7. Wishes
It was Friday night and he was already late due to a meeting. He just hoped Geet had made the advance reservation. He hated waiting for anything. As he walked into the room hurriedly he didn't notice his own personal 'hurricane on two legs' coming out of the room. She would have fallen if he hadn't caught her. Alarm left her the moment she felt his touch and was replaced by a serene expectation. Her hair felt like silk as it brushed his arm and her skin smooth where his hand touched. He could easily loose himself in the depth of her kohl-smudged eyes. But the absolute trust and belonging he saw in her eyes together with the spark of desire moved him into action. Pushing himself straight and her along with him he asked,
"Do you always have to be in a hurry, Geet? Can't you look where you are going? You could have fallen now!"
"How can I when you are there to hold me? You are always there to break my fall." She smiled.
"You say that as if this is something that happened often in the past."
"Yes, when ever I landed in trouble you were there to help me." Her voice echoed with reminiscence.
"Is that why I married you because you needed someone to take care of you?" He asked arrogantly.
"I believe we got married because we were in love. But yes love does instill protective instincts. If you are thinking of provoking me to a fight so that you wouldn't have to take me to dinner, it's not going to work. You promised me a dinner and I'm holding you to it."
"Were are we going? I hope you have booked in advance." Maan asked while they were on the road. He wondered why he was feeling so defensive tonight. May be because she looked so beautiful wearing the white suit. Had she deliberately chosen his favourite color? The color suited her to perfection. It was difficult to keep his eyes from straying towards her.
"Oh,but you don't need to book in advance." She smiled.
"Geet!" his frustration at her obvious negligence evident in his voice. "It's Friday night! We wont get a table at short notice in any of the 5 star restaurants."
"Who said I want to have dinner in any 5 star?"
"You don't?" he was surprised. Thinking back he thought about the times he had went out on a date. It was always to some fancy restaurant because his date expected and preferred it.
"Just take the next right and we will reach."
"Right? But I don't remember any..." he saw the dhaba. "Here? We are having dinner here?"
"Yes! Tonight we are having desi Punjabi dinner."
Maan was not convinced. But Geet insisted saying that he was supposed to go by her wish. With great reluctance he sat on the cot and looked around with a critical eye. At least the place was neat he thought, when the order was brought Maan searched for the spoon and Geet chuckled.
"Maan aap bhi na! You eat with your hand."
"But..."
"I know you don't like to have masala coloring your hand. I have a solution for that..." She broke off a piece of roti , dipped it into the gravy and held it to his mouth. "...i'll feed you."
Maan glared at her without opening his mouth and then looked around. A few other diners were looking in their direction.
"Come on Maan...my wish ..." she coaxed.
"Dekhoji kitne pyare jodi hei!" he turned slightly to see the couple next to them observing them with obvious pleasure. Turning back he saw Geet smiling at them.
"Kha lo kha lo, kitne pyar se kudi khila rahi hei!" came the encouragement.
"Please, Maan ..." he couldn't resist the request in her eyes and opened his mouth. Did he hear a sigh from the next table?
Taking the first bite he gasped and coughed.
"Is it spicy? But I had ordered the least spicy ones, knowing that you cant eat spicy food." Geet offered a glass of water.
"You think I can't eat spicy food?" Maan asked. Here was the perfect chance to prove her wrong, to prove that she didn't know him as much as she thought she did. He saw her smile as if his question did not need an answer. He reached forward to take a green chilli from the plate and saw her expression change. He took bites of it, ignoring the burning in his mouth and the concern in her whispered voice, "Maan..."
As he finished the first chilli he reached for another, his eyes still holding hers, his head tilted in challenge. The fire burned his throat and he coughed, but refused to stop. Thru the blur of tears that filled his eyes, he saw her stand up and move towards him. She caught his hand preventing him fro eating further.
"Why do you punish yourself to prove me wrong?" she wiped the tear that dropped down his cheek then cupped his cheek for a moment...an elusive memory flashed away before he could grasp it. Geet took the glass of lassi from the table and brought it to his lips. "Please Maan ..." she requested him to oblige.
She smiled as she put away the glass and asked, "Okay?"
When he nodded, she said, "You have a creamy mustache!" she wiped it off his upper lip and saw desire spark in his eyes and an answering awareness flashed in hers. The muffled laughter from the next table brought them back. Geet proceeded to feed him the dinner.
"Maan is it too much to ask you to relax yourself to spend a comfortable evening with me? Being with you for such a long time its quite natural that I would know your likes. I wouldn't be a good wife if I didn't even know your preference in food." She paused to hold his eyes and continued, "I'm sorry I know you don't like to be reminded of the marriage. But do you have to be defensive around me always?"
"No. it's just..." she placed a finger on his lips.
"You don't have to explain. ...my wish was to enjoy a dinner with u. if you are not able to relax, there is no pleasure in this dinner for me. So will you forget that we have any issues and just relax a bit, please?"
It was difficult not to accept her when she put forth her argument so impressively. And he couldn't reject the appeal in her eyes. So he decided to let his guard slip a bit and enjoy the company of the woman he was with.
As days passed he found that he was becoming fascinated with the woman he was married to. She was a unique combination of a child and a woman. But she never hurt any one deliberately, she could keep her calm even at the most tense situation and always knew when and how to react. She had strong bonds within his office and had a knack for friendship. Mahindra Tandon was all praise for her work and he felt that their friendship extended beyond work. Thru her wishes he got to know her better, her likes and dislikes. He knew she was a great fan of bollywood movies and thus she pulled him along to watch the latest movie. He disliked going to movies but as it was her wish to watch a movie with him he agreed. He spent the whole time watching her reaction to what was happening on screen. The dim lit room gave a kind of dreamy feel. He found the ever changing expression of her face more fascinating than any intriguing plot, her enthusiasm as the story progressed, her laughter at the comedy, her support for the hero in the action scenes and the way her eyes misted when the lovers parted. Her eyes turned dreamy at the romance and she linked her hand thru his unknowingly. He found that he didn't have the heart to disengage her hands from his.
After the movies she couldn't stop singing the praises of the hero. "...and did you see Maan, during the fight when he took off his shirt... I too wanted to whistle, but didn't know how. Have you ever seen such a well -toned body? ...no wonder he has such a lot of fans."
"What do you mean ...you have never seen such a well-toned body?" Maan asked irritated.
"May be I did see ...but how can I be so sure...it's been a while..." she said softly biting back a smile.
"What?"
"I didn't say anything." She gave him a wide-eyed innocent look. "Did you hear something?"
" You said you have seen someone."
"Oh! Did I? But how could that b, Maan? As you say I'm a small town girl, and where do I get to see someone like that?"
"You are saying you never saw ..."
"Oh yes!" Maan looked at her expectantly. "You know once there was a wrestling match in HP. But then, Brij veerji took us away before the wrestlers removed their shirts..."
"I'm going to have my swim." Maan stalked off leaving behind a giggling Geet.
