Lara's musical connection

Music to my eyes: Lara Dutta.

If you see Lara Dutta engrossed with her iPod and humming tunes, chances are she could be listening to a radical composition by British Asian artist Nitin Sawhney. Interestingly, Lara Dutta and Nitin Sawhney are cousins.

Although the two met occasionally during their growing years, they bond well and even critically appreciate each other's work. Says Dutta, "Yes, Nitin and I are cousins. Like all Punjabi families we are quite close to each other."

Movies and music

42-year-old Sawhney was born in Britain a year after his parents migrated there from Punjab. He began piano lessons at the tender age of five, then classical and flamenco guitar followed. He used to play sitar and tabla at a local Sikh temple.

While he went on to compose soundtracks for movies, television shows and collaborate with bigwigs including Sinead O'Connor, Sir Paul McCartney, Sting, Cheb Mami, Jos Miguel Carmona and The English Chamber Orchestra, Dutta struggled to make a foothold in the film industry.

Ask Dutta about her childhood memories, and she says, "Nitin grew up in England whereas I grew up in India. But I simply love his music and I have heard all his albums."

Apart from performing artists the only common thing that the duo share is a passion for acting. Sawhney is known to have scripted and acted in the comedy series Goodness Gracious Me. She further adds, "In the same way, Nitin has seen all my films so far."

Sawhney and Dutta have had their share of social work, too, around the world. Dutta had visited many impoverished countries in capacity of a former Miss Universe. Sawhney has tried to bridge racial discrimination through his music and had interviewed Nelson Mandela for his 2001 album Prophecy.

Lara in London

After her stint as a hostess for the recently concluded IIFA awards at Dubai, Dutta is heading for London as a part of the outdoor schedule for Priyadarshan's Bhagaam Bhaag.

Talking about the film she says, "Attempting a comedy has always been fun and when it comes to Priyan it gets hilarious. I'm leaving for a 30-day schedule and I'm super- busy packing my bags and making other arrangements."
