Chapter 53
Maan: Ok so where do I start? (he looks around the kitchen..he takes some a pan and sets it on the gas.) What should i make? Maybe rice? Yeah that should be easy. I saw Geet make it millions of times. What does she do first?..ohh yeah she puts water in the pan (he fills the pot all the way up..) there that should be enough for the rice to cook. hmm ok then I add the rice since it is a big family i will add two big glasses in case. (He takes the glasses filled with rice and throws it in the pan and sets the gas on high) Ok that was easy. I don't know why Geet complains about cooking. It is piece of cake. Rice should cook any minute now. hmm she challenged MSK well she doesn't know what i am made of. I will make food and way better then her too then she will appreciate me and learn not to challenge me ever again. (Sargam peeps into the kitchen to see what he was doing and runs back upstairs to Geet...MJ and Armaan comes in the kitchen..)
Armaan: Papa what are you making?
Maan: umm I was thinking rice with I don't know yet...let it be surprised.
MJ: Make it soon because we are hungry
Maan; Ok..why don't you guys play for a while and I will call everyone for dinner. (Maan took out reciepe book on how to make a daal...) Ok lets see, lets make rajama with this.
Step1: soak the rajama overnight in hot water..."overnight? I don't have time for that..so I will skip this part)
Step2: Boil the rajma in pressure cooker and add turmeric powder, salt and green chillies."ok..pressure cooker..lets see.." (he looks through all the cabianets for the pressure cooker.
He takes some pots out and sets it on the table) "Where is it?" (He takes out all the pots and pans from each cabinant making a huge mess...after a while he gives up and looks around the kitchen...) "there you are..." (he sees the pressure cooker in the corner on top of the counter...he places it on the stove with water..) "Now how much should I add? hmm since I made two glasses of rice maybe I should add three glasses of rajma..." (he finds the rajma after making another huge mess and turns the gas on high...) "ok that was easy..Now what.."
Step3: After 3 whistles, lower the flame and cook for another 30 minutes "skip..that will happen later..."
Step4: Take a pan and add 2 tsp of oil. Once the oil is hot add chopped onions and cook until it is golden brown. "Oil..now where is that?" (he finally finds it after few minutes...and starts chopping the onions completly forgetting about the rice..he adds the onion...) "Ok I should be a cheff..this is piece of cake...this will make Geet shut up..."
Step5: Add ginger and garlic and mix with the onions...
Step6: Add in the Tomato Puree. Mix again.
Step7:Cook till the oil starts to seperate. Keep an eye on it and keep stirring frequently.
Step8:Add in Coriander Powder, Chaat Masala & Garam Masala.
Step9:Add in a little water (about 1/4 cup) to help mix in the dry spices and to prevent it from burning. Cook for a couple of minutes. "How many steps are there? This is taking so long..."
Step10:Open the Pressure Cooker once the pressure has gone and add in the Rajma to the masala. ("where are the directions on how to open up a pressure cooker? what is this...he looks at the cooker with his hands on his hips..."hmm maybe if I hit it..couple of times it will open up..." He takes a rolling pin and starts hitting it..."come on open up..." He keeps hitting it until the cooker explodes...Maan stands there shocked...Rajma was everywhere..he looks around and rajma was on every single corner even the celling...then he smelled something buring...he looks at the rice pan and quickly runs to it. As soon as he opens the lid smoke comes out. He turns off the gas and stirs the rice only to see the rice completly burned. "shit Geet is going to kill me. What should I do? I can't order out or else she will know and with Sargam home as her chamachi she will defentially know..." He heard the kids yelling. He quickly goes and stands out the kitchen blocking them.
Maan; Where are you kids going?
Sargam: We want to see what you are making.
Maan: It is a surprise. I am almost done. Why don't you guys go and play.
MJ: Ok but hurry because mom is getting irratated and she told us to tell you that Asha can't eat spicy food. So you have to prepare her food seperatly.
Maan: Ok anything else?
MJ (thinks): umm no that's it
Armaan: ohh yeah she also said not to mess up.
Sargam: And that don't order the food from outside she will know.
Maan (roles his eyes): Anything else maa ke chamcheo...(They shake their heads no) Good then now go play. I will call everyone for dinner. (They laughed and left...Maan quickly ran in the kitchen and started thinking of what else to make)

Everyone sat on the dinner table waiting for the food. The kids were busy talking to themselves and picking on each other. Geet tried to look inside the kitchen but wasn't able to since the chair that Maan placed her on compeletly blocked the kitchen view...
"I know you are hidding something from me Maan. I don't know what but if I do then you are in big trouble. Lets see how was it to be in my shoes today. This should be interesting..." She smiles. Kids starts yelling when they see Maan coming out with a tray. He puts the tray down and everyone starts looking at each other with shock.
Geet: What is this? Sargam was telling me you are making rice.
Maan: ohh yea well I just did that to fool you. I knew you would send Sargam down to spy on me.
Geet: But Maan how do you expect peanut butter and jelly sandwiches fulfilling for dinner? And
Asha can't eat this.
Maan: The deal was for me to make dinner and I did. You didn't tell me what to make and what not to make. You have to eat whatever I make and as for Asha I made a jelly sandwhich without the peanut butter.
Geet: Look how messy it is. The kids the dropping it more on themselves.
Maan: Let them eat however. Now I am very hungry so let me enjoy my food. (he takes a bite of the sandwhich forcefully and smiles at Geet pretending to like it.)
"You won this round Maan but lets see how you manage to put kids to sleep." She smirks.
Geet: Maan don't forget to put kids to sleep. Good luck
Maan (smirks): I don't need luck.
MJ: Papa I want chocolate milk.
Maan: We don't have it.
MJ: Yes we do. I know where it is let me show you.
Maan (panicks): uhh MJ I know where your mom keeps it and I looked in that place that is why I am telling you we don't have it. (MJ puts on a sad face and sits down..)
Sargam: dad don't want you to go to the kitchen because of the mess he made (she laughs...Geet chokes on her sandwich and looks at Maan angirly..)
Maan (gives her a warning look which makes her look down..he looks at Geet and smiles a little): what a joke. She should be a comedian. (he laughs nervously)
Geet: Mess? What mess? Carry me to the kitchen right now and prove it to me there is no mess.
Maan: Geet I am telling you na there is no mess in the kitchen. I had paid Sargam some money to say that so umm we could see your reaction. Right Sargam. (She looks at Maan then to Geet..Maan shows her some money from the corner..she smiles and nodes her head yes...)
Geet: hmm but still I want to see..
Maan (looks at his watch..) well dinner is over how about we watch a movie before going to sleep. what say kids? (All scream yes..he quickly gets off the table and clears it before Geet could say anything...He then carries Geet to her room. She tried to peak into the kitchen when Maan was walking past the kitchen but before she could do so Maan turned her head his way...He places her on the bed and cleans her up...) Ok I will be watching movies with the kids. (he was about to go but Geet holds his hand. Maan smiles nautingley at Geet and was about to lean down when Geet stops him)
Geet: You can't watch movies with them. You have to clean Asha first and put her to sleep right now since it is almost her bed time and then clear the dishes in the kitchen and prepare lunch for them tomorrow so that you don't have to do everything in the morning. (His smile vanishes listening to the things he has to do..) I suggest do everything right now before the movie finishes or else it would be very hard to do it later.
Maan: I am in charge now so I will do it in MSK style. Don't worry. You just sit and relax.
Geet shakes her head and lies on the bed smiling...Maan goes down the staris...Sargam, MJ and
Armaan all were sitting in the living room watching Ratatoui movie while Asha played with all the food by herself on the dinning table. He shakes his head and picks her up.
Maan: Ok lets get you cleaned off first...you should be easy...(she laughs and smears all of her jelly that was on her hand on Maan's face...Maan holds her his arms far away from his body so that her hands don't touch his face. He runs up stairs and takes her to her room. He puts his one foot on top of the bath tub counter and places Asha on his leg while he turns the faucet on. When the water was filled the tub...he puts Asha in there. She starts hitting the water and playing with her duck toy..he cleans her hands and her face and lets her play there by herself for a little while..."ok now I should clean the kitchen" He goes and stands in the kichen looking at the mess..."On second thought I should put the kids to sleep..." He goes outside and turns off the tv.the kids look at him.
Armaan: We were watching that dad.
Maan: too bad time for bed. Come on lets go...
All three look at each other: Catch us if you can...(All ran all over the house...Maan became really angry and started running trying to catch at least one kid. Meanwhile, Geet listened to all the noises and smiled to herself..."I told him good luck. If he was home instead of being a work-a-holic then he would really know how devilish they really are especailly Sargam." She laughs..."Only I know how I managed to control them. Chal Geet enjoy karle before you get better. She turns on the tv and makes herself confortable.." Then she heard Asha crying. "Did Maan leave her alone?"
Maan was about to catch MJ when he heard Asha crying. He quickly runs upstairs and takes out Asha from the bathroom. She started crying more. He dries her up and puts some clothes on her. He tried calming her down but she kept on trying. He takes her down stairs and into the kitchen. He puts some milk on the gas while holding her at the same time. He puts her on the counter while he poured her milk in her bottle and puts it in her mouth. He carries her back outside, while Asha puts her head on his shoulder and holds the milk bottle. He sits on the chair taking a break. "This is harder then I thought. At least you are easy to manage." he looks at Asha who kept her eyes closed while drinking her milk bottle. He lies her down on the sofa but as soon as Maan lets go of her she starts crying. He holds her again but she stops crying.
Maan: If you kids want ice cream tomorrow after school then come out right now. I will count to three and whoever is not out by then will not get any ice cream. One, two,...thr (All the kids come out and stands in front of him..he smiles...) Good. Now go up stairs, take a bath and be ready to sleep in half hour.
Sargam: But mama usually gives us bath herself.
Maan: I am not your mama. You guys need some tough love. (kids gave each other weird look) Stop looking at each other and go.
Sargam: No am not going. I want mama. (She turns her face away from him. Maan stands up and picks her up with one arm while he holds Asha with the other arm.)
Maan: You two...quietly follow me or else one of you will sleep with Sargam...(Both look at each other and quickly runs upstairs past Maan...he puts Sargam down who started crying and due to the noises making Asha cry as well. Maan takes deep breaths calming his nerves. He didn't know who to calm first, if he puts Asha down then she starts crying. He picks Sargam up and puts her on his lap...) Sargam come on stop crying. Tell me what do you want?
Sargam (stops crying...): I want mama
Maan: Besides mama. Come on you are my favorite daughter right.
Sargam: No am not. You always like MJ and Armaan better then me. I always get yelled at by you.
Maan: That doesn't mean anything. So what if I yell at you. I also yell at the boys. You will be my favorite and I thought we could bother your mom when she gets better. We would be like a team.
Sargam: really?
Maan: Of course. From now on if I yell at you in front of anyone then it will be like a drama just to show other kids that am really mad at you.
Sargam: why?
Maan: It will be our little secret. If they find out that you are my favorite then MJ and Armaan will want me to tell them the same thing too.
Sargam: Ohh yeah...(Maan sighs in relief..and after hour he finally puts Sargam in the bed. He then goes to MJ and Armaans room who were already in bed. Maan goes near them and kisses them good night. He puts Asha on her bed after she goes to sleep.)
He goes downstairs and collapses on the sofa..."I don't want anymore kids. If four are like this imagine one more. I should've listened to kid when she said she wants three kids. She makes it look so easy. He lies down on the sofa and close his eyes. He wakes up in a jerk when he rememebers the mess in the kitchen. He lazily gets up and forces himself to walk toward the kitchen.
"hmm I don't think there is any harm in asking for help. I will give kids some money tomorrow for lunch tomorrow. I am too tired to do anything for now..." (He calls up Nakul and tells him to clean the kitchen along with all the other staff QUIETLY...he goes upstairs after all the cleaning was done and goes straight to bed. The minute he hits the bed he goes to sleep...Geet smiles in her sleep...)
