THINKING OF YOU

Lights were glittering, creating day within the night. Music blazed and people swayed as if hypnotised by its rhythm.

Geet couldn't keep the smile off her face, as she saw her best friend Meera look ecstatic. It was Meera's birthday and she had thrown a massive surprise party for her with the help of Meera's parents.

Everyone was on the dance floor, enjoying the night but Geet was standing by herself. It wasn't that she didn't enjoy dancing but she didn't like dancing in front of people. So instead she observed everyone.

It took awhile for her to realise that there were a pair of eyes trained on her. She saw him across the room, mimicking her stance by leaning against the wall. Even as her eyes met his, he was unapologetically stared back at her.

She felt a blush spread across her cheeks but for some unknown reason she couldn't look away. Connected by an invisible thread of awareness, both were caught up in each other.

"Geet!" Cynthia, one of her friends screamed into her ear. "What are you doing standing by yourself?" Geet quickly turned away from the man but Cynthia had seen her staring at someone. "Oh my god! Geet is staring at someone?" She was all excited because Geet was never the type to show interest in strangers.

"No!" Geet tried to argue.

"What's going on?" Meera came up to the pair. "Cynthia why are you screaming?"

"Because our darling Geet is becoming a woman." She laughed. "She was openly checking out one of the guys here."

"Who?" Meera asked, filled with curiosity.

"There!" Cynthia pointed to the guy who had now turned around. But Meera had no trouble recognising him.

"Maan bhai!" Meera gasped. "Geet you were checking out my cousin."

"No I wasn't" Geet protested but it fell on deaf ears.

"Why didn't I think of this before, you two will make the perfect couple!" Meera exclaimed. "I'll have to set you two up."

"Meera, you know I don't date." This time Geet's voice was stern. "My parents would never allow it and I won't do that to them."

Meera sighed, knowing that Geet was implacable about this issue. "Fine."

Geet had managed to convince her friends about him but it was more difficult convincing herself. The whole night she could feel his eyes on her and it took herculean effort not to stare at him. She stole some secretive glances but mostly managed to stay away.

It was only right at the end of the party while she was packing up that things were difficult to avoid. She was just lifting up a box of plates when someone effortlessly picked it up for her. Turning to face the kind person, she was speechless to see that it was the stranger, Maan.

"Hi." His deep baritone voice was like hot chocolate drizzling down her throat. "I am Maan, Meera's cousin."

Geet quickly looked away and mumbled. "Thanks."

And then she ran away, with only a glance at the man who kept staring at her.

-----------------------------------------

The sound of her alarms forced her to wake up, bringing her back from her dreams. For a few moments she tried to hold onto the images that still lingered, wanting to live in the beautiful fantasy that was once her reality but now just a memory.

It was the one memory that she could never forget and wouldn't want to forget. Her eyes filled with tears as she remembered that special night when they had first met. Obviously back then she had no idea that her whole life would change and that he would be the catalyst for that change.

She had thought that she would have never met that man again but fate had something else in store. She smiled as she thought of the subsequent meetings.

-----------------------------------

No matter where she would go, he would be there. Every time she went to the university library he would be there. She would walk to the market and his car would be parked their on the sidewalk. At Meera's house he had become a permanent fixture.

He would try to speak to her but somehow she would avoid the conversation. Still she started to find out things about him. She knew his favourite dishes, the way he would frown when he disagreed with someone and the way his eyes would light up every time he would see her.

She couldn't deny that she was falling in love with him but she knew that it was wrong. She was a muslim and he was a hindu, thus her parents would never accept their relationship. Yet it was impossible to tell her heart to forget about him.

And one day she had to face the truth.

She was walking back home from her university library, when it started to pour. Her umbrella lasted for a few minutes before it flew away. Shivering and with chattering teeth, she still tried to walk back to the dorm.

While walking his car stopped in front of her and he sauntered out the car. She tried not to not notice his wet hair or the way his shirt stuck to his perfectly toned body but she couldn't avoid the intense look in his eyes.

"Come in the car with me." He ordered her, without preamble.

"But-"

He wouldn't listen to any of her protests; instead he dragged her to the car and made sure that her seatbelt was done.

Once inside the car, he began the dreaded conversation. "Why do you run away from me?"

"I...um...errr..." Geet's words were stuck in her throat. She wanted to tell him to go away from her, to not follow her anymore but she couldn't. Because she knew that she didn't want that.

Seeing her flustered state, Maan tried to lighten the mood. "Do I smell? Or am I that ugly?"

"No!" Geet quickly reassured him but then blushed at the implication of her denial. "I mean...look I don't know what you want but I don't even know you that well and yet you are following me around."

"Because I want to get to know you." Maan whispered. It was dangerous when he used this tone, especially when they were in a forced intimacy due to the confines of the car. "It's difficult to explain but from the moment I saw you I knew that we were meant to be together."

Geet just kept silent, while duel emotions of happiness and shock raged within her. She didn't know how to respond to his comment, whether to agree or reject.

"Say something, please." He insisted.

"I want to get to know you too." She murmured, barely audible but Maan had heard her and his face broke out into a large grin.

--------------------

Even amongst the tears, her lips upturned at the corners for a small smile. That moment had been the most beautiful moment. She had been sure that refusal was on her lips, yet she had agreed to be with him.

But as always moments like that were fleeting and reality would intrude. She could hear the birds sound of the birds chirping, signalling the beginning of the day as well as the deep breathing of the person next to her. All this forced her to open her eyes and stare into her real world.

--------------------------------

She was lying on the grass next to him, covered only by the sky and with nature as their only witness. Yes it was a cliched moment, but Geet couldn't care less because nothing mattered as long as she was with him.

He used a blade of grass to trail it down her face while she had her eyes closed. She tried to keep her body still as he made every attempt at tickling her but it was a futile endeavour as she burst out laughing the moment his fingers started to tickle her belly.

"I hate you." She grinned at him. "You are horrible for waking me up from my nap."

"You love me." He didn't sound smug, just happy. "You were dreaming about me anyways, so better see the real me instead of a dream. I want to be the first thing you see every time you wake up."

"What is the first thing you think of in the morning?" Geet asked him, while entangling her fingers with his. Somehow even the barest of touch with him made her heart lighter.

"I think of the world as it is and what I wish it could be." Maan told her.

Geet snorted. "Really? That's pretty deep to think about early in the morning. I can barely remember my name."

He chuckled. "Not really. I think of you; you are my world and I imagine you with me."

-------------------------------------

With a sigh she moved her husband's hand away from her waist.

Just as she was about slip out of the bed, her husband's hand caught her wrist to pull her back.

"Good morning darling." He whispered in his sleepy voice.

"Good morning." She murmured back.

"No morning kiss." He gave a small smile even though his eyes were still closed.

Slowly she brushed her lips across his cheeks and patted his hair before slowly getting off the bed. She knew that he had already fallen asleep by the time she stood up.

And she was glad that he wouldn't see the sadness in her face.

-------------------------------

They were sitting at a tiny bookstore with cups of coffee in both their hands. It was a common thing between them two, love for books and was something that they discussed at length. He would always tease her about her inner romantic, while she would scoff at his secret stash of trashy action novels.

Today she was reading one of her favourite books, Scarlet Pimpernel, and he was reading one of John Grisham's books.

Well Geet was reading while Maan was busy watching her. Geet could feel his eyes on her but still she tried to concentrate and ignore him. With an angry grunt, she turned to him and sternly told him. "Stop gawking at me! Read!"

"It's so much more fun to stare at you." He smirked, while using his toe to nudge her feet.

She shook her head and went back to her book. As she came across a particularly funny paragraph, where Percy was acting like an idiot, she burst out laughing.

But her laughter was cut short as Maan's lips captured hers for their first kiss. She had never been kissed before but it took only a split second for her to respond to him.

It was magical the way his lips moulded against hers and the way he tasted. Everything at that moment faded except them two. Geet didn't care that she was in a store, instead all that mattered was him.

Slowly Maan pulled away. "I've wanted to do that for so long." He smiled while leaning his forehead against hers.

"So did I." She whispered with a blush.

----------------------------------

As was her daily routine she went to the bathroom to freshen up as well as doing her ablutions for morning prayers.

Standing in front of the mirror, she stared at her face. The familiar curves and contours were somehow unknown these days. The blank expression in her eyes, the lines on her forehead and the harsh pursed lips were so different from what she used to be.

But then again she had always seen herself through his eyes and he had always made her look beautiful. Never had he let her doubt herself, not for a single moment.

Without him she had forgotten how to see the beauty in herself.

--------------------------------------

"Jaan close your eyes." He whispered into her ears as they stood in front of the mirror.

It was her birthday and he had made sure to come right at midnight. He had snuck through the back garden of her house and climbed through her window. She had warned him not to come, because her parents would find out but he was adamant that he would come to his Mishti's birthday.

She felt his hands go around her neck, brushing her skin lightly. She smiled even with her eyes closed as she felt the brush of his lips across her bare neck.

"Open your eyes." His husky voice ordered her.

Geet gasped as soon as she saw herself in the mirror. He had given her this beautiful necklace. It was a simple diamond pendant but it was perfection in her eyes.

"Thank you." She turned around to hold on to him and to hide her tears.

"It is the best I could do Mishti but it pales in comparison to you."

-----------------------------------

She splashed the water on to her face, trying to wash away the nostalgia but it was hardly a stain that would fade away.

Slowly she started her ablutions, Wadu, while murmuring a prayer. She let herself get lost in the comfort and calmness of the actions.

Yet even in these prayers he was associated, because she had become this pious as a result of being with him. It was ironic that despite loving someone of a different faith, that very love had made her faith iron strong.

----------------------------

She tried to stop but it was useless. The tears wouldn't cease to pour from her eyes.

"Jaan, please stop." Maan entreated her. "You know that I can't see you cry. Nothing hurts me more than seeing tears in your eyes."

"Then don't leave me!" She sobbed.

"Mishti, I am in the Army." He tried to make her understand. "I have a responsibility towards my country and people. If I don't go, then who will."

"I don't want to be away from you."

He put his fingers under her chin and lifted it up to make her face him. "I'll always be with you. No matter where I am, a part of me will be here with you. So never feel lonely."

"I am scared." She finally addressed her worries. "I won't be able to live without you."

"You won't need to." He reassured her.

But that wasn't enough for Geet. From that moment on, she made sure that she always pray for him. Her faith in the power of prayer was never greater than then, when she would use it to console herself and to reassure her anxieties.

Every letter of his that would come, would bring relief and giddy happiness. She would read every one of them so many times that the paper would nearly rip from all the creases. Every letter would be a sign that he was hers.

---------------------------------------

As she finished her Wadu, she started to wrap her dupatta around her hair to get ready for prayers. Gingerly she walked back in to her room and then out of the room to her prayer room.

This room was her sanctuary, the place where she could let herself find peace and try to make meaning of her life.

Whenever she felt that life was unfair or fate had dealt badly with her, she would come here to think through things.

It was here that she would remember his words of comfort and try to fight against the dark sadness that threatened to overtake her.

----------------------------------

The whole day Geet had been feeling restless. Something seemed out of place, but she tried to convince herself that everything was alright. Yet the lingering aura of bad omen crept in.

She did her afternoon Namaaz to calm herself and pray for good news but secretly prayed for endurance of any bad news.

Just as she finished, the doorbell rang. She ran across the room and opened the door to find a stricken looking Meera standing there. In Meera's hand there was a military duffel bag.

Geet didn't need Meera to say anything to understand everything. In a split second she knew what had happened. Shock, despair and disbelief were the milder emotions running through her.

"Geetu...Maan Bhai...is no longer...he is gone." Meera sobbed out, unable to speak coherently. But there was no need.

Geet collapsed onto the ground, not paying attention to her parents who came running up to her or how she was lifted up to her room.

All she could think was that her life was gone, he was gone. She felt so cold, as if frozen in a glacier and in a way that was comforting because no pain would come there.

Yet the pain did come and it came in a wave so strong that she lost her reason for living. Everyday was a battle, breathing become hard let alone functioning.

It was weeks before she could bare to read his diary, which he had left for her. Every entry mentioned her; he wrote about their first meeting, first kiss, first fight and their only separation.

However it was the last entry that broke her heart all over again, for it wasn't a diary entry but a letter to her.

"Dear Geet,

Here, despite the miles between us, I've never felt closer to you because with this distance comes the greater understanding of love. Every moment without you makes me realise how much I love you and that it will never end. It is because of the love for you that I am over here fighting. My country and people are represented by the image of you.

Everyday I wake up, ready to fight those who threaten our land, yet I feel safe because I know that there is someone praying for me. You are so pure, I can't imagine any merciful creator not answering your prayers.

However today I feel uneasy, like something is going to happen. So this is why I am writing this letter to you. If anything happens to me I don't want you to let go of life. I want you to fight for yourself and make sure that you're happy. Otherwise my death will be meaningless. Please don't lose your faith in humanity, because you are my faith.

So if you love me, you will keep this promise.

Forever yours,

Captain Maan Singh Khurana.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Yes she had done the unthinkable, she had gotten married and had kids. It has been 10 years since Maan passed away but not a single moment goes by when she doesn't remember their love and his words.

Every relationship she built afterwards was in memory of him and every happiness she felt was in honour of his wishes. Every time she would pray, she would pray for him as she had done previously.

As Geet finished her Namaz, she brought her palms in front of her and started to plead to her maker.

First she prayed for her family; children, husband and parents. She then prayed for her friends and colleagues.

It was only right at the end she prayed for Maan because if she prayed for him first, she would forget about everyone else.

i am always a silent reader of ur works... i usually click the like button to know my presence ;) but for this i cannot for i dont like sad endings... it was heart wrenching but i am sorry i cannot hit the like... so i am commenting to know my presence ;)

PS: i know people call me silly for not accepting sad endings but i'll tell u a secret the reason i hate sad endings is because i know reality always doesnt have happily ever after but the stories we spin do... we cannot control real life endings but we can in fiction so i dont want the opportunity to go wasted :D
