Copycat?
Khayali Saharan

This joke appears to be no laughing matter.

Shailesh Lodha, who anchors Wah Wah, the hasya kavi sammelan on SAB, claims that Khayali Saharan, one of the finalists of Star One's The Great Indian Laughter Challenge — Dwitya, has stolen his jokes.

Risky affair

Lodha, who combines poetry with his comedy shows and stand-up acts, says that in the first round of the contest, Khayali had mouthed his well-known joke, Risk Kaun Le?

"I did not see the particular episode as I was away doing stage shows in Australia," says Lodha.

"But immediately after the telecast, I was flooded with calls from friends and fans saying that a participant of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge was mouthing your lines. I was taken by surprise as Risk Kaun Le? is a well-known line of mine. I have been performing it for years. It was like a chorus line after every joke of mine.

In fact the audience would mouth it in unison with me at shows. Risk Kaun Le? is my trademark line just as Navin Prabhakar (a contestant of Laughter Challenge's first season) has Pehchaan Kaun to his credit.

Khayali's denial

Lodha further claims that he happened to meet Khayali at a stage show at Chennai recently, and quizzed him about it. "But Khayali denied that he had mouthed the same jokes. On further asking him, he admitted that he had attended my show in Ganganagar, Rajasthan, and had heard me perform Risk Kaun Le some years ago. So, I am sure he is aware of it."

'It's ridiculous'

Khayali, who is currently shooting for the The Laughter Challenge, says, "How can Shailesh Lodha say this? He is my senior and I respect him. I have a lot to learn from him and seek inspiration from him."
In his viewpoint, Lodha is wrong in saying that I am stealing his funny lines.

"I did say Risk Kaun Le? in the first episode but the jokes were all distinct from Lodha's. Moreover, I heard this line in a radio show long time back. A common line in a joke does not mean that I am stealing his work," points out Lodha. If that is the yardstick, then all this while we have been bombarded by music-based contests on television.

All these people are singing someone else's songs, so can the original singer say they are singing my songs and winning titles? It is a bit ridiculous to even say this."

Regional bonding

Interestingly, both Lodha and Khayali are originally from Rajasthan. "I come from a small village in Rajasthan. I later shifted to Chandigarh and am now based in Mumbai. It is due to my hard work and efforts that I have reached this juncture," says Khayali, who is also slated to feature on the big screen in Sunil Babbar's Red Zone and Iqbal Sattar's Mein Tere Ashiq Main. "I will be doing my comic acts in both the films."

Lodha, on the other hand is from Jodhpur and besides Wah Wahm regularly performs all over the globe. Along with his wife, Swati, he has also written several books on life including Get Set Go.

So does Lodha plan to sue Khayali? "In our country there is no intellectual copyright. But it is wrong for Khayali to do it. He may have been selected for the semi-final round because of Risk Kaun Le? And that's not right."

even i agree. And i dont think jokes are anybodys personal property. Most of the jokes that we hear in the shows are already heard. Its just the presentation style, body language, timing which makes one laughs. In my viewpoint Khayali is the best.

well if he is the best then why does he have to look at someone eles' jokes to come up with his material? I agree that there are no copyrights on these jokes but the real champion shouldn't depend on others material. just like sunil paal and raju shrivastav he should be able to come up with his own material. I am not saying he is the only one who has done this. I have heard many jokes in TGILC that I have heard before but I think one should come up with his material if he wants be called the best.
