Chapter 3:
It was only a moment later she realized why he had drawn the gun. There was someone else in the alley. Maan leaned on her escaping from the sliver of light that was passing through the alley. Geet stood still as her face automatically got fit in the crook of his neck. She slowed her breathing and could feel that Maan was doing the same. She closed her eyes forgetting everything about the surrounding and concentrated on the soft sound of footfall. There was someone else in the alley and that person was walking towards them. The person, probably a man, was mostly twelve to fifteen feet away from them and he wasn't in a hurry. Given the stature of Maan, it could be someone who was waiting for an opportunity to kill him.
"Is that you sir?" A husky voice called out before either she or Maan could react.
She could feel the taut muscles of his body relax and he exhaled. Unconsciously she mimicked his actions, breathing down on his neck – literally. If he was relaxing, then it was probably someone he knew.
"Yes, it's me Khan," Maan replied and stepped away from her. "I thought my instructions were clear Khan – not to follow me," he added holstering the weapon and readjusting his jacket. His silhouette reflected the power he had in their world and it was something no one could ignore – especially not in the darkness.
When the whole world sleeps, our world starts to spin, she thought as she stepped away from the wall.
"There is a problem sir," Khan said escorting Maan out of the alley. The words came out in a frequency little above whisper but Geet, who was only two steps behind the two men, heard it clearly.
"What is it?" Maan asked walking as if he was taking a stroll in the park and talked about corrupt politicians with his friend.
Khan didn't respond but cleared his throat and nodded his head discreetly in Geet's direction.
"It's Geet, Khan. She isn't the kind who kisses and tells," he replied as he stepped out of the alley. The sudden incoming brightness from the street lamp blinded her for a moment making her shift and stand behind Maan – his shadow allowing her to see again in darkness and relieving her eyes.
"They are saying it's a Chinese rip off sir and aren't willing to pay the price we proposed," Khan replied without further ado. He purposefully dropped his voice by a notch or two. Geet swallowed a smile at the loyalty of the man.
"Is that so? Then let them be," Maan shrugged. "Are you waiting for something or someone?" He suddenly turned around and asked her. For the first time that night, she was completely taken off guard. He drew satisfaction at her expression and the sudden widening of her eyes.
She shook her head vigorously and slid out of the alley.
What would one say in a situation like this? Nice meeting you? I'll see you again? Let's keep in touch? She thought wondering if she should say anything at all.
"Stay out of trouble," Maan said and before she could formulate a response, he disappeared into the night. She let out a breath of relief that she didn't know she was holding and turned and ran. She didn't look back till she reached her home and stuck to moving in darkness and shadows of the main road. She didn't have the energy to venture another short cut through a dim lit alley. Once home she bolted the door behind her and collapsed on the floor. A thin layer of sweat covered her face and her heart beat loudly.
She knew that it wasn't because of the unplanned cardio workout she had had minutes before.
It was because of the man. He had managed to scare the hell out of her.
*******
"Why are you interested in that girl sir?" Khan asked walking alongside Maan.
"You saw the report Khan. Isn't it fascinating?" He replied throwing in a lopsided smile at his comrade. Khan knew Maan for a long time now and this was the first time he had seen him show a bit of interest in women. However he was disappointed a little when he came to know that the woman who had caught his eye was a bar dancer who had been talking to ACP Satya often. Khan personally didn't like the arrangement at all.
"You didn't answer my question sir," he said. He was older than Maan, sure, but in underworld, power drew respect and not age.
"She is hiding something Khan. Find out what it is," Maan said. The order was not lost on Khan and he didn't question it. If Maan wanted it done, then he would get it done. Their relationship was driven based on these transactions.
If either faltered, the other would lose life.
"What do you want me to do about the deal that may get cancelled?" Khan asked, ever polite.
"Let's go and say hello to them," Maan said baring his teeth. His pseudo smile wasn't cunning or reflected his wit.
It was the smile of a predator.

"ACP Satya is sniffing at our doorstep again."
Varun Deshmukh ignored those words and licked the white powder on a woman's naked torso. He threw his head back and drowned in the sensation. The words though he meant to ignore did somehow manage to register on his mind. It lessened the impact of the substance which made him unhappy.
"Why aren't we eliminating him?" He questioned calmly. The man who brought him the news looked at the heir of Deshmukh Empire in small wonder. Though completely stoned, he had managed to speak without a stutter or complete garbage.
"The repercussions would be devastating," the man replied.
"I want to go to Istanbul." Petulance was evident in his voice.
The man sighed.
"I need to buy something." Varun whispered in the man's ears. "I will buy weapons and armor from MSK there," he giggled in the end. The man turned pale. Varun was probably the biggest idiot alive, stoned or not, he thought. Doing business with MSK was simply out of question.
"Sir…" the man exclaimed, equally softly.
"Don't tell anyone; especially my father." Varun said as if he was telling a secret.
"Shhh….."
To be continued.
