TRPS Are Not In Our Hands!:Note PG5

It's obvious from the latest Star One official disclaimer that the show isn't ending, that Geet is a hugely popular show.

Unfortunately, in India, a highly popular show need NOT have High TPS!

Sounds strange and unbelievable, doesn't it?!

It's clear that Star One now knows how very loved and popular Geet is. And while that gives them great joy it still can give them some sorrow as its TRPS are still dismal...and for all channels and PHs, only TRPS matter as that's there sole source of income.

Now, I have seen several topics on how to increase TRPS of the show on this forum.

Though some enlightened people have written in detail about the realities of the Trp system and how it works in India, everyone here still seems to think that by simply switching on the tv at 9.25 pm will do the trick.

Let me tell you otherwise. The Trps won't rise even if you and I and the most of India turn on our TV sets at the stipulated time!

Why?

Let me put it in simple terms:

There's something called the TAM peoplemeter, an electronic device that is attached to the TV sets in a few households in india that register the progarmmes that are watched by the members of these households. These people are asked to press a button on the device the moment they tune into their favourite channel.

Immediately, the device sends the message to the TAM centre/s and it is here that the TRps are gathered.

Now, this only reflects the viewing habits and preferences of a small cross-section of people in India as it is impossible for the Govt to provides these devices for every household in the country.

Nevertheless, this is the best method adopted so far and while it may not project the preferences of most people, it at least gives an idea of what may be most watched among those who have been given the device.

So, according to the TRps so far, shows like Pavithra Rista and Balika Vadhu find more takers than Geet because these households identify themselves more with characters and backgrounds...As most of the TAM gadgets are given to towns and villages rather than metro cities.

Most of us in the metros, especially the big metros, do not have these gadgets...and I don't know anybody who has one..it's not a secret or anything that people don't talk about it.

So, when so many topics appeared on the forum advising us to turn on the tV at the right time in order to increase the trps, I thought I'd make a topic on it so all you would know that it is not in our hands, literally to do so. And if there is anybody here who does have the TAM gadget in their house, they will do the needful if they are Geet fans.

I repeat: The trps CANNOT be increased by turning on the TV at 9.25 pm WITHOUT the TAM device.

Sorry for the long lecture!😆

Yea that is true and I am aware of it. But still, when the other show can do well on the same channel, we should encourage ppl to watch GEET on TV, whether it helps or not. 😃

Great post! Thanks for the info. It is so important to be informed of these things. After I read this I googled TRPs and got this article, which I thought was relatively easy to understand for tech-challenged individuals such as myself.

http://www.televisionpoint.com/lounge/lounge.php?id=1175340695

Here is an excerpt which I thought was most relevant:

"How reliable are TRP ratings?
As with any sampling, TRP ratings could be inaccurate due to sampling errors like inadequate coverage of the TV owning population. In India, for example, TAM ratings are based on people meters installed in only 16 top cities in nine states. Also, the panel households exclude lower middle and top income bracket households, which are keen watchers of niche English channels. Then the whole system is based on the list of metered households being confidential so that their viewing habit is not unduly influenced."

So I guess we are doing all we can do for the show. We are keeping the forum active with discussion, harassing the StarOne executives if ever there is a suggestion that the show is ending and just loving the show and expressing that on every platform! But if you do know anybody who has the TAM thing, please do "unduly influence their viewing habits"!

Why are you confused?

Ok..Do you have this electronic device that the Information and Broadcasting Ministry of India has authorised? It's called TAM, a gadget that is attached to your TV set. You press a button on it or attached to it when you tune into your favourite channel...in this case, Geet in Star one.

Once you press that button, it is registered at the TAM center. If the Geet's TRPS are to rise, many viewers like you who have the device in their homes will have to press that button around the same time...

That device is not given to everybody in india because, there aren't enough of then going around and there are too many homes. Only a selected few are given these devices and i'm not sure on what basis they are selected...whether it is to do with towns and villages and a class of people in the metros or if it is to do with housewives as constant viewers!

All I know is that a majority of metro viewers are not given this device.

So, unless you have this gadget installed at your home...btw, you can't buy it over the counter...it's given to you by the TAM people, you cannot raise the trps by simply tuning into Star One at 9.25 pm.

So, Geet may be very popular and 1000s of others like us must be watching it in India but it's pretty pointless as that doesn't contribute to the TRPS.

Star One knows that Geet is popular, thanks to all those fans who called and wrote on the FB pages...but if none of these fans have that gadget and cannot that translates into trps, it's quite useless to the channel which depend majorly on sponsorship to keep their channel going as sponsors prefer to advertise on shows that have good and high trps.

Yet, it's comforting to know that Geet has many sponsors!

Hope things are a little clearer now?
