LA-based medical orthopedic surgeon, Sonu Ahluwalia, who cured celebs like Hrithik Roshan, Shakira and Brad Pitt, tells Divya Kaushik why he is part of a new TV show modelled after Dr Oz
It is not everyday that an LA-based doctor agrees to participate in mainstream Indian television, which is known the world over, for its over-the-top emotional content.
But Dr Sonu Ahluwalia did not think twice, when he was offered a role to host All Is Well on Colors.
The orthopedic surgeon and injury specialist, trained in Harvard Medical School, Boston has been away from India for many years. He thought the wellness programme to air tomorrow at noon, would introduce him to Indians and he could also demystify everything related to health and medicine.
Doing so, he could provide solutions relating, not only to diseases, but to leading stress-free lives. "There will be dance, drama and emotional bonding. I will interact with patients who faced trauma. And through real life incidents, we will clarify myths about health."
He explained further, "We plan to invite experts for different discussions. It will be a family programme, bringing on board familiar faces to help people connect. For example, Jagya and Gauri from Balika Vadhu will appear on an episode relating to miscarriage," informed Ahluwalia.
The show is based on the popular TV series, The Dr Oz Show. "However, the content here will be completely desi. There will be quizzes, games and power workouts," added Ahluwalia.
The doctor spent his childhood in Indore. After his graduation in medicine, he moved to Harvard. "I always believed that education has a big role in the development of a country and an individual. I wanted to give back to the country that made me what I am."
The medic went on, "As a doctor, I reach a maximum of around 100 patients a day. That does not create mass awareness and remove wideheld misconceptions. Hence this show.
"For instance, it is believed that in India, bahus are forced to eat ghee and rich food during pregnancy. They think it helps. But that's a myth. If we take this up, bahus can correct people who are forcing her to eat ghee, on medical grounds. So it is like empowerment with facts."
Dr Ahluwalia has cured Hrithik Roshan's knee injury. He has also treated various celebrities like Shakira and Brad Pitt.
He remarked, "The conversation between a doctor and patient always happens within closed rooms. Only they know the bond shared. For the first time, such conversations will be out in the open."
Talking about specific patients, he said, "There is an AIDS patient on one show. She tells us about the time when her son was not allowed to mix with other children when he went to school. My intention was to tell people that you don't get AIDS by touching people."
He added, "Hrithik Roshan's sister had cervical cancer. She talks about it on my show. Not many people in India know there is a vaccine for cervical cancer. Similarly, there are ladies who fought breast cancer and now live happy lives. Their stories will inspire women, even in small towns and villages, where TV has reach, but medical experts cannot interact with them," Ahluwalia said.
He is already famous as Munnabhai, thanks to the show's trailers. "I just hope I fit this space and manage to bring more smiles to Indian homes," he concluded.
