Smriti delays Kyunki leap?
The actress allegedly wants her co-production to go on air first
Reena Thapar Kapoor
After talk of the much publicised 20-year leap of Kyunki…, came the news of its postponement. The air was rife with speculations about the reasons behind this change in the scheme of events. Now it has been alleged that Smriti Irani wanted her co-production Garima (working title) to go on air before the leap.
The reason it seems is this: in Garima the actress will play a 25-year-old protagonist. However her 70-plus avtaar in Kyunki… could mean that she would get further typecast… as an older Tulsi. So Smriti had allegedly pressurised the channel and Ekta Kapoor to first put Garima on air before the leap in Kyunki… happens. It also seems that Irani is more excited about playing Garima than an older Tulsi and she has been making it obvious to the concerned people.
Ekta for her part says: "Smriti has never made any demands. Despite being one of the most popular actors of the industry she has not thrown her weight around. In Garima she is playing a much younger character. And for someone who is ready to play a 70-year-old without creating a fuss unlike other actors, it is only fair that she gets what she wants. I completely understand her point."
On being asked about Irani's role in the delay of the leap, Kapoor says: "I was unable to wind up the current storyline till the April 7, the original date of the leap. And so there was no other option but to postpone the leap. Even now as the new leap date (June 7) is nearing, no one but I know what I'm going through to wind up the current story. I don't see why Smriti should be blamed for the delay."
Smriti Irani was unavailable for comment.
