Epilogue - Red Thread

"Remember, stick to what I wrote in the speech."

Maan nodded, closing his eyes & memorising the words from the speech as Geet did up his top button & fixed his tie.

"Perfect," she smiled, stepping back & adjusting her baby blue sari, running her fingers through her hair carefully which had been brushed to one side. She looked up & analysed Maan's expression; he looked a bit hesitant.

"Are you nervous?" she asked.

Maan opened his eyes. "What? No, I was just... I was remembering what you wrote."

Geet sighed, shaking her head. "I can read you like a book, Maan Singh Khurana." She pulled out a bar of chocolate from her bag. "Here, have a piece."

"You carry chocolate around with you?"

"Who doesn't?"

"Me."

"You're a different story altogether."

Maan's personal assitant & close business confidante, Aditya Chopra appeared from behind the curtain, adjusting his glasses.

"Good morning sir, Miss Geet," he greeted.

"Morning," Geet replied with a smile.

"Sir, you're on in about a minute."

"Thank you," said Maan, & Aditya left.

Geet touched Maan's arm lovingly. "Good luck." She walked away to the seating area. She sat beside Dadima, who was accompanied by Vicky to her left.

"How is he?" Dadima asked Geet.

"A little nervous, but it's expected. This is so close to his heart, he wants to get it right."

"Bro's a perfectionist, he'll nail it," said Vicky. "Don't worry."

Applause & cheers erupted as the curtains drew & Maan stepped out, taking his place before the podium. He gave an acknowledging smile to the audience who was full of businessmen & several parents.

Maan glanced down at his paper, feeling a little anxious. Then he looked up & his eyes met Geet's, who gave him a beautiful smile, & suddenly he gained his courage & began.

"I'd like to thank each & every one of you for attending today. This is something very close to my heart. I am delighted to be able to present someone today with this prosperous opportunity."

He glanced down at his paper once more, then at the picture of Dev beside his speech & continued.

"I feel it is vital that every child is given the best start in life to an education. Everyone deserves a chance to be able to develop their own knowledge.
Happiness comes in many different forms. For some, it is the praise they receive upon completing a gruelling task. For others, it is the love of those closest to your heart."

Maan looked up at Geet & smiled.

"But often, you will find that a child's happiness can stem from the smallest things. For instance, when he returns home from school & has been praised for his hard efforts. When he comes first in the school sports day. When he passes his exams.
No child should ever be denied any of this opportunities. Therefore, not only will the Dev Singh Khurana scholarship fund towards a young child's entire education, but the Dev Singh Khurana foundation, which me & my fiancee have set up will aim to help the poverty stricken children around the world benefit from the beauty that is knowledge."

The audience erupted into applause. Geet & Dadima shared a smile, when Geet felt someone tap her shoulder. She turned around, & broke out into a smile.

"You made it!"

Geet stood up & hugged Rajji tightly, followed by greeting Uncle, Tayyi-ji & Tito.

"I hope we're not late," Uncle whispered.

"You've not missed too much, it's ok," Geet reassured them.

Tayyi-ji greeted Dadima as the rest of them took their seats a row behind the Khuranas.

"Hey T-Man," Vicky turned around to give Tito a high five.

Maan smiled briefly at the Handas entrance, then cleared his throat. "So, without further ado, the recepient of the Dev Singh Khurana scholarship, to fund for his entire education is Ranvir Malhotra."

A nervous looking young boy, who was being pushed forward by his proud parents stepped out from the audience, dressed in a simple top & jeans.

Maan's breath stopped for a second.

He was the spitting image of Dev. With the dark brown hair, small dimple on his left cheek & glasses, young Ranbir looked like a 5 year old Dev.

Ranbir looked up & smiled at Maan, his big brown eyes full of hope & happiness. Maan couldn't help but smile back as he shook his hand, then knelt down so he was at eye level with him.

"Thank you sir, for the scholarship," Ranbir said.

"You're very welcome."

"Why did you choose me?"

"I felt you were more deserving."

"But other children out there need help too. When I grow up, I'm going to be a doctor & I'll cure all the children who are ill."

Maan laughed at his innocence. "My younger brother used to say that too."

"Where is he, is he in the audience?" Ranbir turned back.

Maan looked over the heads & saw Vicky fooling around with Tito, both of them laughing. He smiled. "One of them. My other brother, who wanted to be a doctor, well, he looks over us now."

"Like a guardian angel?" Ranbir cocked his head to the side.

"Yes, exactly." Maan stood up & returned to the speaker. "Congratulations Mr & Mrs Malhotra."

The audience applauded once more. Geet felt Dadima stiffen beside her. Vicky, who had just glanced at the stage was also in shock too.

"Dadima?" Geet asked.

A small smile played across Dadima's lips. "That little boy looks just like Dev."

"Really?" Geet asked. She put a hand over Dadima's.

"Dadi, are you ok?" Vicky asked, placing a hand on her shoulder.

Dadima beamed at Ranbir. "Yes, I'm just fine."

"I am certain your son will make you proud," Maan said, handing a golden envelope to Ranbir, who ran off stage with it, leaping excitedly to his parents who looked overjoyed as they hugged their son.

"I'd like to thank all of you once again for attending. Please, do enjoy the refreshments about to be served after this. Good night."

The audience applauded for the last time as Maan disappeared behind the curtains. The Khuranas & Handas hurried back stage. Dadima reached Maan first, giving him an affectionate pat on the head.

"Well done dear," she said.

"You did us proud, bro," Vicky added, sharing a half hug with his brother.

Geet appeared, linking her arm with Maan's. "I knew you could do it. I'm so proud of you."

The Handas came forward to congratulate Maan.

"It's a very charitable thing you did, Maan," Uncle stated. "I'm glad you helped him come closer to achieving his dream."

Tayyi-ji nudged Uncle anxiously, & Geet noticed the movement.

"Is there something wrong?" she asked.

Uncle cleared his throat. "We're all in a good mood, I didn't want to burst anyone's bubble but I thought you should know. Darjee & Brij have been sentenced to lengthy terms in prison."

Geet sighed with relief. She felt like a heavy burden of 13 years had been lifted off her shoulder.

"Thank god for that," Maan said, caressing Geet's hand soothingly.

"Those animals deserved to rot in hell," Dadima said through gritted teeth. Vicky nodded in agreement.

"I have something to say," Rajji said excitedly.

Everyone turned to look at her.

"Well, what is it?" Geet asked.

"I've been accepted into one of the top colleges in Mumbai! They have one of the best courses around for becoming a professional schoolteacher, & their pass rate is second to none."

Geet released herself from Maan to hug her sister. "I am so proud of you, I knew you'd go far!"

"Why didn't you tell us before?" Tayyi-ji asked.

"I'm sorry Ma, but I wanted to tell Geet di when we were all together."

Tayyi-ji smiled. "I can't be angry at you, my daughter is going places!"

Everyone stepped forward to congratulate Rajji.

"I think this calls for gol gappes," said Uncle. "What do you say?"

"I can never say no to gol gappes," Vicky said. "But only if Geet makes them, she's an excellent cook."

"I know," Maan said, smiling at his fiancee.

"You do?" Geet asked incredously. "But... how?"

"The first day I came to your house, you cooked for everyone. I had never tasted food like yours before."

Geet blushed, & Dadima nudged her affectionately. "Gol gappes it is then, made from our Geet's hands. We'll meet you by the car."

Everyone left for the car park, leaving Maan & Geet alone.

"I just realised, how about the refreshments after party?" Geet asked.

"No refreshments come close to your food," he replied.

"It finally feels like we can put everything behind, what with Darjee & Brij being sent down."

"It's been a long time coming. Now we can forget the past & look forward to our married life together."

"We have 3 months until our wedding," Geet stated.

"I'm aware of that. But-" Maan stepped closer. "That doesn't mean we can't practice now."

In a sudden move, he picked a shocked Geet up in his arms, who clung onto his neck tightly.

"Maan!"

"What?" he laughed. "It's not like you've not been in this position before."

"I know, but no one was around then. What if someone sees?"

"That's the whole idea. Come on, let's go."

Geet was about to protest, but one dazzling smile from Maan shut her up. He chuckled as he carried her out.

"I'm quite enjoying this," Geet said.

"Me too."

"We should do this more often."

Maan chuckled. "Definetly," he replied, before kissing Geet on the forehead as they left the venue together.

Ahhh me so sorry for not commenting on the last few updates
