Chapter 59

"Sir, a 911 call was just placed by a woman claiming to be Geet Handa. She says she was kidnapped by a woman wearing a burqa and his being held captive at an unknown location."
The superintendent had joined the group of officers working the case at the mayor's request. Given Maan's status and influence in the community, the mayor wanted him to feel that the city was giving it's best efforts to recover his fiance. The superintendent ordered them to immediately get an audio feed on that call. He wanted to confirm that it was really Geet, to make sure they weren't being sent on a wild goose chase.
As soon as Maan heard the husky, feminine voice, saying, "She had some kind of hand gun and threatened to kill me if I didn't do as she wanted," he cried out in agony at hearing her beloved voice.
The superintendent lost no time in directing a trace to be put on the call. The officers were on it quickly, trying to narrow down the location as fast as possible. Every moment, felt like an eternity to Maan, who couldn't bare to hear Geet tell the dispatcher details of her imprisonment.
"Sir, we've got a location. Auburn Gresham, S. Ashland Ave., between W 75th Place and W 76th Street."
"Um...I think I hear her coming back. I can't stay on the line. I don't know what she will do if she finds me on the phone." Maan felt a sinking feeling in his gut at those words. So far Geet was still alive, but at any moment this unknown person could take her life.
It seemed like the superintendent had the same concern, as he told the assistant, "I want all officers on this call to turn off their sirens when they near the location. We don't want to tip of the suspect and endanger Ms. Handa's life."

Geet barely had time to end the call and get her phone back in her pocket, before the door opened again. She tried to appear the same as before, but her heart was pounding so loudly, she was sure her captor would hear it. She tried to think if there was anything she could do that would help, while she waited for rescue.
"Well, the famous MSK is certainly very interested in getting you back," taunted the woman, as she came near and looked at Geet closely. "He announced a huge reward for information on your whereabouts, not just on the six o'clock news, but also, just now on the ten o'clock news."
"Is that was this is?" asked Geet, hoping that she could keep this woman talking. "Did you kidnap me for ransom?"
"Ramsom? Really, did you think we would be foolish enough to do that?"
"We?"
"What do you think? Should I tell her about our plans?"
"I don't see why not. It's not like she'll be able to reveal anything. Plus, she is our darling's friend, so I think that entitles her to an explanation."
Geet's eyes began to get round and she seemed to hear the woman talk to herself. She began to wonder if this woman was even sane? Her heart started beating faster, and she unconsciously began straining against the tape again.
"I guess since this is likely the only time I will be able to share our carefully laid plans with someone, I will explain. But I want to point out that the situation that you are in right now, is entirely your own fault. I never would have felt the need to do anything about you, if you hadn't interfered with my plans. But, since you did, I actually think that everything will work out more to my advantage. I'm sure that your loss will affect Maan in a away that even the deaths of his other family members never would or could."
"What?"
"Now, don't get ahead of yourself, or you will confuse our little audience member. She doesn't know anything about your previous masterpiece, or how she accidently interrupted your plans for little JD."
As soon as Geet heard JD's name, she saw red. "You witch! You keep away from my JD!"
"Now, now, now. Is that any way to behave with a member of the family?"
"Oops! Now you've done it again. She doesn't know about our connection, either."
"You're right. Should I tell her, or show her?"
"Oh, I think showing would be much more dramatic."
Once the conversation with herself was over, the woman reached up and began to take of the veil covering her face. Next to go was the head scarf, and finally the outer garment. Geet could see that under all this she was wearing a kurti and pants. She also tried to make out the features of the woman's face, but it was a bit difficult in the dim light.
"Still don't recognize me, do you? Well, it was a definite advantage to me that neither you nor JD has ever seen me before. It made it very easy to get close to you, without either of you noticing my presence."
"What do you have against a little boy like JD? Why can't you leave him alone?"
"Listen, that brat has caused me more trouble, than anyone deserves. And how much would you care for him if you knew that it was all his fault that you're in this situation right now. If the little monster had died with his parents like he was supposed to, you never would have become his nanny, or become engaged to the famous Maan Singh Khurana."
"Oh, look at her face. She's beginning to put the pieces together."
"Were you responsible for Vicky and Meera's accident?"
"Oh, well done. I did wonder if I would have to give you more of a hint, but you figured out very well on your own. Too bad this isn't a game show. You could win a prize for you guess. Yes, Vicky and Meera's accident wasn't quite so accidental. The only problem was, the guy I hired to run their car off the road, assured me that all three were inside the car. Imagine my surprise, when I find out later that the little Khurana wasn't in the car at all. In fact, he was living it up happily with his Uncle and soon to be Aunt in Chicago. Well, that was a pick of a shock."
"You're crazy! Vicky and Meera were two of the best people on this earth. They never did anything to harm anyone."
"Never harmed anyone? What about the harm they did my little girl? They took what was rightfully hers. They took away what should have been given to her. It was the only reason that we agreed to the marriage, instead of getting it annulled like I urged Nayan to do."
When she heard the name Nayan come from the woman's mouth, she couldn't believe it. The explanation that had now popped into her head about why this crazy woman's voice sounded familiar, well it just couldn't be right. Yet, she had an awful feeling that it was.
"You're Naintara's mother? You? You're supposed to be visiting family."
"Oh, give the girl another prize. But, I don't think my darling girl would be pleased to hear the way you've been speaking to me. I'm sure she would want you to call me Aunty. No? Oh, well. I've tired of this conversation. It' really pointless, anyway. I will succeed in getting my daughter what she deserves, and everything has been planned correctly this time to ensure there are no slip ups."
Geet cringed at the tone of voice used to say those words, and hoped against hope that the police would arrive soon. She had a horrible fear that this woman meant to kill her, and didn't know how much longer it would be before she tried. Just as these thoughts were running around Geet's head, both women heard a thud.
"What was that?"
"Something falling down?"
"No, there shouldn't be anything like that."
"What if someone is here?"
"Why would anyone come here. We purposely chose this location because it was abandoned."
"You never know, some filthy homeless person might have broken in."
"Well, if they did, we know how to take care of them, don't we?"
