Bollywood stars overpaid: Wikileaks

Actor Vidya Balan's reported boyfriend Siddharth Roy Kapur, the head honcho of a production house has made an appearance on Wikileaks saying that there's too much money in Bollywood.

"Following the Hollywood model, many film and entertainment companies are moving away from an actor/star-based system to a system more reliant on the production company's brand, and its stable of producers and directors," Kapur said.

Kapur has apparently blamed excessive competition and multiple avenues and sources of financing for much of the industry's problem because there is too much money and too many people chasing limited amount of talent. In doing so, studios can lessen their dependence on actors — who often command fees for as much as 50 per cent of the film's budget compared to 10-15 per cent in the US — and increase their chances of profitability for each film, according to the US diplomatic cable sent in February 2010.

Akshaye Widhani, the head honcho of another prominent production house owned by Yash Chopra was also quoted as supporting the view. He was quoted as saying that there is a "price bubble" in thefilm industry.

Widhani believed that costs have to decrease by 40 per cent for the film business to sustain itself in the long term. However, actors' expectations will become more realistic only after one of the major production studios fails or declares bankruptcy, he said.

The document therefore seems to imply that the salaries are too high in Bollywood. "…Nevertheless, with modest revenues and low profitability, the industry's impact (on the global market) is more cultural than economic," the document says.

Yes, actors are overpaid, and I say that due to poor acting/poor storyline in most of the movies today. I am not sure if this is correct, but I would say they are good at sales and marketing. I think somewhere they are so concerned about the movie becoming a hit... that they fail to consider the quality of cinema. As an example I would mention Bodyguard (apologize Salman Khan fans).

"actors ' who often command fees for as much as 50 per cent of the film's budget"

No wonder there is so much of publicity. Multiple articles filled with fake link-ups, plus so many appearances on various TV shows etc. Every actor in the industry is busy trying to sell the movie, while this approach brings money it also takes out the mystery surrounding the actor/his character/ or even the movie. As audience we are aware about movies releasing months in advance. There is hardly any element of surprise. Secondly even the most ridiculous movies with a very poor storyline manage to become big hits - Thanks to the publicity! Instead of solely focusing on selling the movie and earning money maybe they should focus on the quality of the cinema as well.

For now this approach is working, but will it work in the long run??

@Infinity: Good question...will it work in the long run? Even in Hollywood huge promotions are done surrounding movies. But then they also have smaller films with great content to balance out the glamorous big films. Actors attempt to work in different varies of roles. Those actors with limited acting capabilities know their limits stick to their own genre of movies.
The problem I have with Bollywood is lack of experimentation. Two south action movies worked and now whole Bollywood wants to those kinds of films. 40+ actors on steroids pair themselves with 20 something girls and do these larger than life roles propped up by technical wizardary.
Coming to the pay packets though few execs here are quoted that Bollywood stars are overpaid the reality is that its corporates these execs run which overpays the stars and are always eager to bend backwards to please them. Its not the best example but how many producers can be like the Bhatts and say no to huge star fees and opt for newcomers instead? There are around 10-15 actors and around the same of number of actresses considered saleable and everyone is hankering after their time. Why not create new stars? How many studios will risk their ventures with newbies?

@kshreya: I am not sure if I can say this, but I have always believed that in Hollywood most actors pick the right script (i.e. Kate Winslet). At some point or the other 40+ actors will have to play characters around their age. Some of them are starting to look really old. Maybe 5-6 years from now? Max 10 years?? I like your point about creating new stars. I liked Ranveer as an actor in Band Baja Baraat. It will be nice if everyone started working with newcomers. They will have to pay them less, and if they have a decent script in hand the movie might even work.

@Infinity: I agree...Hollywood stars are not afraid to play their age. Sometime back I was watching a mindless Bruce Willis action movie. The movie was like the usual Hollywood masala fare but atleast he was shown to have a grown up daughter who was getting married. The actress who was supposed to be his ex-wife also looked 40+ and not a 20 something girl. But here we have the 40+ Aamir playing a teen in 3 Idiots. Yes...he is a good actor...the movie was nice...but AK as a teenager?!!!!

If you had to pick just one Bollywood movie as your all-time favorite, which one would it be? And what makes it so special for you?
