"I wrote the story for Mr Bachchan. The film would have never gotten made if he hadn't agreed. Once I was done, I asked Ramu sir (director Ram Gopal Varma) to get us connected. We met and though he liked the idea, he was hesitant because he thought the film was a masala entertainer," Puri informs. It took a little more convincing from Puri and Big B was on board.
"I never imagined directing him. In fact, I failed my exams during college because I was busy watching his films," the film-maker recollects, adding, "Mr Bachchan is like a volcano of energy." Bbuddah... has an ex gangster, Viju, a pub owner settled in Paris, return to Mumbai on a mission after 20 years. Of course, that explains the whacky look that Amitabh flaunts.
"Leepakshi Ellawadi (designer), myself and Mr Bachchan conceived the look but of course, the idea of wearing two watches was his. In fact, he took me to his wardrobe and showed me the innumerable colourful glasses that he owns. I was amazed at his collection, considering he hardly wears them," Puri says.
While the angry, young man image of Amitabh is something that is hard to erase from the audience's memories, Puri is no different and confesses missing his hero in that avatar.
"I realised that Mr Bachchan is aging, but think of him and the word Bbhudaah has no meaning. Also, I penned a dialogue 'Agar mein marunga toh goli se marunga, BP ya sugar se nahi'. That said it all." Puri is thrilled with the way things have shaped up in his career. "But I continue to remain a writer first. There's no denying that one good story can easily generate crores — that's the power of the pen. I enjoyed every moment of directing this film — Bollywood, here I come," he signs off.
