I'm only translating this from an interview Jethalal (Dilip Joshi) from DivyaBhaskar Gujarati newspaper

Family
Two kids,Daughter in 12th and Son in 7th standard.
They live in Mumbai with me.
Originally we are from Gosa village (10 km away from Porbandar, Guajrat)

Childhood:
I started acting in child-plays at the age of 12. I joined Little theatre academy of Namdev Lahute. My first childplay was "Aie Ranchhod Rangila", I was supposed to act as a statute for 7-8 minutes in that drama.

Education
I was in Wilson's College (Mumbai). In the last year I joined N.M. Commerce college.
While doing B.Com, I got INT(Indian National Theatre)'s best actor award twice.
One of that drama was directed by Raju Joshi (Kyoki Saas bhi) and second one was Directed by Niraj Vora (Phir Hera Pheri).
I did piecemeal roles in various dramas but never thought of making acting as my sole profession.

Commercial Success:
1988, (the real) Tarak Mehta converted a Marathi drama into Gujarati, named "Sakha Sahiyara", I got role in it and we did 300 shows of that. After that I never looked back.

First time television break: "Hum Panchhi Ek daal ke"
Then I got the lead role in "Zaraa Hatke" for Zee Tv.
I acted as a Madrasi Rangaa-swaami in "Kya Baat hai"

Films:
N.Chandra saw me in a drama of Sujarata Mehta and gave me a small role in Pratighat.
Then I got comic roles in
  1. Hum Aap ke hai kaun
  2. Phir bhi dil hai hindustani
  3. Khiladi 420
  4. 1 2 kaa 4
  5. Dil hai Tumhara.

Although I still believe, I've never got a proper role in Movies where I could show my real acting skills.
Also acted in a Gujarati movie "Hun Hunshi Hunshilal"

Tarak Mehta ka Ultaa Chashma

When I got the offer, first I rejected it as I was busy with a serial in Sahara One but then that serial production closed down so I joined the Tarak Mehta project.

It is very interesting that the Real Tarak Mehta is responsible for two big turning points in Dilip's Joshi's life, first with the drama in 1988 (which prompted Dilip Joshi to take up acting as a profession) and second time by his serial tarak Mehta ka Oolta Chashma.
