Part 15:
As Arnav reached home that night, laughter welcomed him. Amidst the numerous laughs of his family, he heard his most favorite laugh, which spread warmth in his chest. He followed the sound of it in a daze, as if that laughter called out for him, and he found all the women in his life sitting around a mountain of sarees. Apparently, it was the Saree selection going on. Probably for tomorrow's pooja, he thought, and was thinking of a way to step out of this pooja mess, when Khushi looked up at him.
She smiled at him, and Anjali, on noticing that Khushi had suddenly fallen silent, looked up at her, and followed her line of sight to find her brother standing there, the minutest of smiles adorning his lips. "Chotey!! You tell Khushi! She wants to wear this simple saree for tomorrow's pooja! This is so simple!! And I'm telling to her to wear this!" Anjali said, as she held up two sarees, one in each of her hand. Arnav lazily sauntered to his Di, and looked at both the sarees. The one that Khushi seemed to like was a plain chiffon one, blood red in color, and having no designs, nothing. The one his Di wanted her to wear was a blue one, filled with so much grandeur. He was sure Khushi would look like a queen with that one. Especially since he had seen her in that sequined blue dress just a day ago. But his favorite color on her would be red. Plus the red saree looked so soft. He pointedly looked at the saree, running the tip of his index finger on it, and then at Khushi, and left the room without a word. Plus Khushi looked her best with simplicity.
Khushi had been observing his actions, and the moment he looked at the red saree, and ran a finger on it, she had known that was his choice. She smiled to herself, and then grinned victoriously at Anjali as she picked the red saree from her hand and left for her room, an extra spring in her step, making Anjali smile at her naivety.
The next morning, Khushi woke up at the time Anjali had asked her to, and helped her with almost all the arrangements. Arnav woke up at his usual time and headed down for a cup of coffee when he saw her first, arranging the flowers around the agni kund. The sacred fire hadn't been started yet, as the pooja hadn't yet started. She had worn a sleeveless blouse matching the red saree, and she had fixed the pallu of her saree at her waist, so that it didn't fall off her shoulder. Her hair was braided in a single plait, and it fell on her chest. But the way her hands were working now, gave a teasing peek of her cleavage, and Arnav raised his eyes at the sight welcoming him. She turned around now, and proceeded with her task, and Arnav groaned to himself, as she sashayed her bottom to him. The soft chiffon, as he had expected, snuggled to all her curves enticingly. Too enticing, for his comfort! Unwillingly his eyes roamed to her bottom, and he sighed longingly. 'This was going to be tough. Very tough', he thought.
Majority of the arrangements had been done. She hadn't let Anjali work at all, as she made Anjali sit down and tell her the things, and having quite a lot of experience in all this, Khushi expertly finished the tasks. Anjali had gone to freshen up, and Khushi started the not-so-important task of decorating the central fireplace where the ritual would start in a while. She frowned as she felt very conscious all of a sudden, as if somebody were staring at her unblinkingly. She looked behind to see Arnav standing at the bottom of the stairs, watching her. . . . Is he really staring at my butt?!
Khushi stood up in one fluid movement. Arnav's eyes lifted to hers, which looked a little defiant for a moment. But as his eyes started appraising her appearance, she felt heat spread through her veins, and made her blush very hard. She saw his eyes linger for more than necessary at her chest, her waist, where her skin stood out in contrast when compared to her saree, and her hips, and then leisurely made his way back to her eyes, giving a look which told her that he liked what he saw.
"I want coffee." Arnav murmured to her, amused at the way she stood looking at her feet.
Khushi's first reaction when she saw him staring at her was to cover her waist properly, and she did it as soon as her befuddled brain seemed to have gained certain sense back. But his eyes held such a hunger, such a carnal hunger that she felt a chill spread along her spine. She had never been on the receiving end of such a stare. At least not of any that she knew.
And being new to such an experience made her follow her primal instinct.
RUN.
Khushi nodded minutely and went to the kitchen, as Arnav made his way back to his room, not really wanting to take part in anything related to the pooja. And he was sure if his sister saw him, she would come up with anything which would require his help. He now patiently waited in his room, flitting through the news channels on his TV, impatiently waiting for Khushi to come up with his coffee.
He looked on as the door opened, and in came an oblivious Jaiprakash.
"Khushi kaha hai?" Arnav asked him, and Jaiprakash replied, "Woh. . . Neeche. . . Kitchen main kaam. . . ." Arnav nodded and dismissed him. What the hell is all this about!! he thought as he downed his coffee in a few sips, not minding the scalding hot drink. He showered, and got ready and had just turned on his laptop, when he heard his Di calling him from downstairs. He went down as soon as possible, wanting to avoid her climbing the stairs.
Anjali gasped as she saw him, and asked, "Why are you dressed like this? Aaj tho kurta pajama pehen lete??!!" His eyes had involuntarily gone to Khushi, who stood beside his sister, and still refused to look at him. He felt more irritated than ever, as he snapped at his sister, "Di, please! You know I don't believe in such things!" And he didn't even give an opportunity for his sister to object as he turned back on his feet, and left.
Anjali knew Chotey hated all this, but he usually complied to at least keep her smile intact on her face! What was different today? "Did you two fight?!" She asked as she stared surprisedly at her brother's retreating back.
Khushi's eyes widened, as she realized the reason behind Arnav's irritation. She had been avoiding him, and as much as she loved the fact that Arnav had started understanding her well too, she hated it right now. Maybe he had understood from her actions since this morning, that she had been avoiding him. But Khushi masked all that with a roll of her eyes for Anjali's sake. She didn't know why, she didn't feel like sharing this whole "understanding" between her and Arnav, with anybody. She hadn't told this to her jiji too!
No breakfast was served before the pooja, as fasting was required, and the pooja was finished by 11.30. So they all decided to have a heavy brunch, and Anjali asked Khushi to fetch Arnav. Khushi got tensed at this. She knew the sudden change in his behavior because of her saree. Her red saree! His favorite color, since he had himself chosen it for her. "I'll change, and then call him, Di!" Khushi replied, and Anjali's eyebrows furrowed in puzzlement, as she inquired, "Why?? You look fine in this saree. Just go and call him down, and lets eat! I'm starving!!"
"But. . . ." Khushi started to explain, and Anjali clucked her tongue impatiently. "Gooo!!" she exclaimed, adding a little of the stern, big-sister attitude to her order. Khushi doubtfully took a few steps towards the steps, and turned back to look at Anjali once more, who in turn jerked her head to indicate to indicate she should go ahead. Anjali failed to fathom why Khushi was behaving like this, all of a sudden. May be they have fought! she thought and shrugged to herself. And her attention was then captured by her husband who came to sit next to her, inquiring about food.
As she stood outside the door to Arnav's room, Khushi put a hand to her heart, trying to calm her racing heart, and failed so miserably. She knew she soon had to face him, and she knocked his door before she entered it. She stood with her gaze fixed at a point on the lush gray rug which felt heavenly under her bare feet, and waited for him to make any kind of a move.
Arnav looked up, as he saw her enter his room. Her eyes were still downcast, fueling his irritation a notch, and he saw her stand at the door, ready to bolt at any move of his. "What do you want?" He muttered as he forced his gaze to return to his laptop screen. Khushi inwardly flinched at his cold voice. It seemed like ages since she had heard his usually warm voice, which was reserved just for her. When had things changed to this extent?! Khushi wondered, as she stuttered a reply, "Woh. . . Anj. . . Di is calling you. . . downstairs, for food. . ."
"I'll pass." Arnav said nonchalantly. Khushi immediately looked at him, gazing at his laptop. He had not had anything except the coffee that morning. It was bad for his blood sugar levels. And when she started explaining this to him, he stood up from the recliner and covered the distance in between them in two long strides, and he held her shoulders in a vice-like grip. Khushi, shocked at this move, looked at his hands on her shoulders, and then at his livid face, which did nothing in helping her easing her apprehension. "How dare you avoid me!" He whispered through gritted teeth, making Khushi look down with guilt.
"I wasn't. . . ." Khushi started to lie, when he crushed her in his embrace, pulling her so close, that there was not even a breath's distance between them. His nose skimmed her neck, taking in her jasmine like scent along with her very own, before he put his mouth near her ear, as he murmured in a husky, velvety voice, "Don't. Ever. Avoid. Me, Khushi" And if the warning that had been spelled out for her wasn't enough to unnerve her, the way he murmured her name in the end made her shudder with anticipation, making him smirk proudly. His one hand was at the small of her back, holding her in place, against him. Whilst the other was just below the nape of her neck. Now his fingers, traced the bare skin exposed by her blouse, and then started moving along her backbone.
His finger ran along her spine in a tantalizing movement, making Khushi shiver with anticipation. She held onto his shoulder, and his eyes never left her face, gaging her each reaction. His hands were now at her waist, dangerously running lower towards her hips.
Her breathing had started becoming uneven at his embrace, and her eyes had closed when he had warned her not to avoid him, ever again. And now she fluttered them open, and the 'Come hither' look in her eyes made Arnav lose the last shreds of sanity, as he bent to claim her lips.
No precap!!! Mwahahahahahahahaha!!! 😈
