how often does puranmasi raat come?

Hi All

I am just curious to know how often does that special Puran masi raat comes in a year? I mean Anu was already 2 months pregnant at the last puran masi when she tied a thread to the Pipal tree with Nikhil. If this night comes oncein a year, then Anu should have had a baby by now! :-)

pooranmaasi, if i'm not wrong, would come every month...literally, completion of a month would be pooranmaasi. i'm guessing.

yeah I thought too that full moon night comes every month, but then Vidya who wrote the update mentioned that it's perticular marathi festival of vrat savitri..so i wondered..

yea it comes every month some people call it poonam and others purnima...but i'm guessing it comes every month and means the full moon...well it takes 15 days for a moon to complete it's cycle...so i guess that many 😕 😃

Hey Chiwu, I thought puranmaashi and Vrat Savitri are the same coz in both the festivals, you tie the sacred thread around the pipal tree. Whereas vat savitri comes once in a year, puranmaashi (full moon day) comes once in a month.

But you know what, when Anu saw the calendar, both these festivals were mentioned for that particular date so i assumed they are one and the same. sorry for the confusion dear.

Poornima occurs once every lunar month which lasts 29.5 earth days. This is also known as the synodic month. The moon itself takes 27.3 days to rotate around the earth - also called the sidereal month - wherein it passes thru all the 27 nakshatras (lunar asterisms) spending one night in each nakshatra. (Also known as the 27 wives of the Moon). Since the synodic progression and the sidereal rotation take roughly the same time (27.3/29.5 days) The moon always has the same hemisphere facing the earth. The other side is called "The dark side of the Moon"........Pink Floyd named their album based on this!!
