I wasn't going to update this until Thursday or Friday, after I'd updated GB, but the 100+ likes & 7 pages of comments I received in just 24 hours after updating were so amazing that I had to find a way of saying thank you

A lovely reader, tanya_vi said she was crying at my last update - I don't know if I should take that as a compliment or apologise for making you cry! So I shall do both 😆 - thank you very much Tanya, & I'm sorry I made you cry 😊

Chapter 12 - Unwanted Guests

Geet made it to the Handa haveli gates, panting heavily from running so fast. She had a stitch in her stomach & she could hardly breathe but she had to get inside her bedroom before anyone saw her.

She snuck across the garden, & began to climb up the wall in the same procedure that she had seen Maan adapt.

It was a make-or-break moment when her left foot slipped slightly.

She had to bite her tongue to prevent herself from squealing and curled her toes in an attempt to keep her shoe on her foot.

With many struggles, she managed to haul herself inside. She looked around her room for any sign that anyone had noticed she had gone, but it looked like she'd gotten away with it.

Geet collapsed against the wall, wondering how Maan had climbed up the wall the 2 times he had & managed to remain his hold as well.

Her mind wandered back to his revelation of his past. She felt the tears form in her eyes as she wondered how he had kept the guilt, the pain bottled inside him for so long.

And she thought she had it bad.

Geet closed her eyes, leant her head back against the wall and made a prayer to Babaji.

"Babaji, just like you're taking care of my parents in heaven, take care of Maan's brother Dev too. Erase the guilt that Maan holds inside him & give him happiness. Guide him & protect him, Babaji, and shield him away from any pain."

She opened her eyes & looked at the clock which hung on her wall - it read 1.30am.

Realising she would have to be awake in 5 hours for Brij's breakfast meal, she made it to her bed & fell straight asleep, truly worn out from the night's events.

Rajji came bursting into Geet's room the next morning, feeling much better from her fever but now overcome with panic for her sister.

"Geet di, wake up, you're late!" she said, shaking Geet's shoulder.

Geet mumbled.

"Di, please, Brij Veerji is going to lose his temper any minute! I'm surprised he's held out this long!"

Geet's eyes flew open & she sat up quickly. Her eyes immediately travelled to the clock which read 8am.

"Babaji, oh no, what have I done?!" Geet wailed, jumping off the bed.

"You overslept! Maa had to give Brij Veerji his breakfast - he is so angry, & Darjee isn't happy about it either. Maa is uttering profanities at you-"

Geet ran a hand over her hair, fixed her dupatta & rushed downstairs, Rajji following behind. She was half walking, half running to the kitchen when an arm adorned with golden bangles stopped her.

Tayyi-ji looked furious.

"Here she is, the princess of the household, who thinks she can get out of doing her chores. My son waited for half an hour for his breakfast, half an hour! Tell me, Geet, why should he have to starve because of your complete & utter laziness?"

"T-Tayyi-ji, I'm so sorry, I-"

Geet felt a hard slap across her cheek.

"Maa!" Rajji called out, horrified at the action but Rajji raised a finger to her daughter, indicating for her to keep out of the situation.

Tears brimmed in Geet's eyes at the sheer pain of the blow, she looked at Tayy-ji, feeling petrified.

Tayyi-ji's eyes were widened with anger & she looked at Geet in disgust. She pushed past Geet, nudging her harshly on the shoulder & storming off upstairs. Rajji rushed to Geet's side, consoling her by putting an arm around her.

Geet felt weak as she cried into her hands, her cheek still burning.

"Di, please don't cry," said Rajji. "Come on, we'll find some ointment to put on it."

They walked into the kitchen to find Uncle-ji rifling through the cupboards. He looked at a sobbing Geet & a concerned Rajji, & rushed over to their side.

"Geet, what happened dear?" he asked, placing a hand on her shoulder.

"Maa slapped her," Rajji said quietly. "Because she woke up late & Veerji didn't get his food on time."

Uncle-ji shook his head at his wife's cruel actions. "I wish I could do something to help you, Geet. I feel like I'm failing you as an uncle."

Geet couldn't reply due to her compulsive sobbing.

"Rajji, make sure her cheek heals and the mark fades. The... the family for Geet's rishta is coming today," he said sadly, then left the kitchen.

She felt herself go rigid. She had forgotten that a family was coming to visit her. The sickening feeling in her stomach returned.

Rajji went & brought in 2 chairs from a spare room. She pulled them up, pushing Geet down on one of them.

When she found the ointment, she gently applied it to Geet's cheek, who winced.

"Sorry, di," she said. Rajji studied Geet's face - her eyes were droopy, faint black circles were visible...

"Did you sleep late last night?" she asked.

Geet looked up, surprised.

"You look really tired," Rajji added.

Geet wondered if she should tell Rajji about her sneaking out or not... Rajji was always there for her, always went against her mother & brother to be there for her. She only truly trusted her younger sister.

"I... I snuck out of the house last night," Geet said quietly, looking down at her hands.

Rajji stopped applying the ointment & looked at Geet with an incredulous expression.

"How... How did you... and why..."

"Maan said he needed to meet me regarding the registry papers. There was no other way we could talk unless we met up. I couldn't go during the day, you know that. So I climbed out of the window & met him."

"What did he say about the papers?"

Geet realised they hadn't talked about that at all. They had ended up talking about Maan's past. Staying true to his promise, she decided this was the one thing she couldn't tell Rajji.

"It's complicated," she lied.

"Did anyone notice?"

Geet shook her head. "I feel awful that I did it, but there was no other way..."

"Di, I understand. You have to do what you have to do. I don't judge you for it at all - in fact, I'm glad you did. Maan is teaching you how to be courageous."

The dreaded moment had arrived.

At 12pm, the Handas were in the living area, waiting for the family to arrive.

Geet had changed into a baby blue salwaar kameez. On Tayyi-ji's orders, she was forced to wear small earrings and a few bangles - jewellry which she usually wasn't even allowed to touch.

Her mark from the harsh slap had healed - but the slight tinge of pain was still there.

Her eyes had been lined with a light touch of eyeliner, making them stand out even more.

She looked beautiful, but her heart was dying inside.

There was a tense atmosphere in the air, & Geet was praying silently that the family would decide not to turn up after all.

The knocks on the door proved her wrong.

An eager Brij rushed to open it & greeted the guests inside - a small, plump woman was led inside, where she met everyone with a smile.

Followed by two young men.

Geet's gaze was fixated on the floor when they entered, but then something inside her somehow compelled her to look up.

Her eyes almost popped out when she saw one of the men looking at her with a confused & shocked expression on his face.

The man who she had bumped into on her way to meet Maan.

She looked away quickly, but her throat became dry, her knees went weak, she was finding it impossible to sit still.

She had to get out of the room, she had to find some way of leaving before he told everyone he had seen her on the streets in the middle of the night.

Geet didn't dare to look up again, her mind running through a thousand different thoughts.

She suddenly stood up & caught everyone's attention.

"Geet, what is it?" Brij asked, feigning a sweet voice towards her but glaring at her deathly.

"I-I... Excuse me, I just need to use the bathroom," she said in a rush & managed to escape up the stairs.

She could almost feel everyone's confused faces bore into her as she left, but right now, all she could think about was her actions from last night being exposed.

A chill ran through her as she imagined what Darjee would do to her if he ever found out.

Geet rushed into her room in a hurry, closing the door behind her & leaning her head against it, facing the door.

Her breaths became regular as she told herself to calm down & attempted to think rationally.

"They're here, aren't they?" came a voice from behind her.

i hv been a silent reader of this ff... i really love how u portray geet's n maan's pain beautifully! 👏

the last update where maan told about his bro was really heart wrenching... n when he said he doesnt sleep my eyes pained to even think how he endures such pain

coming to this update... i was sitting on the edge when geet saw someone she bumped into last nite... i cannot see her in more pain... ugh i hate tayyiji n darji n that brij 😡 mean characterless hard hearted... i cannot stop describing their cruel nature... 😡

anyways i really hope that new guy doesnt tell darji 😕 let maan save the dayyy peeeshhh

wow.. that was good! I hope that guy doesn't spill the beans on her... ooohyeah..Maans there!! damn , I love how smitten hes with her! This is getting soo damn interesting.. please post the next part sooner than thursday/friday... so so wanna read what happens next.
