that question before. I know he's a good man, an excellent father to Suraj...I respect him...I care for him..."

"Heer, I'm going to say something please don't take it the wrong way. I know how hurt you were when Anurag died. And I know when your parents arranged this marriage with Prem you were rather reluctant about it and upset at them for arranging it. Two years have passed and a lot of things have changed. The people that we meet that were once new are now a part of our lives...and we too have become a part of their lives as well...attachments formed and new rishtas have developed...I'm not judging and I don't want to push you if you aren't ready but there comes a time and point when we have to move forward. Let go of the past and look to the future. That doesn't mean the past isn't any less important or that you should forget it. It's still there in your memories and in your heart. Guess what I'm trying to say is I want you to be happy. Are you happy where you are? Are you happy with Prem?" Geet softly questioned.

"I am happy. I love his family...Aunty and Uncle are like my own parents...Kul Di is such a wonderful older sister...cooky and crazy...Kiran Juji is funny...their kids just a joy...Preet is the younger brother I wish I always had...and Suraj...I adore him so...he's such a cute kid. And Prem...he's been really understanding...he's a friend that I can't see myself without." Heer paused in reply and sighed, "I know I need to talk to him. We have to sort this out."

"Don't try to compete with the memory of Sanjana. And don't try to compare Prem to Anurag. They are two different people. This is a new relationship...a fresh start...just treat it like that," Geet advised. Heer nodded her head and was about to say something more when she heard little voices crying in the background. "I'm so sorry Heer, but the twins are up. I'll talk to you later, okay. You talk to him. I want details. You do it today. If you don't I'll keep sending you reminders."

"Don't worry. I know. Bye Geet," Heer replied and hung up the phone.

*******************************************************

Heer stared down at her cell phone wondering if it would ever ring. She sighed and picked it up and scrolled to her missed called list to check if by some chance she had missed a call. The last call she missed was from her parents and that was two days ago. She had already called them back. She then checked her text message log and found she did not have any recent texts as a majority of them were a day old. She frowned and placed her phone back down on the desk. She was in her office taking her lunch break. She had grabbed a pre-made salad at a fast-food place before she came into work for her lunch. And now it simply sat open and untouched on her desk. She wasn't feeling very hungry. She just couldn't eat. She had been distracted for most of the day because she hadn't heard back from Prem. She had called his cell phone and left a message that she wanted to talk to him. In the beginning she had been afraid to call and expected that if anyone should be doing the calling it was him. After all he was the man and he did initiate the kissing last night. Eventually, she realized how stupid she sounded when she argued that stance trying to convince herself that she was making the right decision in her head. So she did the nerve-racking task of calling him up first. Of course she called during the time she knew he wouldn't be available. But at least she could say in her defense she did try to talk to him first.

Heer sighed and leaned back in her chair and spun herself around a few times. She reasoned waiting for someone to call you back was the most tummy twirling anxious driven thing ever to experience especially when you really wanted to talk to the person. Her eyes widen when she saw her cell phone screen start to light up. She quickly grabbed her phone and answered, "Hello..."

"Hey it's me Prem." She could detect a subtle nervousness in his voice in his greeting making her gently grin.

"I know the caller id told me," she replied.

"Oh, um right...huh-eh...of course...silly me." She tried to suppress her laugh as he was sounding incredible cute over the phone at the moment. "Um, Heer I hate to spring this on you at the last minute but we have a dinner party to go to tonight. You think you will be able to get ready by 7:00?"

"Oh...dinner party?"

"Yeah, I'm really sorry about this," Prem answered. He had heard the disappointment in her voice and wanted to apologize for putting this on her at the last minute. He never liked it when it was done to him so he could sympathize with her less than enthusiastic response. "I'm really sorry. I just found out about it myself and there is this client there and everything that happened this morning...it's really important I go. If you don't want to come with me I can totally understand."

"No-no, it's fine Prem. I'll come with you," Heer replied.

"Great. Thanks a bunch. I'll pick you up at 7:00 then?" Prem inquired.

"Haan." She could hear him take a hesitant pause and she knew this was her chance to ask so she mustard up her courage and inquired, "Did you get my message?"

"Uh, yeah. I did. I've been really busy. I---" Heer strained her ears as she heard some ruffling sounds as if his hand was cupping over the receiver. She could make out a faint masculine voicing inquiring about some papers. A few seconds later Prem was back on the phone his voice crisp and clear again. "I'm sorry Heer. There is an important business call I have to take. We'll talk later?"

"Okay," she simply replied and then heard him end the call. She sighed again and wondered if they were ever going to have a chance to talk at all now that they had to attend some business dinner party.

*******************************************************

Silence filled the car cabin as Prem diligently drove home. The dinner party had been rather long but a success as he had been able to smooth over tensions between two partners the hotel had been working with. Prem glanced over at Heer to see how she was doing. She had requested for the radio to be turned off as she had a headache. He sighed inwardly to himself for their current communicative state. He had wanted to talk to her but work had gotten in the way tonight. They barely had a moment to themselves at the party. He was regretting his decision that he had requested her to attend the dinner with him.

Heer stared out the passenger side window taking in the scenery of the city at night. Her head was throbbing and she just wanted to go home and go to bed. Her ears perked to the distinct sound of the signal clicking as they were waiting at the light to make a left turn. It was strange how the silence of the radio ushered in sounds that one never really took noticed of before, like the pressure of the leather seat changing as the person shifted their weight or the switching of the gas pedal to the brake pedal. Heer's eyebrows crinkled as she realized where Prem was taking them. She turned and gave a questioning look at her husband.

"You didn't eat much at dinner. Are you hungry? What would you like to eat?" Prem inquired. He had brought them to McDonald's and was heading to the drive thru.

"I'm fine Prem."

"No, you should eat something. That's probably why you have a headache right now," he reasoned. "Anyways I'm hungry myself. The dinner buffet wasn't the most appealing tonight."

"A salad is fine."

Prem slowly rolled the car to the speaker and placed his order, "Two number 10s the Chicken McNugget meal. Both with a Coke and barbeque sauce." Heer looked at him wondering why he had ignored her request for a salad. Prem pulled the car forward and simply explained, "You need something more than just a salad. And I know you like Chicken McNuggets because whenever Suraj gets his kids meal and has one chicken McNugget left over you always eat it. You didn't think I noticed did you? Suraj knows too. He told me that he only eats three of the four pieces because he knows you like it." Heer's eyes flexed with amazement that the father and son duo had figured that out. "So, don't argue with me here." Prem paid the drive thru clerk and then passed the bags over to Heer to hold. She checked through the contents to ensure their order was correct. "Mmm...smells really fresh and hot."

"They are," Heer replied and handed him a fry.

"Should we go home, go inside and eat, or eat in the car?" Prem asked. "It's fresh and hot right now...be a shame to have it grow cold."

"If we go home it will get cold. We can eat it now but I really don't feel like going inside to eat," Heer replied.

"Then in the car it is," Prem stated as he parked the car into a parking spot.

They unbuckled their seat belts and started to distribute their food. Prem opened a packet of barbeque sauce and handed it to Heer. She took it and set it on the dashboard so she could open her box of chicken nuggets. She took a sip of her drink and then glanced upward to see Prem munching away at his food. She tried not to giggle but her attempts of hiding her smirk did not go unnoticed by him. He arched his eyebrow at her wondering what was so funny. Heer reached over and wiped some barbeque sauce away from the corner of his mouth. Prem's eyes widen at her touch as she had used her thumb instead of a napkin. He was surprised but he also felt a bit silly. So he immediately started wiping his face with a napkin concern that he had more sauce somewhere on his face. His eyes secretly shifted over to her to see her reaction and saw that she had gently placed the thumb she had used to her mouth and tasted the sauce. He then sat there staring at her.

Heer didn't realize what she was doing until she pulled her thumb down. She felt her cheeks flush warm as she couldn't believe that she had just done that in front of him. What must he be thinking of her right now? Feeling her husband's lingering gaze she slowly lifted her eyes to meet his. Their eyes gently locked and she felt her heart suddenly ache out of control. They sat there staring at each other for a few minutes before Prem turned his head away breaking the trance. He pretended to cough to try to break the awkward silence that he knew was occurring between them. He knew he needed to say something because he couldn't deal with the jittery feeling in the pit of his stomach any longer. They couldn't continue hiding from a discussion that needed to take place. Prem took a deep breath and decided it was time.

"I'm sorry. I know we needed to talk...about last night. I wanted to this morning but then Bauji called and all these things were happening at work. I know that's not a good excuse...and I'm not trying to make it one...I'm sorry..."

"No Prem, I could have tried as well," Heer interjected. "I'm sorry."

"But you did. You called me," Prem replied turning to look at her. He could see this emotion in her eyes and it was making him self-conscious. He couldn't meet her gaze so he shifted his eyes away. He was finding it difficult to speak. He felt like he was sixteen again and confessing for the first time his feelings to a girl he cared about. "Last night...I apologize if I took advantage...I mean if it felt rushed. I guess...it's been awhile and I...um, I hope it was okay...and if not I can get better," his eyes flexed as he realized what was coming out of his mouth, "Oh God, what am I saying to you?" He rubbed the back of his head feeling stupid and glanced back over at Heer who was simply sitting there patiently waiting for him to finish. "Never mind what I just said...rewind. Delete it. What I mean to say is that last night was really special. But I hope I didn't pressure you. That's the last thing I wanted to do. If you want to take a few steps back that's fine with me. I know we're all out of order...we got married and then had to get to know each other. And both of us had to have our time to adjust to everything because of our past relationships," there was a hesitant pause as he swallowed before he continued, "I really want to thank you for accepting Suraj...for taking care of him...for loving him...for treating him like one of your own. I really appreciate it. Words can't describe how much you've done for this family. You're amazing. You truly are Heer. I feel so blessed to have you in my life." He felt his heart racing and a sudden cold sweat flowing down his back, "I...if...if you're willing to..I mean," loosening his tie and putting his finger between his collar and neck, "um, that is...uh, it's kind of warm in here isn't it?" He adjusted the air conditioning vents and inquired, "Are you getting enough air?"

Heer gave a small smile and picked up his drink offering it to him. "Prem here. I'm fine."

"Oh, thank you," he replied and took a long drink. He knew he had to finish what he wanted to say. It was important to complete this conversation. "Heer, I know you had many dreams of what your life would have been like. I know you probably never thought your life would have turned out like this. I don't know if I'll be able to live up to the ideal husband you've dreamt about but I'm willing to try." He saw her eyes' grow wide and he knew he had to clarify his statement. "Um, I guess what I'm trying to say is...maybe we should date..."

"Date?" Heer repeated.

"Is that too fast? We don't have to date if you don't want to," Prem hurriedly replied trying to correct his statement. "We can be friends. If that is what you want..." He was stopped from saying anything else when he felt her hand clamp his mouth shut. His eyes widen at her reaction. Did he say something stupid again?

"No." Prem's eyes flexed wondering what that meant. Was she rejecting him? Was she saying no to dating? Or was she saying no to being friends? "Aren't we friends already?"

He nodded his head and moved her hand downward. "We are...I just thought---" He was interrupted from saying anything more by her soft lips on his. It was a short kiss. When she pulled back he just stared at her. She had this smile on her face. The more he looked at it the more it made him want to smile. The corners of his mouth soon lifted upward into a goofy grin.

"You're so cute," Heer replied with a soft giggle and pinched his cheek. The way he was looking really could melt anyone's heart.

His eyes continued to emote surprise confusion at what was happening to them. She had called him cute. She thought he was cute. A sudden swell of pride filled his chest at her compliment and he quickly returned a compliment of his own, "You're really beautiful...especially your eyes." He saw her cheeks blush and her eyes shyly looking away. He placed the tip of his finger underneath her chin and turned her head back towards him. He gazed into her almond shaped eyes and added, "I could drown myself in your eyes." He smirked as he saw her cheeks redden even more. "You look even more beautiful when you blush." He chuckled as his hand was pushed away thoroughly enjoying this playfully moment they were having.

"So I guess this is our first date," Heer said in a cheery tone. "Wait, the movie was our first date...this would be our second date." She saw Prem smile making her feel at ease. "You didn't take advantage or rush last night. It was the way it was supposed to be." She looked on in amusement seeing her husband's cheeks flush pink for the first time.

"Um, okay," Prem timidly replied.

"So this is what it feels like to have Mr. Prem Juneja confess his feelings?"

Prem grinned at her teasing and how she was trying to lighten the moment. Both of them had been so tensed throughout the day that having this reaction was rather refreshing. "Yeah, my delivery was pretty bad in the beginning. It's been awhile...I'm a little rusty."

"Rusty? You were saying all these things and rambling," Heer chortled.

"Will I was nervous. It's not every day you tell your arranged wife who you considered as a friend that you want to be more than friends and you no longer consider this relationship arranged anymore...that you want to move forward in your life with her...to live the rest of your life taking care of her," Prem defended.

Heer looked at him in awe for the things he had just said to her. "Prem," she softly uttered. She leaned inward and kissed him again. When it naturally ended they rested their foreheads together. "I don't have an ideal husband but you're quickly becoming one for me."

Prem just smiled in return. He then arched his eyebrow in thought. "So if we're dating...does that mean I will have to sleep on the floor tonight?"

Heer laughed at his question but then tenderly cup his cheek, "I'll allow you to sleep next to me."

"Really?"

"Un-huh," she replied grinning affirmatively.

"You're very kind, but what if," brushing his nose against her nose, "I want to hold you while I sleep? I can sleep next to you but I may not be able to control myself from pulling you close to me and hug you in my sleep."

"Hmmm...I think your delivery is warming up," Heer commented. "Not so rusty anymore." Prem grinned and sweetly exchanged a kiss with her. They then smiled at each other. Their hearts felt light and there was this feeling of hope in the air for their future.

"You know I think we should have a toast," Prem said. He took a chicken nugget from his box and dipped the tip of it into the barbeque sauce and held it up towards Heer. She mimicked his actions and giggled as they touched their nuggets together for a toast. "To the future...to us."

"To the future...to us," Heer repeated. She then watched as Prem hooked his arm around hers bringing them closer together as he went to take a bite out of his chicken nugget. He was trying to do a lover's toast which was normally done with champagne. But since they didn't have champagne they were doing it with their chicken nuggets. Heer took a bite of her chicken nugget and felt shy at the way Prem was gazing at her. She unhooked her arm with his and started to concentrate on the rest of her food. Prem smirked at her reaction and took a sip of his drink. His wife was so cute when she was acting shy he thought to himself. He was going to have fun teasing her.

*******************************************************

Prem grinned mischievously as he rolled over and slipped his arm around Heer's waist scooting himself closer to her in bed. He nuzzled her ear and sighed happily. He felt her trying to move his hand away causing him to smirk, "I told you didn't I?"

"Did I forget to tell you that I need my space when I sleep?" Heer replied.

"Lair." Heer giggled and turned around so they were facing each other. Prem tenderly caressed her cheek with his hand and gazed into her eyes. They inched forward and sealed their lips together in a kiss. Heer heard the covers scrunch and felt the pressure of the bed changing as their bodies shifted while they prolonged their kiss. When the kissing ended she grinned at feeling Prem's body nestled on top of hers. He had a wicked smile on his face as he delicately brushed the tip of her nose with his nose. Heer rested one hand on the nape of his neck while the other causally rubbed his back. "Mmm..." he hummed as he softly gave her light kisses on her upper lip.

"Maybe you should sleep on the floor. It's only been two dates and you're already acting like this?" Heer playfully teased.

"Am I moving too fast?" Prem inquired with an edge of concern in his voice. He started to lift himself up when he felt Heer's arms wrap themselves around him telling him to stay.

"I was only joking," she giggled but slowly her facial expression changed as she contemplated something in her head.

"Heer, you okay?"

She looked at him and cautiously asked, "Am I being too easy with you?"

Prem's eyebrows flexed and he shook his head. "Why are you asking? I would never do anything without your permission. I don't want to pressure you into doing something you don't want to do. Do I make you feel uncomfortable?"

"No," Heer replied shaking her head. "You make me feel comfortable. I feel safe."

Prem smiled and then laid his head down. "We can go slow...take our time in this."

"It's been two years. How slow are we going?" Heer asked.

"So we shouldn't go slow?" Prem replied lifting his head up. "I guess I should ask...what happened last night...is that um, the norm?"

"How lucky do you expect to get Mr. Juneja?" Heer asked with her eyebrows raised. "You know you were extremely lucky...first date, first hug, first time holding hands, first kiss...you went through all the bases...complete homerun on the first try..."

"Yeah, didn't I?" Prem answered with a goofy grin spread across his face. He then looked at her and added, "But last night was really special. It was incredible. It was one of the best nights of my life. Not just because of what happened at the end...the whole night was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed spending time with you."

"I really enjoy spending time with you too," Heer replied with smile.

"So, the answer to my question is?"

"I'm not opposed to the idea...but don't expect it every night...you'll have to earn it," Heer answered.

"Earn it?"

"Yes. Things don't come for free," Heer explained making Prem chuckle.

"You're funny."

"I'm being serious," Heer stated.

"I know you are. But you're still funny and cute too," Prem grinned. "I have to earn brownie points won't I?"

"Something like that," Heer teased. "Oh, by the way...we will have to be careful...we'll need to lock the door from now on and teach Suraj to knock."

"You're right. I don't think I'm prepared to explain where babies come from just yet," Prem replied.

"Awww, but I'm sure you'll be great at it," Heer laughed.

"You think it's funny? You're the doctor...I'll just tell him to talk to you. Mama knows everything she's a doctor," Prem joked. She playfully slapped his shoulder making him furrow his eyebrows in protest. "That hurt," he whined.

"No it didn't."

"Think I would know if it hurt. And I'm telling you that it hurt. What are you going to do to make up for hurting me?" Prem pouted. "Huh?"

Heer had never seen this side of him before and she found herself giggling. "You're being silly and a wuss."

"You're laughing while I'm hurt? What kind of doctor are you? You're suppose to sympathize with the patient not make fun of them. You're supposed to feel my pain," Prem riled and rolled away.

Heer got a hold of her laughter and inched her way closer to him with an apologetic look. She placed her hand on his shoulder which was quickly shrugged away. "Prem," she called as she put her hand on his shoulder again. It was shrugged away like the first time. "Stop acting like a baby. Come here," she continued. "Let me see." Eventually Prem laid on his back but his head was turned in disinterest. Heer grinned and gently massaged where she had hit him on his shoulder. "Sorry..." she apologized in her sweetest voice and then bent down and placed a kiss on his shoulder. Prem glanced over feeling the heat of the kiss despite it being placed on his white undershirt. He made a faint mumble causing Heer to smile. Her plan was working. She inched closer to him and planted a light kiss on his chin, his jaw, and then his cheek. She pulled back and looked at him seeing if he was going to forgive her. She caught Prem's eyes as he briefly looked in her direction but then quickly turned away. "The doctor is trying but the patient isn't cooperating," Heer sighed.

"Try harder."

Heer moved closer to the point where she was practically on top of him. She playfully kissed his nose. "Forgive me?" His eyes shifted towards her direction and she quickly added, "Please?"

"May---" was all he was able to say as his lips were captured by his wife. Prem grinned as they kissed; thoroughly enjoying this interaction. When they parted he saw her smiling face causing him to smile in return. "More," he requested.

Heer obliged and kissed him again. She could feel his arms tightening around her making her entire body go weak with his affections. Eventually she pulled away breaking the kiss much to his protest. "So, when are you going to go see the doctor for your checkup?"

His eyebrows knitted in confusion. Only a few minutes ago they were making out and now suddenly she was inquiring about his health and when he was going to see the doctor? This made no sense. "What do you mean? I'm seeing a doctor right now," he answered smartly.

Heer rolled her eyes and sighed, "Be serious. Have you scheduled an appointment yet?"

"Be serious? I am being serious. I'm concentrating on kissing. I'm not multitasking like you...one side kissing and the other side thinking about a doctor's appointment?" Prem ranted. "I have my full concentration on you."

"Looks like I'll have to schedule the appointment for you," Heer replied not phased by his outburst.

"You can't be serious," Prem muttered.

"What's wrong in making sure my husband goes to his yearly checkup so he can stay healthy and strong and live a long life?" Heer questioned. Her voice was quivering and she was trying not to tear up in front of him. Prem's eyes went wide with panic. He had never seen her act like this before. His heart was hurting seeing her in pain like this. He didn't like it and he didn't like the fact that he had caused it.

"I'm sorry Heer." She ignored his words and buried her face in his shoulder softly crying. "I'm sorry," he repeated tenderly. "I'll go. I'll call first thing tomorrow morning." He rubbed her shoulder trying to sooth her. I promise. Now, please don't cry." His facial expression of concern soon turned into confusion when he heard laughing. "Heer?" She lifted her head snickering. "Heer..."

"Two can play that game," she answered with mischievous grin.

Prem shook his head and chuckled. "So, this is how it's going to be?" He laid his head down in defeat on the pillow.

"You're the one who started it. So there," Heer replied sticking her tongue out at him. This only made him chuckle some more. He then rubbed her back in a relaxing manner causing her to lay her head down on his chest. She let out a pleasing sigh and snuggled herself comfortably. Her eyelids blinked sleepily as the weariness of the day finally caught up to her.

Prem looked down and smiled seeing Heer curled up against him ready to sleep. He placed a tender kiss on her forehead and whispered, "Goodnight."

"Mmm...goodnight Prem," Heer mumbled as she closed her eyes. He watched her for a few minutes before his eyelids drooped unable to stay open any longer. He took comfort in the fact that when the morning came he would wake up beside her and see her smiling face. Tomorrow was another day; another day to spend time together and make new memories with each other.
