Chapter two::

The two young and beautiful girls Got their first view of the city of dreams.Chandni's dream of finally leaving the old city of jalandhar behind her were finally fulfilled and here she was setting foot in a new reality along with her best friend Radha.
As they stepped out of the station they were distracted by the constant traffic moving around, the noise of the people and blare of the horns.

Heading to the strict instructions of their Bauji, Chandni looked around in hopes of a PCO where she would be able to call him to inform of her safe arrival. Finding one quite close by, she rushed forward.
"Hello,UncleJi mein Rahdha Bol rahi hu.Hum Mumbai pohoch gaye hai. Ji koi dikkat nahi hui....ap bas hame woh address de dijiye.hum sahi salamat phoch jayenge."Radha quickly took down the address of the place where they had made arrangements to stay. "Ji shukriya.Kisi cheez ki zaroorat padi to hum apko zaroor phone karenge"

Relieved after speaking to her father, Chandni looks around in hopes of an auto to hop off into. Hailing one was more easy than she had anticipated when three came and stood in front of her. Quickly walking to one, she told him the address to the place and was rudely informed that none of the auto's would go there since it was a taxi dominated area.

Shocked and slightly confused she asked a taxi wala for a ride, but sensing something wrong with him, she decided they'd be safer walking there. What she hadn't anticipated was the constant auto's stopping by to check them for potential clients and the blare of horns even in the most empty galli's.

Finally after a walk of about half hour, they reached their destination. Rustamji batliwala colony was a typical chawl with clothes hanging out and people waiting in lines for the water. Slightly upset with the look of the place, Radha looked skeptically at Chandni and found her grinning from ear to ear.

"We're going to stay in a chawl!"

Radha shook her head amused. Looking around for the female who had ensured they had a roof over their head, Radha took in her surroundings. The people of Mumbai seemed acutely happy in whatever situation they were in. It was as if they had learned to mask their discomfort of odd surroundings and live happily in whatever little place they had.

"What about the keys?" she asked Chandni. Turning she found Chandni already on her way to a house. Squinting hard, she saw the name Godbole on the door and heaved a sigh of relief. Finally.

As they knocked on the door a rather large woman in a typically maharashtrian saree opened the door. Her face was twisted in a odd expression as if they were asking a lot of her by just knocking on the door.

"Kaye pahije?"she asked gruffly, clearing her throat. Chandni quickly explained her situation and a look of recognition came over godbole's face. Quickly opening the door she beckoned them in. "Main ek dubba business chalati hoon. Yeh time hai na, meri chutti hai, toh main jara do teen ankh maar rahi thi," said Mrs Godbole.

Radha laughed loudly and seeing the confusion on Chandni's face, Mrs Godbole also started laughing. "Mhenje, So rahi thi".

Chandn n Radha felt wonderful and widout hesitation they ate whatever mrs Godbole put before them. They were overwhelmed to see the khatirdaari done by Mrs.Godbole.

Quickly helping them with their luggage Mr Godbole took them to their small little flat next door. Mrs.Godbole unlocked the door to the house and the girls found themselves in a small apartment with a single room accompanied by a separation that led to a kitchen. The bathroom was a small square at the extreme back of the house.

Radha opened her mouth to exclaim at the lack of any living space, But chandni caught her hand, warning her in advance.

Smiling, Chandni looked around at the single two beds with very thin quilts spread out over them and the steel cupboard that dominated one wall. The paint was peeling after years of damage by the rains and the room smelt distinctly of onion. Nodding her head in understanding, Radha turned to Mrs Godbole and said , "Apka bahot bahot shukriya."

Mrs Godbole waved off their thanks and left, yawning on her way out.

Grumbling loudly, Radha looked upset as she said "Aare ye kya yaar….hum yaha rahenge."

Chandni shook her head in regret and said patiently "What were you expecting. Yeh ek chawl hai, yahan tumhe Taj hotel jaisa room to nahin milega meri shehjaadi. Get used to living here. Besdies, ek bar humare paas thode paise aa jaynege toh we'll shift to a better place".

Radha nodded though looking a bit unsatisfied. She started going through a newspaper they had got from Mrs.Godbole while Chandn is busied herself with unpacking. The time passed quickly and both girls got busy clearing the smell of onion from the room. While doing so Radha learned the importance of a dustbin in their room while Chandni met her first cockroach of Mumbai. All in all, it was an interesting evening. Retiring after a dinner of jalandhar ke cold paratha's both girls slept with big dreams in their eyes.

Next Morning Chandni got up with a start. Unused to the absolute darkness around her, it takes her time to get used to it. Looking at the glowing watch resting on her hand she determines that's 5:30 in the morning. A irritating noise reaches her and turning her head she realizes its Radha snoring away to glory. Smiling softly, she gets up to headed towards the balcony.
Taking a deep breath on the balcony , Chandni looked around and noticed that Mumbai looked almost eternal in the morning.

Untouched, and almost beautiful. As music reached her ears, Chandni strained her ears and picked up the notes of a song. "Aye dil hai mushkil jeena yahaan, zara hatke zara bachke, yeh hai Mumbai meri haan". Smiling faintly, she moved back into the house and rushed to have a bath and get freshened up.
Chandn is gets dressed and comes out of the bathroom to see that Radha hasn't even awakened. "Ye kya,tum nahi chal rahi ho?"

Radha opened her eyes, and shook her head faintly. Squinting at the wrist watch on her right hand, she noted the seven number glowing softly. Shaking her head again she said softly. "Meri tabiyat theek nahin hai. Aur waise bhi, main tumhare saath aakar kya karungi. Tum jao, main aaj yaheen rahungi".
Chandni nodded her understanding and left.

>>>>>Interviews

Chandn rushed hastily towards the station. She was astonished to see a crowded train without even little place for her to stand. Pushing two fat ladies who were hanging onto the railings for dear life. Chandniu managed to squeeze in. Although once in, she didn't know whether she had made the right decision or not. Because even though being in helped her not fall off, it also made it impossible for her to determine what station was approaching.

Undecisively standing for half hour, she finally managed to get close enough to the door to know when Bandra arrived and she could climb down. Exiting the station, she headed for the clothes shop where she was being interviewed for the job of a salesgirl.

Upon arriving at the office, Chandni quickly scanned the place for prospective competition. When she didn't see any interviewee around, she asked a peon passing by where the interviews were being held. Looking at her up and down , the peon gave a small whistle. Shocked, Chandni moved away from him. Thankfully, a passing by female directed her to another floor where the interview was taking place.

As she entered the office area of the branch, she realized that she wasn't the only female in need of a job. Crowded around her were atleast another fifteen girls all dressed to perfection their hair in place. Chandni studied her own reflection in her compact mirror and winced. She looked as if she had been through a tornado. Her hair was all over the place, and her pristeen white salwar suit, which was the only white outfit with her, looked like it had seen much much better days. Concious of all the business suits around her, she gave up hopes of bagging the job. And when a lady came out and said at the end of her second hour of waiting that the vacancy had been filled, Chandni hopeless ducked into the ladies room putting her hair atleast in order.

It was too late to go home and change into her jeans as it is, so she moved onto her next interview.
This time her journey was much better and quite satisfying as Chandni had her first morsel of food, the vada pav. Undeniably delicious, Chandni regretted not buying another for Radha to try.

She supposed the stars were happy with her as this time there weren't as many people around her looking for the same job. Looking around at the bunch of people all vying for a job with the chain of shoe shops, Chandni felt confident. If there was something she knew, it was shoes.

Placing her aching backside on a seat, she turned to the girl next to her. "Hi!"

The girl turned around and gave her a smile. Quickly entering into an interesting conversation with her , Chandni completely forgot about the time and before long she heard a male voice call out "Chandni Kapoor".
Noticing for the first time that an hour has again passed her by, she nodded to the girl next to her and moved to face her interview.

"Miss Chandni Kapoor ?"

Chandni nodded quickly and sat where she was instructed. Ten minuites passed in a haze as the man fired question after question. Apparenly satisfied, he asked her to leave her address at the reception. Happy with her interview, Chandni left the office.

Relieved Chandn comes out n is surprised not to see the girl wid whom she had been talking 4 so long.Chandn looks out 4 the sign of tht girl but to no success she leaves the office thinking it was really foolish of her not asking tht girl her name. But she is satisfied n kinda hopeful.

Animatedly relaying the events of the day to Radha, Chandni quickly shared the vada pav's she had wrapped on the station with Radha. The two of them quickly gobled up a handful, listening to the transistor which Radha said belonged to Mrs Godbole.

Done with her share of talking for the evening, a still weak Radha quickly went to bed and soon after the air filled with her snoring. Slightly irritated, Chandni plugged in the transistor and curled up on her bed. Delighted to hear the song of her favourite musician Himesh Reshamya, Chandni tapped her foot to the softly playing song.

Replaying the day in her head, she smiled. 'what a day!'

AS the clock struck ten, the music suddenly stopped and a clear voice filled the room. "Waqt ho chukka hai dus baj kar do minute aur Mein hu aapke saath apki ladki deewani AMY sirf India Calling 99.5 FM par.aane wale teen ghante mein aapke saath rahungi. To filaah aap ye do gaane enjoy kijiye aur hum phir se milenge bahut saari baaten karne aur bahut saare gane sune. Kahin jayige nahi"

Excited at hearing a familiar voice on the radio, Chandni quickly exclaimed in delight. Listening to the rhythmic music pelted by the transistor, she fell asleep, unaware of what the future was going to bring for her.
