C ontroversies and scams are known to attract Hindi film industry for a long time. Monica, starring Ashutosh Rana, Divya Dutta, Yashpal Sharma, Tinu Anand, Kitu Gidwani, Saurabh Dubey, falls in the league. Monica as the title suggests is a story of a woman, an overambitious woman at that who gets trapped in circumstances and gets killed. The film featuring Divya in the lead role is scheduled to release shortly. " Monica is a serious film focusing on a serious issue. Through this movie, I am attempting to understand women and what happens when they flirt with power. Journalism plays a vital role in the film. Monica's life is such that it makes headlines every now and then," said Sushen Bhatnagar, the director of the film, who was in Delhi with the cast and producer Kush Bhargava, to promote the film. "As I'm a politician myself so the film has benefitted from my own understanding of politics as well," stated Bhargava on the occasion.
Critically acclaimed actor Ashutosh Rana essays the role of the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, who exploits a Lucknow girl to his advantage and then kills her. "The film is an inspiration from real life scams. Power is genderless, so, to blame a man for its misuse is not correct. Women too succumb to it and sometimes they have to pay the price."
The film shows journey of Monica from the age of 17 till her death. Divya enacting the character of Monica expressed, "I was challenged as an actress to do the role, as it had shades of real people one has read about in newspapers. The unfortunate death and killing of people like Shivani Bhatnagar, Madhumita Shukla and the likes is disturbing. As an actor it is challenging to portray their agony and what they must have experienced when things spiralled out of their control."
