"Don't you want to be famous and glamourous like your sister?" neighbours and friends asked Arunima when model sister Dipannita's face was plastered across newspapers and magazines.
"But I never let it get to me. That's the only way to survive," she says with a cock sure smile. Here, she tells Your Life how she kept her identity intact while growing up with a celeb sis.
Growing up
Dipannita and Arunima made sure they developed separate identities. "And our parents were very supportive of our choices. They encouraged us in our own way, and that helped me deal with my sister's fame."
While she pursued a graduation in Microbiology and Food Science, Dipannita went in for History. "It's important to do you on thing."
When stardom struck
Even after Dipannita became famous, she was still "Baido" (older sister in Assamese) to her Arunima. "I remember first seeing a picture of her in Femina. I was really happy for her. Sometimes, when nasty feelings creep up, I think of those happy times," she confesses.
Each to her own
While many say Arunima's recent foray into acting (her role as Rano in Kasamh Se n Zee TV) was a result of following older sister Dipannita's footsteps, Arunima tells us otherwise. "For both Dipannita and me, our actor mother Krishna Sharma has been a mentor.
So, my acting genes tore me away from Microbiology and Food Science and catapulted me into the world of television," smiles the petite actor, who entered the television industry just a year back. Arunima hopes to carve her own niche in the industry. "I never force myself into anyone else's shoes."
Why stick together
"A sibling is the best link to your past," crooned Baz Luhrman in his song, Sunscreen. And Arunima couldn't agree more. "When friends and boyfriends aren't around, your sibling is always there for you. So, anyone who has a sibling should consider themselves lucky, and stick together."
Comparisons continue
Now that Arunima has entered the glam industry, the comparison have only increased. "It's inevitable. People and the media are not going to leave me alone." But she chooses to use her sister's experience, and take tips on make-up and clothes. "When people ask me why I don't join Dips on the ramp, I simply say, 'If I want to, I will!'"
