Different Peculiarities

A thought for an idle Sunday. Have you noticed the unique application and usage of the good language varying and exposed according to the geography of its user/ writer.

Take my limited examples:

Open hair is not a description I am familiar with, free flowing hair, untied hair or loose hair is much more common.

Cut the phone being another example, disconnect the phone, ended the call or call terminated the call is familiar speech to me.

Here are my favorites
1. Rubber (in India it means an eraser and in US it means cond*m)
2. Hung up the call vs. Put the phone down
3. Pass out vs. Graduated (In US pass out means you fainted)
4. ASR's own "Are you liking the function" (his dialog during sangeeth) vs what I would have said "Are you enjoying the party?"

It is mostly becuase we Indians who are educated in India and most of time speak our mother tongue somehow translate the indian phrase directly to english.

Phew Smitri took a load off my mind as we have clarified that, was getting a little anxious in case someone took offence.

I had a funny experience early on in US.

One of my friends took a strong offense to her interviewer when the latter left her a message "Hi So-and-So, I am calling to touch base with you"

My friend did not like the phrase and said it felt lewd and obscene.

I had to explain to her that its a reference to the game of baseball, when you touch a base, you make contact and land in your destination.

BTW, did you guys catch the very very very sexy "I don't know" spoken by ASR in the kitchen when he corners khushi to ask her about her concerned voice mail.

He kind of rolled out the "I dont know" with an ease can american would say, arrogant, dismissive and yet fully assured. I replayed that tidbit like hundred times and tried to imitate him. 😆

Yes I have noticed that American women don't like to be addressed as ma'am or madame whereas in the UK its very acceptable.
