Chapter 15, Part 1: Knights in creaking armor.
Aadit rang the bell. He heard a musical voice call, "OP, could you please see who it is? OP? Never mind, I'll get it." The door swung open and he beheld the most beautiful creature he had ever seen. She had a peaches and cream complexion, long hair that hung loosely past her shoulders. She wore a plain yellow cotton saree and a tiny red bindi on her forehead. He was still staring at her like an idiot, when she looked at him quizzically and asked, "Yes? How can I help you?"
Freddy stepped forward. He had sensed that Aadit had become a blithering idiot the moment he'd set eyes on this ethereal beauty. She was just his type. Petite, pretty, slightly helpless looking. "Hi! My name is Freddy Meek. This is Aadit Murthy and that there's Nigel. We are here to speak with ASR."
"Freddy Meek! Oh yes. Chotey's new project. Do come in. He's in his study. I'll call him."
"May I know who I have the pleasure of addressing?" Aadit had clearly found his tongue.
"I am Anjali. Chotey's my baby brother." She led the way into the living room and they noticed that she limped heavily. "Please have a seat. I'll find him for you."
"She's his sister. Don't you dare hit on her!" Nigel hissed at Aadit angrily.
Freddy nodded sagely. "I agree. She's trouble."
"She's an angel. And her name even sounds like angel. I must get to know her better." Said Aadit reverentially.
"Aadit! For heavens' sakes. She probably married. And she's ASR's elder sister. She's probably a good 10 years older than you" Said Nigel.
"She can't be married. No! And as for the age difference, you know nothing about unconventional love, eh?" Aadit cocked an eyebrow at Nigel, who turned red and piped down.
ASR chose that minute to come down thundering down the stairs. "What's up fellas?" he asked, eyeing them uncomfortably. He knew it wasn't business, since Nigel was also with them. Anjali walked down the stairs slowly behind him. Aadit's eyes turned towards her immediately. And since Nigel was of the non-confrontational variety, it fell to Freddy's lot to begin.
"We wanted to talk to you. About Minnie" he swallowed uncomfortably at the look that crept into ASR's eyes when he mentioned her name.
"What about her?" snapped ASR. Anjali had now descended the stairs and stood next to her brother.
"What have you done to her?" asked Aadit, snapping out of his reverie.
"As far as I know, nothing."
"Then why did she cry a river down my very expensive shirt this morning?" asked Freddy.
"No idea"
"Look ASR" said Aadit, stepping towards him.
"No. You look. All three of you. I don't know why you're here. Even if there was something between Khushi and I, its none of your business. I suggest you back off" said ASR with a look that Anjali knew as the "calm before the storm stare."
Nigel stepped up. "ASR. We want to help you. You and Min both. But she won't let us help her. Why don't you let us help you?" he asked.
"Because I don't need your damn help" spat ASR. He looked at Anjali who laid an arm on his, and pleaded with him silently to say nothing. He quietened down.
"Chotey, I think you should listen to them. They can help you." She said.
"Di! She doesn't want anything to do with us. I told you. It's no use."
"Chotey, she was willing to go out with you till I went and spoke to her. Let these people help you. For my sake. Or I'll always feel guilty that I was the reason it didn't work out between you guys this time as well." Anjali looked so guilty that Aadit just wanted to hug her. Luckily a nip in the arm from Freddy nixed that idea.
"Di! Emotional blackmail is your forte. I can't believe I'm letting you do this to me" groaned ASR.
ASR looked at the trio in front of him. "You guys better sit down" he said.
"What do you want?" he asked them.
"Do you love her?" asked Freddy
ASR deliberated for a few seconds before he answered heavily, "Yes."
"Does she love you?" asked Aadit curiously.
"I thought she did. But clearly, she doesn't give a damn about me" said ASR bitterly.
"What are your intentions towards her?" asked Freddy in his usual patronizing manner. Aadit bit back a laugh. He looked at Anjali who's eyes were dancing too. Nigel looked petrified. ASR gave Freddy a disbelieving look before answering him slowly.
"I want her to be part of my harem" he smirked.
"Now! Now! Freddy. Don't ask stupid questions" said Nigel, doing what he did best. Pouring oil on troubled waters. "He'll marry her, of course. That is, I mean, you will, won't you?" he looked at ASR.
"If she'll have me. Yes" said ASR, wondering why he'd agreed to talk to the 3 Idiots in the first place.
"Well! Before she decided she'll have you, we need to make sure you're the right guy for her" said Freddy languidly. He was examining his nails as he spoke.
"What do you mean?" said ASR controlling himself with difficulty for the sake of his sister who threw him another pleading look.
"We mean that we need to make sure you're good enough for our Minnie. That you really care for her" said Aadit.
"Well, I won't walk on hot coals to prove my love or anything" said ASR.
"Not necessary. We're not quite that crude. We just have a few questions for you" Said Freddy.
"Questions? What kind of questions?" asked ASR. He looked puzzled.
"What's Minnie's favorite color?" asked Nigel.
"I'm not answering a f**king quiz on Khushi Kumari Gupta. I know her well enough" growled ASR.
"Arnav. Answer their questions" ASR knew he was in trouble when Di called him Arnav. She only did that when she was mad at him. He looked at the three self-satisfied men smirking in front of him. He'd show them, he thought. He knew Khushi in and out.
"Khushi likes Red" he said.
"Wrong" they said in unison.
"Her favorite color is blue. As in the sky." Explained Nigel, kindly.
"Who's her favorite actor?" asked Freddy.
"That's easy. Salman Khan" said ASR.
"Errr. Who is he?" asked Freddy. "She likes George Clooney" he said.
"And in Bollywood, she likes Ranbir Kapoor" said Aadit helpfully.
"What's her favortite food?" asked Aadit.
"It used to be jalebis. But she doesn't eat 'em anymore. So, maybe I'll just say, Oh, I don't know, Pizza" said Arnav.
"Huh! Who says she doesn't eat jalebis? She absolutely loves them. She makes 'em when she's mad. Yummy they are too!" said Nigel. "Freddy and I learned to love them because of her" he explained.
"Minnie hates Pizza. Never touches it unless she has to" said Freddy shaking his head ruefully.
ASR looked frustrated as hell. Why had she said she doesn't eat jalebis anymore, he thought. He just didn't understand her.
"What perfume does she wear to work daily?" asked Aadit
"How the heck do you know what perfume SHE wears to work?" asked ASR, now furious.
"Cos I gave it to her as a Christmas gift last year!" smirked Aadit.
"I'm not Al bloody Pacino, and this isn't Scent of a woman! I don't know!" he said exasperatedly.
"It's Light Blue, by Dolce and Gabbana" said Aadit.
"What is Minnie afraid of?" asked Nigel.
"Fast cars, the dark, sleeping alone" Said ASR without batting an eyelid.
"Funny, you don't know what she likes, and you know what she's afraid of" said Nigel.
"I guess that's the way it works sometimes. Her likes have changed as she has changed. Her fears haven't because they stem from a deeper sorrow." Said Anjali quietly.
"She's not so afraid of the dark anymore, by the way. She tried very hard and has almost gotten over that fear. She still hates fast cars, and if she feels a little lonely at night, she has 2 warm bodies to cuddle now." Said Freddy dryly.
"So, let me ask you this. You know her deepest fears. You obviously love her. Why doesn't she want to give you the time of the day?" asked Nigel, "If you don't mind my asking, that is."
Before ASR could answer, the bell rang. "I'll get it" he said and walked swiftly to the door. He swung it open swiftly to find Khushi standing in front of him.
"Can I come in?" she asked. He tilted his head for an answer, ushering her in. "Come on in. It's quite a party in here. Your knights in shining armor are already here to rescue you." He smirked.
"What? What are you talking about ASR?" she asked. Then she saw them. Nigel had turned pale. Aadit moved closer to Anjali, as if she made him feel safer. Neither of them would look her in the eye. Freddy alone looked nonchalant.
"Hey Minnie! Fancy seeing you here!" said Freddy.
"Yes. Fancy." Said Khushi in a stern voice.
"What are you boys doing here?"
The silence was deafening. "Cat got your tongue Freddy?" she asked. Freddy pretended to look out the window. "Nigel, when you told me wanted the afternoon off, I didn't realize you'd joined Rising Star. You guys are here to talk business, I presume" she said, eyes narrowing.
Nigel swallowed. "No Min. Not business. You know me. No head for business."
"Then why are you here?" she asked. Nigel shuffled his feet and looked down.
"OK. Aadit. These 2 are obviously useless. Will you please tell me what is going on and why you guys are here?"
"Oh! I'll tell you!" said ASR.
Aadit, Nigel and Freddy stared at ASR in terror.
