Kalyanji-Anandji revisited
Kamal Sadanah to redo the duo's tunes for the remake of Victoria No. 203

Kalyanji(r)-Anandji |
First it was Shankar-Ehsan-Loy who re-did Kalyanji-Anandji's 'Khai ke paan Banaraswala…' and 'Yeh mera dil…' in the voices of Udit Narayan and Sunidhi Chauhan, respectively.
Now producer Kamal Sadanah who's all set to re-make his father Brij Sadanah's blockbuster Victoria No. 203 plans to re-work at least two of the chartbusting tracks 'Do bechare bina sahare…', (picturised on film's protagonists Ashok Kumar and Pran) and Lata Mangeshkar's rare erotic song 'Thoda sa thehro…', (which became famous as Saira Banu's 'towel song').
Kamal Sadanah says: "It is the demand of the times. We'll certainly retain at least two of the super-hit songs from my father's film. But Himesh Reshammiya will have to re-do them. What makes me happy is that at a time when others are re-making films (Farhan Akhtar is working on Don, Rituparno Ghosh on Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam and Ram Gopal Varma is trans-locating Sholay) I'm doing my own father's films."
Of course Sadanah forgets that Feroz Khan is re-making his own Qurbani without retaining any of Kalyanji-Anandji's original tracks.
Says a leading music director: "I think it's very unfair to Kalyanji-Anandji and to those great voices that are being re-recorded. Anu Malik and Anand Raaj Anand are doing completely new music scores in new versions of Umrao Jaan and Qurbani. And that is how it should be. Why must we tamper with the creative property of the musical greats?"
Anant Mahedevan who will direct the new version of Victoria No. 203 has earlier transcreated RD Burman's songs in his film Dil Vil Pyar Vyar. Needless to say he is gung-ho about the project. "The victoria culture still exists in Mumbai. However we plan to get a special one made and, like my producer suggested, have it displayed during the premiere," Mahadevan says
The cast of the film is still being finalised. Mahadevan points out: "It is interesting to note that at a time when the star system ruled supreme, it was Ashok Kumar and Pran who played the leads. As for me, I am looking at Om Puri, Pankaj Kapur, Boman Irani and Naseeruddin Shah. We'll cast two of these actors. But Om is a near-certainty."
Kamal Sadanah had made his debut as a leading man opposite Kajol in Bekhudi. Some years ago he almost lost his entire family in a gruesome Diwali tragedy when his father producer-director Brij Sadanah shot arbitrarily at the family and then shot himself.
Kamal has already produced an experimental marital drama Karkash featuring Anoop Soni and Suchitra Pillai as the couple.
"I plan to release Karkash commercially on the same day as Victoria No. 203," he promises.
Well friends.. HR is redoing K-A classics.. it was not yet sure, he himself is singing these songs...
