Money is a source of comfort, but not a quotient of happiness.

As told to Lata Khubchandani
page 1 of 1

My first official job was as a catering trainee at a hotel in 1986. And my first paycheque was for Rs 600. I gave it to my mother.

I've been through some lean financial patches. When I came to Mumbai I had very little in my pocket and often had to choose between a vada pav and my bus fare. Today I have enough, but am scared of losing it.

Still, money can never be a quotient of happiness. If it gives you a better lifestyle, it also brings fair weather friends who'll give you a false feeling of importance.

I don't use money to project my status. I spend most of it on my family instead. Money doesn't mean anything if you don't put it to good use–like buying a nice house or a educating your children.

My only indulgence is cars and I have splurged on them even when I couldn't afford to.

I am into charity and believe that if I have more money than I need, I must give it to people who need it more.;
