Om Namah Shivaya!
Heya everyone! 😃..Today is a great day..its Maha Shivratri! and we CCs had the brilliant idea of explaining to you the reason we celebrate this festival and the significance of it but before starting..We CCs wish you a very happy Maha Shivratri!
Maha Shivratri is a Hindu festival celebrated every year on the 13th night/14th day of the Maagha or Phalguna month of Hindu Calendar in the honour of Lord Shiva. The festival is principally celebrated by offerings of Bael leaves to Lord Shiva, all day strict fasting and an all night long vigil with many people having only fruits and milk and some not even consuming water.
The devotees sincerely worship Lord Shiva, on the auspicious day, as it is believed it releases a person of his sins and also liberates him from the cycle of birth and death. For unmarried woman, Lord Shiva is regarded as the ideal husband so they pray for a husband like Him, on Shivaratri. On the other hand, married women pray for the well being of their husbands.
There are many myths surrounding why we celebrate Maha Shivratri. One of the most believed reason is that Shivaratri is the wedding day of Lord Shiva and Parvati. It is also believed that Lord Shiva performed 'Tandava', the dance of the primal creation, preservation and destruction on this auspicious night of Shivaratri. According to another popular legend, described in Linga Purana, it was on Shivaratri that Lord Shiva manifested himself in the form of a Linga for the first time.
Another myth is that after creation was complete, Parvati asked Lord Shiva which devotees and rituals pleased him the most. The Lord replied that the 13th night of the new moon, during the month of Maagha, is his most favourite day. Parvati repeated these words to her friends, from whom the word spread over all creation.Since then, the day is considered to be extremely auspicious by the devotees of Shiva and they celebrate it as Maha Shivaratri also known as the grand night of Shiva.
Devotees bathe at sunrise, preferably in the Ganga, or any other holy water source. This is known as a purificatory rite. Wearing a clean piece of clothing after the holy bath, worshippers carry pots of water to the temple to bathe the Shivalinga. They offer prayers to the sun, Vishnu and Shiva.
According to the Shiva Purana, the Mahashivaratri worship also known as the Chaar pahar ki pooja(4 levels of pooja) must incorporate six items: Bathing the Shiv Linga with water, milk and honey, and Wood apple or bel leaves added to it, representing purification of the soul.
So here was some info about the festival..Till we meet again guys! Wish you all a very pious Maha Shivratri! 🤗🤗..
