FICTION CHARACTERS WHO TOPPED THE POPULARITY CHARTS
The results of this section have been compiled using the
findings of our quarterly syndicated study Characters India
Loves (CIL). More than 19,000 Hindi GEC viewers are
asked to name their favorite television character. The
audience profile was 15-44 years, SEC ABC, across
Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Indore & Jalandhar.
The gender skew was 2:1 in favor of females. The sample is
divided into fiction & non-fiction preferers, basis their
choice. Only the fiction preferers have been considered for
this section.
For programs not on-air for the entire duration of 2011,
shares have been normalized for time, so that an old
program does not have an unfair advantage. However, only
the programs that have been on-air for at least eight weeks
in 2011 have been considered.
However, once we look beyond these two programs, it's a
Star Plus show all the way. The channel has four different
characters, from four different shows, in the top 10. It is the
only channel that has representation from more than one
program in the top 10. Gopi is @No. 6 with 5.3 score.
Bade Achhe Lagte Hain creates an impact on this
parameter too, holding two of the top four positions,
including its lead male protagonist Ram Kapoor on the no. 1
position. Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (SAB TV) is
the only other program with two characters in the top 10.
Colors has its flagship character Anandi at the no. 3 spot,
but the absence of any other character from Colors in the
top 10 list is noticeable. Popular characters such as Ichha,
Tapasya and Ammaji moved out of top 10 this year, and the
newer lot on the channel has not managed to replace them.
Zee TV, too, faces a similar concern. Their only representation in the top 10 is Archana from Pavitra Rishta.
Manav from the same show narrowly misses out on the top
10 list. However, no other character from Zee TV creates a
significant impact.
In 2012, there's a lot of catching up Star Plus' competition
has to do. And even more so, because this year, they will
have an additional competitor in Life OK!
