Jealousy

After Meera's funeral and two hours of bawling my eyes out, Maan drove me to the palace. As soon as we arrived, I tied my dubatta around my waist and started working.
The first thing I did was clean the floors of bedrooms.
I scrubbed hard in the Queen's bedroom, nearly peeling the skin off my palm. It hurt.
But I didn't care if it hurt or not. I wanted to do anything that took my mind off Meera. And pain seemed like a good option.
Next, I mooved to the King's bedroom and scrubbed hard on the floor. My hands had turned pink and looked raw. But I didn't care. After that, I moved to Maan's bedroom.
Holding the broomstick, cloth, and bucket of water in my hands; I entered Maan's bedroom only to be frozen in my steps.
They were kissing.
Maan and some other girl.
That same girl who gave me that look in the dining room.
I gulped, and watch the smooching and heard the moans. I could feel my cheeks burn, and I felt like I was invading their territory.
I also felt betrayed.
How could Maan kiss some other girl?
Wait, Maan doesn't even like me. In fact he hated me from day one. We weren't even a couple! So why should I feel betrayed? Why do I feel like I should be that girl in his arms?
Girl: "What the bloody hell? Were you watching us?!" she yelled at me, snapping me away from my thoughts. Maan's top three buttons were open and the girl was clutching his collar and looking at me with a disgusted face.
Maan looked towards me.
"I was... I was just..." I stared at my bucket of water, wishing I could somehow shrink and drown myself in there.
Girl: "Watching. Is that what all low-class girls like you do? I don't even know why the Queen let you step into this house. Filthy, bitch" she eyed me up and down and snarled.
I stood there, dumbfounded; Feeling the anger build up inside me.
Maan: "Sophia!" he said and stared at her with anger
So that was her name.
Sophia.
Sophia: "What I said was absolutely --"
Maan: "Rude and disrespectful" he completed her sentence and pushed her away from himself. He swiftly buttoned up and was about to say something when I interrupted him.
I walked over to Sophia, and pointed my broomstick at her.
"Are you so poor, you can't afford clothes? You might as well go naked. I mean, it won't make a difference considering the tight and revealing clothes you wear. Your skirt is so short, I can see your panties" I retorted, feeling proud of myself and satisfied as her cheeks turned a colour of bootreet.
Sophia: "Have you seen yourself? Look at the clothes YOUR wearing. Who's the poor one now?" she said and smirked.
I looked down at my dirty Salwar Kameez which was meant to be white but looked like a grey/black colour due to the dirt. My sleeves had a hole in one of them and my shoes were really worn out. My hair was tied in a lose braid, which was now falling apart.
She was right, I was poor.
Sophia: "Your so dirty, you don't deserve to live in this pure and clean palace. You look so small compared to us, rich people. What are you planning to do? Marry Maan and take over the palace?"
I had nothing to say.
All I wanted to do, was get a job and earn money and this is being made into such a big deal.
Maan: "That's enough, Sophia. She's going through a lot of crap lately, let's not --"
Sophia: "I don't care if her mum dies, or her dad dies, or her sister dies. It still doesn't change what her status is"
I wanted to get out of this suffocating room.
"My mum, dad, and sister are already dead. I do not have a brother" I said bluntly, swallowing the lump the size of a tennis ball in my throat. I glanced at Maan who stared at me in shock.
Sophia just stared at me.
"Thanks for rubbing it in my face though" I said in a low voice, tears threatening to fall down my cheeks. I turned around and left before I started to break down and embarrass myself in front of the couple.
It was 5:30pm and the Queen ordered me to start making dinner. I obeyed her and started for the kitchen when I felt a warm hand on my arm.
"I have work to do" I said, trying my best not to stare at Maan's gorgeous face.
Maan: "We need to talk" he said and I looked around me. The Queen was gone.
"There's nothing left to say" I said and stared ahead bluntly. My life was stupid, dull, boring, and crap.
I wanted to die.
I couldn't cry, not now. So I clenched my teeth and it took every ounce of my strength to try and not cry.
Maan took my hand and was about to take me somewhere when he abruptly stopped and turned my palms over. He looked at my hands in shock.
Maan: "What have you been doing?" he asked in disbelief.
I tried to take my hand away from his grasp but he had his hold on me.
"It's nothing to worry about" I lied, even though my hands were burning; in pain; and feeling raw.
Maan: "I hate people who lie" he said and I knew he was staring at me, trying to get me to look at him.
"Don't you already hate me?"
Maan sighed and let go of my hand. Ha, he had nothing to say to that did he?
Maan: "I'm sorry about what Soph --"
"Save it" I said and tried to walk away but he grasped my arm.
Maan: "Don't turn away from me" he commanded
"Whatever" I said, forgetting he was a Prince and the things he could do. I widened my eyes once I realized what I just said.
The next thing I knew, I was pinned against the wall.
Maan: "I hate people who don't look at me, who lie to me, who ignore me, and who speak like that to me" his angry eyes bore into mine.
"Well I guess you hate me a lot now don't you? Why don't you go back to your girlfriend?" I spat
And yes, I was jealous; That Maan had a girlfriend and that too such a beautiful one. I was nothing compared to her.
Maan came closer to me, closing any space we had between us.
He smelt delicious.
Maan: "Jealous, aren't you?" he read my mind, his minty breath blew on my cheek. He had that smirk on his face. The one that made my knees wobbly. The one I hated so much.
"No, why would I be jealous?"
Maan: "Because I was kissing her instead of you" he whispered seductively in my ear, even though I didn't want him to answer that question.
What he said was SO true.
But I still denied it.
"Hai Baabaji, chi chi chi" I said, pretending to put on a disgusted face even though I really wanted to.
Maan frowned and brang his face closer to my ear. He sniffed, like he was smelling my perfume and then let me go.
