Hi guys. I wrote this piece sometime back. It's not based on any particular couple. It's just a random thing... I did not want to post it either, but Sujata-di wanted me to, and I could never say no to her... so here it is... hope you like it di, and I hope all of you here will pardon me for the darešŸ˜³šŸ˜†

friendship...

When we first saw each other, I was 18 and he was 19. It was our first year in college, a very normal afternoon in the canteen. He did not say "hello!", instead he said, "if you don't mind, can I have your tea? 'coz you are not having it." He was a tea-holic (he still is), and I never liked tea, but had to take it as part of afternoon snacks. That was our first meet...and perhaps that was the beginning.

He was dating my room-mate that time, and that was how we knew each other. He was just a batch-mate, and not even a class-mate, but I knew almost everything about him, without ever speaking to him, thanks to my roomie.

Almost every evening we sat together for the evening tea, and would spend the whole evening without talking to each other. He would always have my tea, 'coz mine was free as well as compulsory (I was a hostelite) and the amount of tea the others paid for, was not worth it.

As days passed, and the first semester came to an end, he broke up with his girlfriend and drifted apart (it was actually the other way round). I felt bad for him, for he seemed very lonely for some days, but then even he went on with his life. And his next girlfriend was a better friend of mine. (Well, he continued with his tea-habit). Perhaps this was the time when we actually started talking to each other, after six months of silence.

The second year saw lots of ups and downs in both our lives. I shifted from the hostel to a flat nearby with three other girls, and I was not happy. He again broke up with his second semester girlfriend (this time also it was the other way round), but he found another girl for himself rather quickly this time. This year we were in the same section, so, we were mostly together in projects (thanks to our initials that started with the same letter). Even if we weren't, we would help each other out. We ended up in the same friend circle, and somehow, I always found him beside me, when there was nobody around to give me company to the ice-cream shop at 10 in the night.

We saw lots of hurdles. We fought a lot, we would never come to a common conclusion, be it assignments, or outing plans. Most of the times, the fights would lead to us not talking to each other, but everything suddenly would become all right in the afternoon. He would again go back to snatching away my Cornetto, just when the yummiest part was left, and I would not resent to drawing a smiley on his notebook when he was busy trying to concentrate on the grumpy professor (we both hated afternoon special classes, actually, my whole class did).

Time never stops for anyone; it didn't stop for us either. We graduated from college, and moved on, leaving behind four years of fun and lots of fond memories to cherish. Lots of things have changed. We are now at two different corners of India, leading our lives in our own way. But, one thing that has not changed is our friendship. We don't talk to each other for months, but when, once in a while, his name flashes on my cell, my face lightens up with a smile, no matter how sad I am at that moment. I know he is in some trouble when he calls me, but he always says, "No, I just called to say hello."

Circumstances brought us together, but nobody, not even we ourselves know, how, when and why we became friends, so close, so strong. I never tried to cool him down when he was angry, still he came to me with all his problems, because he just wanted to be heard. He never wiped my tears, perhaps he never wanted me to cry. I never led a helping hand when he fell, because I wanted him to rise on his own. We trusted each other on every word of ours, though we kept breaking our promises, because we knew that the other one would understand. Ours was a weird relationship, we defined it as Friendship.
