Indian people and celebrities and Charity

While recently browsing through a gossip sight, there was a post about a certain celebrity's multi million rupees house and this question was raised by a commentator. It started this whole debate until one of them mentioned the comment section of a blog doesn't have enough space to debate. This led to this spark of idea in my brain.
Those who are interested can check out the original blog post.

************************************

Anywho here is the topic:

When it comes to publicity mongering there is no paucity of celeb appearances. For a bit of money they can appear anywhere and everywhere. BUt in a country where movie stars are looked upon as God, their supposed harrassment at certain airports create more furore than that of the ex -president of India, they can do a lot of work by being role models. Most of the Hollywood celebrities are active and vocal about the charity works they do, support them, raise money for them. However when it comes to India, our celebs are more busy to flaunt their designer dresses, their houses , their money than to advocate causes. These celebs rarely advocate charitable causes or speak out for them. Do you think they have a social obligation as highly worshipped living beings in India to deliver the correct messages, be the role model they are supposed to be. Which brings us, do you think they support or do charities or do anything remotely selfless?
This brings to my next question: Do you think the rich and the filthy rich of India do anything for any good cause or do considerable amount of charity. Do you think they are much too selfish or self centred to care?
This brings to next point, do you think we Indians or people of Indian origin, in general, are callous to plight of fellow human beings? Are we more interested to take care of ourselves and not even bother about the rest of the universe? if so is it an instrinsic behaviour of us desis or something acquired as a course of self preservation and survival over the years.
Lastly,Do you think religion has anything to do with this whole attitude?

Happy debating.

if the money from being human clothes really helps the poor, cancer patients then it's good...and i have seen Salman Khan mostly wear being human clothes..so do his brothers...so if it helps good...and in a way the t-shirts are priced cheap like 500rs or so so if somebody buying the t-shirt also supports it...
i don't kno wmuch about aishwariya's smile campaign or the bacchan school for girls...
now after Yuvraj Singh had cancer he wants to support the other patients...y wait till u suffer from it..

I think we as a people are cynical .. When celebs openly support some cause thn it is seen as a publicity stunt... so i guess if celebs and rich ppl do charity work, they sort of keep it to themselves...

and in my case cynicism transcends into private life.. I dont give to charities and stuff because i think most of them are frauds... so people like me tend to give money to established causes like Imran Khan's cancer hospital or the Edhi Foundation ...in the process some genuine causes do lose out ...

in times of disasters, people are united and contribute whatever they can... Be it floods or quake or tsunami ... I wish we wouldn't wait for disasters to give to charitable causes but ... somehow we are too programmed to think of our own selves first 😕 not sure if its a desi thing or an individual one

NO. How can they be role-model by giving charity? 😕 They give charities because they have money. 😃
Which brings us, do you think they support or do charities or do anything remotely selfless?

Come on, buying designer wear and buying beautiful condos and fullfilling one's desires isnt selfish. They worked hard to get so rich..and everyone wants designer clothes jwellery, beautiful houses, cars etc.. 😕 ..They arent obliged to charity work now are they 😕
This brings to next point, do you think we Indians or people of Indian origin, in general, are callous to plight of fellow human beings? Are we more interested to take care of ourselves and not even bother about the rest of the universe? if so is it an instrinsic behaviour of us desis or something acquired as a course of self preservation and survival over the years.
Charity work is totally personal to a person doing it. Some do it to show-off and some do it because they are really concerned about the poor/orphaned children/old-aged etc etc. Just because someone rich isnt giving charity, does not mean he selfish. It means cares about himself and his desires.. Besides, what one does with his money is his business, they shouldnt be judged like this.
Do you think religion has anything to do with this whole attitude?
Not at all. There are people of the same religion who do charity work and those who do not. Some do it to show-off, some do it from their heart.

The one and same, but i changed my username, the forums are full of creeps and trolls. and my name is quite easy to find.

I brought religion because someone in the link posted by argued, christians and muslims are bound by their religious edicts to do some charity. Its a part of their duty and because there is no such hard bound rules for Hindus, we often do not bother. I personally feel its totally dependant on the individual what to do and religion plays no role in it.
You made this topic? Good topic :)
I agree with the last part.

I made this topic here, but this was actually discussed in replies to some blog post, the link i provided in my opening post. If you see it, someone will bring the religion angle and although i whole heartedly disagreed to what that person has to say, it was interesting to read this angle

Thanks for liking the topic, i found my topics had no takers 😆
