I am good at playing a tomboy: Priya Wal

MM.com exclusively chats with Priya Wal, who shot to fame for essaying the role of the 'red- haired' tomboy from the popular show Remix. In this freewheeling interview, she justifies playing a tomboy again in her latest show Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani, how her off-screen persona is totally different, and also her plans of starting a single girls' ashram

We've seen the TV actress Priya Wal in several soaps like C.I.D., Yes Boss, Sun Yaar Chill Maar, Aek Chabhi Hai Paddos Mein, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii and many more, but she agrees she's got everyone sitting up and taking notice of her for essaying the role of Anvesha in her first show- Remix. She's extremely excited to be a part of Ekta Kapoor's Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani on Star One as her fans wanted to see her again in the tomboy avatar!

You played a role of a tomboy in the show Remix, which is similar to your current character - Misha - in the show Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani. Weren't you scared of being typecast?
No, not at all. It's very easy to typecast somebody, but the challenge is to take it up and do something different with it. There's a lot more to every character than just playing a tomboy. Luckily, I don't have to sport red hair this time!

You agree that your tomboy image goes very well with the audiences?
I was very lucky to be launched with the show Remix. I feel my tomboyish image got stuck in people's mind. People really wanted to see me in a similar role and I am good at playing a tomboy.

How close is the real Priya to the character of Misha?
When you play a character, you put parts of you in it. But I am a very different person off-screen. I am not so boisterous and not so tomboyish, in fact my friends bully me and I am like a damsel in distress. When you do a TV show, you become the character as you end up spending 14-15 hours on the sets.

Were you sceptical about signing a show based on Vampires?
I knew Twilight had become a big rage in our country and I was sure the kids would like a similar concept. Kids love Misha, now.

Which is your favourite vampire film?
Kate Beckinsale's Underworld!

You made a short film as well?
Yes, it's a 5-minute short film keeping myself and my friends in mind. It's a take on how girls dream of falling in love with a Prince Charming but end up falling in love with a goofy guy next door.

So you mean girls intend to fall in love with bad boys?
Yes, no one likes doormats and dish washing kind of guys. You want someone who stands up for himself.

If not an actor, you'd be…
I'd be a writer as I am fond of writing poems. I also played national level tennis. Else, I'd rather be a part of some travel show, even if I just have to be a spot boy.

So, which is your favourite holiday spot?
Mauritius and New York.

Are you dating anyone?
Nope, I am single. So, all the good guys can get in touch with me provided they send in their pictures and bank statement. (Laughs) Just kidding.

Are you interested in joining Bollywood?
I don't want to do typical Bollywood films. I would love to have a career like Konkana Sen Sharma. I would love it if I was half as talented as her.

Any future plans?

I want to start a single girls' ashram in Haridwar.

Nice interview. Thanks for sharing. :)

I really wish Priya would do different kinds of roles after this. You know, explore different aspects of her personality and her creativity. I hope PKYEK wraps up soon, so we see her doing something refreshing and new. I think she has a lot of potential as an actress, and she showed that so well in Remix with all the sides to Ashi. But her potential is totally wasted in this show. :(

I agree that it's a challenge to risk getting typecasted and try to do something different with a character that sounds similar in theory...but sadly she IS getting typecasted now. I hope she does something completely different and refreshing after this role. And challenges herself.

I liked her answer about Bollywood. :) I think that's the best way to be in Bollywood for a serious actor. Considering all the crap Bollywood churns out these days. lol Shows that she is passionate about acting. :)

And wow she seems multi-talented. Writing, tennis and acting! Impressive! :)
