Part 18
The quaint building was imposing from inside. The gentle swishing of the river nearby could be heard. The lavish neon lights from the city skyline reflected in the dark water. The twinkling starlight was hidden by the grey clouds. Riverdale Side was an expensive fine diner located at the northern suburb of the city. My eyes wandered in search of him.
Carefully lifting the sari by the sides I slowly moved towards him. He was sitting on the fifth table waiting for me. I fumbled with every two steps I took. I inwardly cursed my sari. Aunt and mom had conspired against me forcing me to don this traditional 9 yards of piece.
"What are you saying Rita? She wore tank tops when she met Aman? , "mom shouted over the loudspeaker.
"I was out on my morning jog then!"
"Relax sis, Nupur wore decent top. It's what the new generation wears these days."
"But what impression will Aman get? They belong to a conservative family. Nupur promise me you'll wear a suit when you next meet him."
"I'll wrap a blanket around me. You know where he took me out? Yeah don't blame him! It's always me! Why are you stopping at suit? Ask me to wear a sari!"
"That's a lovely idea, beta. Yes wear a sari this time. He will get sure of our strong traditional values. Rita make sure she wears one. "
"Yes sister I'll see to it."
My mouth hung open."Hey…I was just kidding!"
"Nupur what are you wearing? It doesn't suit this place."
"I think I should go back to change."
"Hey…it's okay I guess now that you are already here. Don't bother. It's just that this dress is not a part of US culture."
"I am Indian."
"Ofcourse we both are. Anyways let's enjoy our dinner here. Do you like this place?"
"It's beautiful. You order. I am not hungry."
"What? Have something please. I am sorry for last night."
I skeptically raised my brows.
"I know I acted like a dork gulping down those pegs and getting sloshed. Trust me that won't happen again."
"Do I have any choice other than believing you?"
"I m really sorry Nupur."
"Well it's alright. You just got carried away. It happens."
"So I am forgiven?"
"Who am I to forgive? Aman let's forget that. It wasn't half as bad as your dancing."
" I wanted it to be the same way as our high school prom."
" You remember that? We were so stupid that time."
"My happiness had no bounds when you finally accepted my last dance. And I made you fall trying to twirl you. Those times were the best. Stupid but innocent fun."
"Time keeps changing for more wonderful things to come our way. Look at you. Who would have ever though the nerd would be wearing tux with gelled hair being totally suave? You yourself have changed."
"You like this change?"
"It's better for sure." I sipped my fruit-based cocktail.
"Glad you liked it."
"You were always such a sweet and helpful friend. None would ever get Kaninka mam's blabbering in lectures except for you. The next day you would have notes ready for the whole class."
Something hard obstructed my tonsils. I choked coughing out the hindrance. It was a round tiny slender silvery ring.
"You just proposed me!" My eyes went wide with shock.
"Yes. I promise to be always that friend to you. But with a new name. Will you marry me Nupur?" He lifted the ring with his fingers and held it out for me.
I stared at the tiny glistening structure. My brain had stopped working for a moment. I had always run away whenever mom brought out the topic for my marriage. It was not easy making this one life changing decision. Marriage was not just friendship. It entailed more than that. You completely surrender yourself to the person you marry to complete your marriage. Was Aman the right person I had been waiting all along all this while? Does he makes butterflies fly in my stomach when I see him? Does the world comes to a standstill when he smiles at me? Does my heart do a cartwheel when he's near? Can I ever accept him more than a friend with my whole heart and soul? My head hurted.
"Aman…This…I…I had not been expecting this so soon. Hope you understand. It's just that I am not ready. I need some time."
"Oh…okay…I guess my timing is too early. Well take your time Nupur." He put the ring back inside his pocket.
"Thanks. I am just coming from the washroom. Excuse me."
"Sure."
Forcing a smile at him I got up and headed towards the washroom. I tried to walk as fast this cumbersome sari would allow me. I stopped in the passage. The open air of the river was tempting. I went to the side balcony overlooking the river. A strong wind was blowing. I looked down at the turbulent river. Silent tears rolled down my cheeks.
Why was it so hard? If not Aman, it will be someone else but not him. Why is he bothering you? I angrily wiped away my tears.
You chose to go away from him then crying buckets was useless now. I looked at the nearby bridge spanning the river making the two sides meet. I wondered if we were just like the two banks of a river. Running parallel but never destined to meet. There was no bridge in sight to connect us.
I tucked the flowing strands of my hair behind my ears and turned to go back inside. I collided with something hard. His drink spilled over to his coat.
"Sorry…Sorry…I didn't saw…"
"I am getting used to your clumsiness, Saxena."
Instantly I looked up. "Mayank…….I swear it was by accident. Sorry. Let me clean it."
"It's alright. It happens. Relax. I'll manage."
"You here?"
"Dropped in to grab a drink after a whole tiring day practicing the bike stunts." He wiped the stains off his coat with a napkin.
"I am sorry once again."
"I said it's alright. Hope you are enjoying here."
He was smiling at me. His voice was soft and gentle.
"You are not….not angry with me?
"Why should I be? Surely you didn't murder someone." He winked.
"I can't believe this…..for last night."
"Hmmm…..it's not for lack of trying though. I tried being angry with you for my rejection but remembering the pearls in your eye it melted away."
"I know I was a bit ..you know…rude…okay harsh…fine.wasn't I simply cruel?"
"Cruel and you can't ever exist in the same sentence. Your harshness I deserved it. You had to be rude . I know I was hard. Well…umm…usually I am soft though."
Nervously I bit back my lower lip as my cheeks reddened.
"I….I have to go. Else my food will get cold. Bye."
"Take care Nupur." He nodded.
I whisked ahead by his side. The drape slid off my blouse. Something had tugged it from behind. I quickly turned back trying to hold it from completely sliding off. The flowing loose end of my sari had stuck in his metallic wrist watch. The loyal tears threatened large in my eyes as I tried to cover up this embarrassment.
He quietly worked the drape around stuck in his watch's sharp ends. Keeping his eyes lowered he held it back for me. My trembling hands clutched the cloth and I properly draped it back on my chest. I was not able to utter thanks as the lump in my throat choked me.
"Cummon…ab bade bade deshon mai…aisi choti choti cheezein hoti rehti hai"
I couldn't help smiling."Hahaa….you are SRK fan?"
"I hate him. What's there to like in uncle?"
"Watch it. I won't hear a word against my SRK."
"Woah ….like he knows you exist."
"Feelings exist even if the other person does not know."
"Or refuse to accept it?
"Maybe. May I know why are being so nice to me after everything that happened? I thought you'd be mad at me for the rest of our lives."
"Do I hear concern?"
"Curiosity."
" Which is sprinkled with concern."
"I am serious Mayank."
"Well then, just trying to be the nice guy you wanted me to be."
"You don't have to change for me."
"I know I don't have to….but I want to."
"You are still hoping Mayank?"
"Shouldn't I be? Anyways I am keeping you too long. Go and enjoy your food. Good bye."
Today was a fairytale, you were the prince
I used to be a damsel in distress
You took me by the hand, and you picked me up at six
Today was a fairytale, I wore a dress
You wore a dark gray t-shirt
You told me I was pretty when I looked like a mess
Today was a fairytale
You've got a smile that takes me to another planet
Every move you make, everything you say is right
Today was a fairytale
Time slows down whenever you're around
I can feel my heart, it's beating in my chest
Did you feel it?
I can't put this down
But can you feel this magic in the air?
It must have been the way you kissed me
Fell in love when I saw you standing there
It must have been the way
Today was a fairytale
"Mayank wait. Wait up!!"
All the running made me pant hard. I have to tell him before he leaves."
"Easy girl. What's the matter? Is a tornado coming?"
"I….I…need to say something."
"Huh…Okay…go on..I am all ears."
"Well I need to start from the start where it all started."
"Start soon before I get lost."
"Ssshhh….let me complete. You know the first time I saw you I thought you were…."
"Hot."
"No!"
"Must be sexy then?"
"Mayank!"
" You sure you don't have any eye-sight problem?"
"I am going to kill you if you interrupt me one more time."
"Sorry. Continue."
"The first time I saw you I thought you were all that clichd. Snob, arrogant, flirt, Casanova, insensitive jerk. But slowly I discovered that was just an act. You were actually a nice guy behind all that and slowly we came friends. Somewhere in the middle I realized that I…..you…I….I.."
"….realized that?"
"I -realized -that –you- are -such -a -good -dancer. " I blurted out at full speed.
"What? Well say it sometime next. I m getting late. Bye Nupur."
"No wait. There's something more."
"Yes.I am waiting"
I inhaled a deep breath. Go on say it Nupur.
"You don't pamper me when I lose my mind but make me see the right way. You make me smile by your silly flirting. You bear my clumsiness without any hassels. You understand when I have not shared the problem with you. You act so dumb when your friends are around but show me the real you as you mellow down. Everything you say..everything you do has made me realize that I…I…"
"I….?"
"Nupur!"
"Aman what are you doing here."
" I should be the one asking this question. What are you doing with Mayank in the parking lot?"
" I met him upstairs by chance and was bidding him off."
"Nupur you were saying something."
"Great! Nupur you told him that we are getting married. I proposed to her tonight."
"Oh…wow…you just left the best news for the last eh?"
I felt myself paralyzed at the spot. No you have got it all wrong Mayank. The words were not coming out from my mouth.
"Congratulations Nupur. Aman you are one lucky guy. Congrats dude."
His cold stiff voice unnerved me.
"Thanks Mayank." He laid his arms on my waist pulling me close.
I saw him turning around to back to his car. I wanted to shout, to scream out, stop him but my body was going a momentary seizure. The engine roared and I could see him leaving.
Oh baby can't you see
'Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter
And my daddy said stay away from Juliet
But you were everything to me
I was begging you please don't go and I said
Romeo take me somewhere we can be alone
I'll be waiting all there's left to do is run
You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess
It's a love story baby just say yes
Romeo save me, they try to tell me how to feel
This love is difficult, but it's real
Don't be afraid, we'll make it out of this mess
It's a love story baby just say yes
