A content man at present, he accepts things are getting better for him, specially with his last mega political drama Sarrkkar where he played Karan Pratap Singh, a character loosely based on Sanjay Gandhi.
And he earned rave reviews for the same."In many ways, it was the return of Rohit Roy on small screen," quips the actor, who shot to fame with his portrayal of an angry young man, Rishabh Malhotra, in Mahesh Bhatt's tele venture Swabhimaan in the late 90s.
Meanwhile, most of the characters he has played had shades of rebellion in them. And he accepts that he liked playing such roles as he's a bit like them."If I had my way, I would have made all characters a rebel," chuckles an ardent Big B fan, adding,"But they aren't so just for the heck of it.
Take Karan Pratap Singh for an instance. He believed in truth and stood by it. For him repetition of a mistake is nothing but a crime."
Someday, he wants to play a character similar to James Dean's role in the film, Rebel Without A Cause. Is it because of his choice of role that he's often mistaken for being arrogant?"I don't know.
I am just irreverent, which people take as attitude. May be people still identify me with Rishabh's character," avers the actor, who'll be seen playing the romantic lead in his next mega soap Virasat."This surely will give me an image make-over," he adds.
His inning on the big screen wasn't a great success story with his last two films, Plan and Ek Khiladi Ek Hasina (EKEH) failing at the box-office.
But he takes it in his stride and not as the end of the road."I am a star on TV and not in Bollywood. If a film flops it's a team failure," he says, adding that he's happy that his 20 minutes work in EKEH got noticed more than the leads.
But has the experience helped him improve as an actor? He says he has improved but the credit goes to someone else."I have become a better actor since my daughter Kiara's birth. I am working hard today, as I don't want her to get disappointed with me as an actor later."
He acted with his actor brother Ronit Roy in Sarrkkar. How was the experience?"Fantastic," he says, adding"It's the highlight of my career. Though I always do my homework, but for all the scenes that I had with him, I just went and acted. It was very much the way I talk or fight with him in real life."
Apart from his new soap, he has four films in hand: Shoot Out At Lokhandwala, Delhi Heights, Dus Kahaniyaan and Sanjay Gupta's Alibaugh. Not surprisingly, Rohit's focus right now is on doing"good work."
